HIGHLIGHTS

THE PROSSERMAN JCC DAYCARE AND PRESCHOOL EXPERIENCEThe Prosserman JCC Daycare and Preschool, housed in the David & Esther Freiman Childhood Education Centre, was created to allow children maximum self-expression and reach their full academic and social potential while connecting to Jewish traditions.

In addition to educational excellence, the Prosserman JCC Daycare and Preschool is truly unique offering our children access to all of the Prosserman JCC’s facilities and programming allowing parents to go no further to fit in extra curricular needs from music and dance to sports and art. Extended hours are also available.

PHILOSOPHY, CURRICULUM AND BEST PRACTICEOur focus is on early development and incorporating techniques and strategies to ensure that your child receives an advanced education rooted in Jewish history and tradition. Through creative and hands-on experiences, we create an educational and cultural environment to support the development of each child’s social, cognitive, language and motor skills. Children are prepared for both social and academic opportunities and milestones that will arise in their young lives.

JEWISH LIFEOur interactive curriculum is founded upon the richness of Jewish values and tradition. We incorporate Hebrew language and place an emphasis on Tzedakah, welcoming guests, acts of kindness and Tikun Olam. Shabbat and holidays are also a large part of our curriculum and are taught through literature, music, exploration

and play.

FAMILY MEMBERSHIP INCLUDED!All parents want the best for their children, but the Prosserman JCC wants what is best for the entire family! When you sign up for Daycare & Preschool, your family will receive a complimentary membership to JCC fitness.

TODDLERS (18 MONTHS – 2 1/2 YEARS)The multisensory hands-on curriculum for our youngest students introduces activities that are fun, educational and vital to development. A variety of art materials encourage curiosity, build language and social skills and develop ne motor skills. Sensory activities and simple games encourage counting and recognition skills. While celebrating Jewish holidays and traditions, our toddlers are exposed to simple Hebrew words, blessings and songs. Our caring, dedicated teachers provide a loving atmosphere for our youngest children.

NURSERY (3 YEARS OLD)The curriculum for our nursery program includes many prereading activities. Art includes free expressive work in addition to traditional Judaic creative opportunities. These activities enhance ne motor development while providing self-esteem and social development growth. Our Judaic program focuses on counting and colours in Hebrew with an introduction to Aleph Bet. Jewish holidays, traditions and Shabbat celebrations continue to be meaningful experiences for the children.

SK (5 YEARS OLD)The senior kindergarten curriculum focuses on building literacy and numeracy. Guided by teachers, students embark on word recognition and begin to read. Their curiosity is challenged through exposure to enrichment units, such as science and current events. Curriculum incorporates the Ontario Kindergarten Program and the Early Learning for Every Child guidelines. The Judaic component expands Hebrew vocabulary while incorporating Hebrew storytelling. “Seeing the World through Jewish Eyes” is the focus for the celebrations of the Jewish holidays and traditions. In senior kindergarten, preparation begins for life beyond the Prosserman JCC Daycare and Preschool as we equip children with the skills needed to succeed in primary school.

JK (4 YEARS OLD) The junior kindergarten curriculum exposes children to literacy and numeracy. Children are encouraged to develop their ne motor skills as they learn how to print letters. Our program incorporates the Ontario Kindergarten Program and the Early Learning for Every Child guidelines. Hebrew is oered twice a week to further enhance the values of tzedakah, holiday traditions and vocabulary.

PRESCHOOL (2 1/2 - 3 YEARS)When children turn 2 1/2, they a move up to the preschool rooms focusing on building independence and problem-solving skills. The preschool curriculum includes a balance of educational and recreational experiences developed to stimulate a variety of cognitive, ne and gross motor skills that lead to prereading and prenumeracy readiness. The preschool Judaic program continues teaching Jewish values through the celebration of Shabbat and Jewish holidays. Hebrew vocabulary is expanded, and the joys of Jewish traditions and experiences are introduced.

LEMON TREE (106 MINUTES) - Hebrew/English subtitles Widow and empty nester Salma Zidane lives on the Palestinian West Bank, in a little house anked by lemon trees planted by her great grandparents. Unfortunately, when the Israeli minister of defense builds a house adjacent to her own, her lemon trees are deemed a security risk. Salma hires a lawyer to prevent the powerful man from having her ancestral trees removed, but the odds are stacked against her, and to make matters worse, she begins to fall in love with her lawyer. Things seem bleak, but it looks like hope could shine in from an unexpected source, when the minister’s neglected wife develops sympathy for Salma’s plight.

LIBERTY HEIGHTS (127 MINUTES) - English

It is Baltimore in 1954 and everything is changing. In this year, school desegregation is happening for the rst time, bringing black and white children from dierent neighbourhoods into the same classrooms. In this year, the dawning of rock’n’roll is giving teenagers their rst slice of a musical world that will become uniquely their own. And in this year, the Kurtzman family developed a newly heightened understanding of what it means to be Jewish in a rapidly growing world in this story which examines the changing times of the mid-1950s and issues of race, class and religious distinction as seen through the eyes of a particular American family.

