“Progress Flight Academy is dedicated to developing pilots with a professional attitudeand a genuine operational capability at a reasonable cost.”
IntroductionProgress Flight Academy leads the South African flight training industry.
Since September 1981 we have been providing full time residential flight training courses atProgress aerodrome and since 1995 have trained pilots for transition to First Officer with airlines.
In 2009 we obtained CAA approval for the first Integrated Professional Pilot Course in South Africa. This increased training quality and reduced cost.
This year we introduced a ‘Premium’ Integrated Professional Pilot Course which represents aquantum leap in quality and a substantial enhancement in the operational capability of graduates.
The key to this development is the purchase of new Vulcanair P68R EFIS equipped multi-enginepiston aeroplanes and Vulcanair P68R type specific ‘simulators’. Progress Flight Academy is theonly flight school in South Africa using FNPT IIs that precisely replicate the aeroplane used forinstrument training. All the procedural and operational instrument training on this course isconducted in multi-engine simulators and aeroplanes. This major development enables us toachieve a superlative standard for graduates entering general aviation, and will enhance thetransition to First Officer training for airline candidates.
The record of successful F.O. training and appointments of our graduates is outstanding.
StandardsCourses offered by Progress Flight Academy are based on best international practice which is theEuropean Aviation Safety Authority (EASA) Joint Aviation Regulations Flight Crew Licencing (JAR-FCL) standard. Our International courses comply with all requirements of the International CivilAviation Organisation (ICAO) and the South African Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). Graduates fromour Professional Pilot Courses achieve outstanding operational capability.
InstructorsJohn English leads the Flight Instructor team. With over 40 years experience as flight instructor,he has both a military and civilian flying background. John holds an Airline Transport Pilot Licencewith a Grade 1 Flight Instructor Rating, is a CAA Designated Flight Examiner, and is also a qualifiedMechanical Engineer and Aircraft Maintenance Engineer.
All our Flight Instructors completed a Professional Pilot Course at Progress Flight Academy, and allare multi engine Instrument Rated full time employees. A Flight Instructor is assigned to eachphase of your flight training. The number of students to each instructor is restricted, so that yourtime is used productively.
Ground school lectures are provided by full time instructors of Progress Flight Academy. By limitingthe size of courses we ensure that you get the personal attention you deserve, and the instructorsare available outside formal lecture times to assist you with personal tuition as necessary.
FleetThe multi-engine aeroplane is now the high quality Italian Vulcanair P68R. This six seat cabin classhigh wing aeroplane was designed as a multi-engine aeroplane - the pilot sits ahead of the wingand engines with an uninterrupted view above and below, similar to an airliner. The Vulcanair isequipped with state of the art Garmin G1000 EFIS (Electronic Flight Information System), similarto airline equipment. The quality of design and construction of this aeroplane is outstanding.

The Vulcanair P68R is a very stable aeroplane and has the feel of a large aeroplane. The controlshave excellent authority such that the demonstrated crosswind capability is an amazing 25 kt. Weexpect the transition to jet aeroplanes to be easier from this machine than the typical trainingtwins in use.
The Piper Warrior III is used for elementary flight training. The seven Warriors in our fleet are latemodel low wing four seat aircraft with 160 hp Lycoming engines. These aircraft are stable, docile, and easy to handle, and perform well with a good climb rate and cruise speed. The fuel enduranceis excellent with very safe reserves for the routes flown, and they are well equipped with modernGarmin GNS 430 avionics and features such as standby instrument air system and emergencylocator transmitter.
All the aeroplanes are owned, maintained and operated exclusively by the Academy. This ensuresuninterrupted availability to students.
Flight SimulatorsWe commissioned the design and construction of two Flight and Navigation Procedures Trainer II‘simulators’ using actual aeroplane forward fuselage sections that replicate precisely the VulcanairP68R aeroplane. These FNPT II devices qualify for 40 hours training credit on an integrated course.
The quality of training is greatly enhanced as all simulator training is now on this multi-engineequipment. Students have the opportunity to practise instrument approaches in their own area.
MaintenanceWe have our own Aircraft Maintenance Organisation (AMO) that handles all routine service andmaintenance. This enables us to keep our aircraft in optimum condition and readily available.Students are also able to gain greater insight into the technical aspects of the course.

