PROTESTANT ALLIANCE FRIENDLY SOCIETY. WESTERN AUSTRALIA The Protestant Alliance Friendly Society of Australasia (PAFSA) was a mutual provident society of inter-denominational Protestants who first established a presence in Western Australia on the 26

th April 1892. This

came about when J.T. Iredale from Sydney arrived in the State with Regalia and Charter to empower J. Arnold, a Bundaberg (Queensland) P.M. to initiate the inaugural meeting of the Society at Lodge No. 87 (forerunner to City of Perth Lodge No. 1). Shortly thereafter Lodge No. 90 Pride of the West (which eventually became Pride of the West No. 2) was commissioned in Fremantle on the 27

th April, 1893. Initially PAFSA operations in

Western Australia were conducted under the auspices and imprimatur of the N.S.W. Grand Council. However, in February 1896 a local State Grand Council was convened. Various local Lodges were subsequently commissioned. Prior to the advent of Medicare, income protection and death benefits mutual aid societies, such as the Western Australian PAFSA, played a significant welfare support and social focal point role in Western Australia community life (Green and Cromwell, 1984, p. xiv). The Maylands Loyalty Lodge No. 16 Lodge Collection (Acc. 5689A): The records described in this collection specifically relate to the operation of the Protestant Alliance Friendly Society of Australasia (PAFSA) Maylands Loyalty Lodge No. 16 between its inauguration on the 23

rd February

1922 and its subsequent dissolution on the 20th

November, 1998. In December 1921 Victoria Lodge No. 3 (Subiaco) forwarded a listing of PAFSA members residing in the Maylands area to Grand Executive Council of Western Australia to consider in the proposal to establish a new Lodge. Grand Council deliberations and a request for other Lodges to submit lists of members residing in the Maylands area resulted in the formation of the Maylands Loyalty Lodge No.16. The inaugural meeting was conducted on Thursday, 23

rd February, 1922 at the Church of Christ Hall, 9

th Avenue, Maylands. Deputy Grand

Master Williams presided over this inaugural meeting with the subsequent election of J.T. Magill as Worshipful Master and W.I. Cooper as Secretary. Regular meetings were conducted at various venues including the Presbyterian School Hall on 7

th Avenue, Maylands Town Hall and Masonic Hall located on the corner of 9th

Avenue and Carrington Street. On the 27th

July 1931 the Maylands Loyalty Lodge No. 16 assumed joint ownership of the Maylands Friendly Society Hall in Caledonian Avenue. Meetings were conducted at this venue till early 1943 when the facility was requisitioned by army for defense need. The Masonic Hall in Inglewood was used as an alternative venue until the 23

rd June 1950 when the Lodge meeting place reverted

to the Maylands Friendly Society Hall. The hall and adjacent block was purchased by the Independent Order of Oddfellows (I.O.O.F.) in 1980. The IOOF undertook significant building renovations including the addition of the two (2) additional Lodge meeting rooms. During the refurbishment of the Hall the Lodge meet in the Scout Hall located on Birkett Street, Maylands. The Maylands Loyalty Lodge returned to the Caledonian Avenue Hall on 7

th November, 1980 and continued to meet in Lodge Meeting Room Two (2) until it’s dissolution on the 20

th

November, 1998. Various PAFSA members from the Maylands Lodge No. 16 served in official capacities on the Grand Council of Western Australia including the following Worshipful Grand Masters E.A. Anderson (1943-46), W. Gunn (1960-62), E. Taylor (1974-76), R.G. Taylor (1981-82), R.S. Cocks (1985-86) and Worshipful Mistress L.R. Wrigglesworth (1983-1984). Additionally W. Gunn served as a past trustee and as did L.R. Wrigglesworth who was serving as trustee at the time of the decommissioning of the PAFSA in Western Australia. The following three (3) Lodge officers served as District Masters: E.A. Anderson, E.G. Taylor and K.D. Dancer. Past secretaries in chronological sequence of the Maylands Loyalty Lodge No. 16 include W.L. Cooper, L.A. Morrison, H. Harvey, J.L. Patterson, R.J. Lynch, A.E.D Jobling, J.S. Whyte, J.L. Patterson, H. Cant. E. Anderson, D. Stuart, F. Coles, W. Gunn, K. Talbot, R. Illes and Mrs Beryl Dancer who was secretary from 1980 till the dissolution of the Lodge in November, 1998.

CIRCULARS

5690A/8 1961 General circular issued by the Grand Secretary Mapstone to the City of Perth Lodge No 1. Secretary and other local Lodge secretaries. Content items include: exhortation for increased local membership participation and social interactions especially as some Lodges were experiencing significant membership declines – one of suggested strategies to offset this membership contraction is a concerted campaign to enroll children in the Protestant Alliance Friendly Society of Australasia into full membership once they turn the age of sixteen (16). There is also an explanation, (viz Special Funeral Fund) to account for a minor adjustment in the forthcoming Quarterly Accounts. A B5 sized addendum affixed to the front page of the circular – lists number of juvenile application forms received from the various local Lodges.

Mr. Tunnock was also the first dentist in Western Australia to register under the Dental Act of 1894. Front page of Minute Book containing the Charter and signatories to the Charter badly damaged – crude attempt to repair torn sheet with scotch tape. Rear cover of Minute Book No. 1 contains a price listing of assorted Society stationery and paraphernalia such manuals, rule books, price cards, balance sheets, returns etc. A listing of the ten (10) ‘core’ values of the Society are also listed on the inside back cover of Minute Book No 1.

RETURNS

Financial (referred to PART A) and numerical returns (referred to as Numerical Return PART B) of the Maylands Loyalty Lodge No. 16. Essentially they are standardized annual reports detailing income and expenditures and overall membership statistics. The original or copy of the returns was lodged with the Grand Executive Council of Western Australia initially under the auspices of the Friendly Societies Act 1894–1923, 1894-1939 and subsequently under revised Friendly Society Act, 1894–1964. Overall it appears that the basic reporting structure of the returns changed minimally over time. Reporting periods namely the current conventional June to June timeframe for the financial year does vary (typically reported from the 31

st May of the year) in earlier returns (viz, 1934 –

1942).