DIVAN (90 MINUTES) - English

As a teenager, lmmaker Pearl Gluck left her Orthodox Jewish clan in Brooklyn for secular life in Manhattan. Many years later, Pearl’s father has one wish: that she marry and return to the community. Pearl, however, takes a more creative approach to mend the breach. She travels to Hungary to retrieve a turn-of-the-century family heirloom: a couch upon which esteemed rabbis once slept. En route for the ancestral divan, Pearl encounters a colorful cast of characters who provide guidance and inspiration, including a couch exporter, her ex-Communist cousin in Budapest, a pair of Hungarian-American matchmakers and a renegade group of formerly ultra-Orthodox Jews.

THE BAND’S VISIT (87 MINUTES) - Hebrew/English subtitles The Alexandria Ceremonial Police Orchestra, consisting of eight men, arrive in Israel from Egypt. They have been booked by an Arab cultural center in Petah Tiqva, but through a miscommunication, the band takes a bus to Bet Hatikva, a ctional town in the middle of the Negev Desert. There is no transportation out of the city that day, and there are no hotels for them to spend the night in. The band members dine at a small restaurant where the owner, Dina (Ronit Elkabetz) invites them to stay the night at her apartment, at her friends’ apartment, and in the restaurant. That night challenges all of the characters.

MY FAVORITE YEAR (92 MINUTES) - English

Set in 1954 New York, My Favorite Year is the story of an alcoholic former star of Hollywood’s Golden Age and his inability to adapt to the live television programs of the fties. Peter O’Toole stars as the Errol Flynn-John Barrymore-esque Alan Swann who has traded in fencing and swashbuckling lms for booze and women. Mark Linn-Baker is Benjy Stone, the junior writer on the TV comedy/variety series, The King Kaiser Show and an incurable fan of Swann. Stone is commissioned to baby-sit Swann (O’Toole) after the latter has a disastrous encounter with the show’s star, King Kaiser, as a result of a drinking binge. As the lm progresses toward Swann’s live appearance on television, Stone begins to share his charge’s escalating panic over the upcoming event.

Movie Mondays features monthly screenings of classic and contemporary lms that highlight Jewish characters or themes. A discussion of each lm follows by one of the Prosserman JCC reviewers: Ethel Cooper, Bruria Cooperman, Michael Slodovnick or Cyrel Troster.

FRANCIS BACON AND HENRY MOORE: A JOURNEY INTO BRITISH ART PART 2Though they were neither friends nor collaborators, painter Francis Bacon (1909-1992) and sculptor Henry Moore (1898-1986) were contemporaries who shared an obsession with expressing themes of suering, struggle and survival in relation to the human body. Both artists survived the Second World War and were subsequently haunted by the conict, represented through manifestations of the body. This series examines their creativity and unique visions.

TURNER TO HOCKNEY: A JOURNEY INTO BRITISH ART PART 1This course will explore the genius of J.M.W. Turner, known as the “painter of light”. His daring innovations in landscape paintings and watercolors preceded the Impressionists and inuenced some of the best British artists from the 18th century to the present. In the 20th and 21st centuries, we will focus on the British artist, David Hockney. He is a renaissance man able to work easily among dierent media. Other inuential artists that will be reviewed are Thomas Gainsborough and John Constable.

FILM LECTURE SERIES WITH KEVIN COURRIER

NOTES AND FRAMES: THE NEGLECTED ART OF FILM AND MUSIC One of the most misunderstood and least appreciated aspects of movie making is the lm score. Even though music has been an integral part of movies since the silent era, many believe that the best lm score is the kind that you don’t notice. Trace the long and fascinating history of movie music as well as examine the works of many of the art forms great and various composers.

BRANDO When actor Marlon Brando arrived on the screen in the early fties in the lm adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire, he changed the cultural landscape with the same force and controversy that Elvis Presley did in popular music a few years later. Examine the early years of his screen acting to illustrate what Brando changed and dene the legacy he left for a contemporary actors and actresses.

NOWHERE LAND: THE DARK SIDE OF THE BEATLES’ UTOPIAN DREAMOn February 11th, 1963, as part of their debut album “Please Please Me” the Beatles recorded “There’s a Place”. This song laid the foundation for the utopian dream of the sixties. Within that dream, they also laid the seeds of a darker vision which emerged in the counterculture that the Beatles music helped create. Examine how the Beatles’ music created both dreams and nightmares in their pursuit of an articial paradise, Nowhere Land, built on the principles of pleasure and fulllment.

WOODY ALLENWhen comic Woody Allen rst began making movies in the late sixties (Bananas, Take the Money and Run), he became a heroic voice of the counter-culture who satirized popular stereotypes. He continued to be an artist of his time through Love and Death and Sleeper, but after the success of Annie Hall (Academy Award, Best Picture) he began to doubt that voice. He started making solemn dramas (Interiors, Another Woman) instead of comedies. While he continues to work on his own terms, audiences still wait and hope and respond - as they did with Midnight in Paris.

I AM THE CAMERA When a documentary director sets out to make a lm, they usually set out with the goal of reaching some kind of objective truth. Sometimes the lmmaker gets so caught up in their subject that they lose all objectivity. The story becomes their personal obsession and the movie reveals as much about the director as it does his/her subject. In “I am the Camera”, four lms are reviewed that touch on the personal obsessions of the documentary director in order to understand how the lm’s subject and the lm’s compulsions can combine to create a riveting viewing experience.
