What’s the difference between a mask and a respirator?

Mask Masks protect both the wearer and patient by acting as a barrier to body fluids, droplets, and particulate matter.

RespiratorRespirators protect the wearer and patient* from airborne particles, including viruses and bacteria, by utilizing a tight seal against the face and high-efficiency filtration materials.

* Respirators with valves will not be effective in protecting patients and the environment from airborne particles.

Explanation of PPE Materials


SPPSpunbond PolypropyleneSPP or Spunbond Polyproylene is polypropylene plastic that is melted down, then extruded through small holes to create super fine fibers. These melted fibers are then randomly laid and bonded to create the thinnest and most breathable PPE fabric. SPP provides excellent comfort, but has the least fluid-resistance.

SMS Spunbond-Meltblown-SpunbondSMS or “Spunbond-Meltblown-Spunbond” is a 3-ply material made from two sheets of spunbonded polypropylene with one sheet of meltblown polypropyene in the middle. It is thicker than spunbond polypropylene and its meltblown layer acts as a better barrier against fluids and particles.

Poly-coated SMSPolyethylene Coated SMSPolyethylene Coated SMS or “Poly-coated SMS” has the same barrier qualities as SMS, but with added fluid resistance and particulate protection provided by a polyethylene coating. The polyethylene acts as a plastic shield to defend against any high velocity spray.