Progress AerodromeProgress is a private aerodrome developed specifically as a training aerodrome for the exclusiveuse of Progress Flight Academy to avoid the frustration and wasted time that accompanies flighttraining at busy airports. The rural setting of grass runways and surrounding woodlands justoutside the Port Elizabeth city limits and the paucity of air traffic make it an absolute pleasure forflight training.
The General Flying Area is only 4 miles away and Port Elizabeth International Airport is only 13miles, so we are very well situated for available flying facilities.
At the Port Elizabeth Airport we have ready access to world class Navigational and Approach Aidsso that Instrument Approach procedures are practised extensively by students and considerableexperience of operating in controlled airspace is gained.
CampusStudents are accommodated in single study-bedrooms in one of the ‘lodges’ on the aerodromecampus. Each ‘lodge’ has twelve study-bedrooms, ablutions, a small kitchenette and a lounge withDSTV. Wireless internet access is available free of charge in all lodges.
Courses include full board accommodation for the duration of the course in one continuous period. This includes three meals a day, tea or coffee at any time, and laundry.
The ‘mess’ is the focal point of the campus. Our on-site catering staff provide the meals in thedining room. There is a lounge with coffee bar and pool table overlooking the swimming pool.Facilities available to residential students include a library and clubhouse overlooking the runways.
TransportTransport is provided between the Port Elizabeth airport and Progress Aerodrome at the beginningand end of the course, for approved breaks, necessary trips such as examination sittings, as wellas for periodic outings. Students do not need personal transport.
ClothingStudents on the Professional Pilot Programme wear uniform.

Private Pilot Licence Course Guide
Private Pilot Course Guide - 140415.docx Page 1 of 2
Introduction
The aim of the Private Pilot Licence (Aeroplane) course is to train the student pilot to fly safely andefficiently by day in weather conditions appropriate to Visual Flight Rules (VFR). The basic licence canbe extended by the qualification for a Night Rating and Instrument Rating.
The applicant for a PPL must be at least 17 years of age and in possession of a valid Flight Crewmedical certificate.
The Privileges of a Private Pilot Licence (PPL) are to act, but not for remuneration, as pilot incommand of an aircraft and carry passengers for private or business purposes.
The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) establishes minimum requirements for aircrewlicensing, and the South African Private Pilot Licence is an ICAO licence. This course meets therequirements of the South African Civil Aviation Regulations.
Flight Training
The Progress Flight Academy Private Pilot Licence course comprises 53 hours of flight training in aPiper Warrior.
The PPL course has four distinct flight training phases; pre-solo manoeuvres to first solo flight, solo consolidation and advanced manoeuvres, navigation flights, and revision and flight tests.
On your PPL course you will normally fly with the same Flight Instructor for the entire course (exceptfor progress checks and the flight tests). There is normally one Flight Instructor to two students oneach PPL course, ensuring that your time is used productively.
The highlight of the course is the ‘first solo’ flight, which produces a unique feeling of satisfaction. Thefirst solo is celebrated with a traditional dip in the pool.
Ground Training
The theoretical training proceeds in parallel with the flight training and is a combination of 72 hours oflectures and 82 hours of assignments and individual study. The groundschool covers the basics ofHuman Factors, Meteorology, Aviation Law, Navigation, Flight Planning and Performance, Enginesand Airframes, Principles of Flight and the syllabus for the Radiotelephony Certificate (Aeronautical).
Examinations and tests
We are a CAA approved test centre so all eight CAA examinations are written on-line at Progress. Theseven PPL examinations are single subject papers, and all questions have multiple choice answers. There is also a CAA examination for the Radiotelephony Certificate. . The examinations are completedprogressively throughout the course. The practical test for the Radiotelephony Certificate is conductedwith the flight tests.
The General Flight Test takes about one hour during which the various manoeuvres covered in thetraining syllabus are demonstrated and there is a separate Navigation Flight Test.
On completion of the course you will qualify for the Private Pilot Licence (Aeroplane), the RestrictedRadiotelephony Certificate (Aeronautical) and your Progress Flight Academy wings.
