Prostate is a walnut shape and sizedgland present in the male reproductivesystem.

There are two lobes, which are enclosedby an external layer. It makes some part ofsemen.


Due to increase in age there is increase in size of prostate known as prostatic hyperplasia.

This hyperplasia can be benign or malignant.

BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) also known as an enlarged prostate.


It is more common in men over the ageof 50.

It is regarded as a common part of agingin men.


40 % of men in their 50s and 75% of men in their 70s suffer from BPH.

Benign means non-cancerous and hyperplasia means increase in size of the prostate glands. BPH is not a type of cancer.

In Ayurveda, prostate gland is known as Ashteela. BPH is akin to vatashteela in Ayurveda, which is a type of mutraghata. Mutraghata means low passage of urine due to any kind of obstruction. Mutraghata is caused due to vitiation of vata (apana vayu).


According to Ayurveda, vata is vitiated due to old age, indigestion, mental stress, indulgence in sexual activities, cold and dry food items and controlling natural urges like urination, defecation.
