Old Time Dances 1 ain’t misbehavin’ I had fully expected to leisurely dance some two steps, waltzes, and polkas on a Sunday afternoon - until I saw her walk through the door. Tall, blond, tanned, slender, and fit, wearing a ‘40s era colorful dress with a red bow at the waist. I had danced with her several months earlier and then saw her act in a musical comedy. I had hoped our paths would cross again, but concluded she must be out of circulation - then she walked through the door. She asked me, “What step is this?” I answered, “Did we bother with steps before?” So off we went spinning, turning, skipping on a fortunately open floor. Some decorative balls were hanging from the ceiling. I jumped up to bump my head against one, and then she jumped up to bump her head against another. And so the afternoon went. I asked her, “How did you act like that in the play?” She replied, “I just played myself.” I asked her, “Have you tried improv?” She replied, “At work.” I complimented her, “You sure are strong!” and then asked, “Do you lift weights?” “No,” she replied, “bales.” “Bales of hay?” I asked, feeling her calloused hands. “Yeah, sometimes two at a time,” she grinned. I asked her, “Do you ever get tired?” She replied, “A little bit.” She asked, “And you?” I replied, “A little bit.” The band played Happy Birthday for her. Her girlfriend passed out a moist rhubarb cake.

I wished her a Happy Birthday and told her, “You’re one of a kind!” Another woman asked me afterwards, “Is she your girlfriend?”

I am doing a completely DIY wedding, and very low cost. However, for our reception, I'm torn about renting a dance floor. The reception in in the backyard, which is nice and flat. But there will be older people at the wedding. Aside from their complaints about taking off their shoes to dance, I'm concerned someone might slip and fall. But the $500 price for a dance floor is outrageous! I'm not even spending that much on food! Any helpful suggestions? Opinions? Should I just suck it up and rent the dance floor? Thanks!

bluzbro2000 answered 4 years ago You want to feel like you pushing away slightly from your partner. It should feel like he’s pulling you towards him. As a previous poster said, you never want to have spaghetti arms but you also don't want to have it so stiff that it's like tree branches either. Both ways and it's hard to feel the lead. You want to be able to move with the music but have enough there to react to what he’s doing. And that could actually help you stay safe. On a crowded dance floor, your partner should be looking around for the other dancers on the floor. If it looks like you’re going to back into someone, he should give a lead to move you out of the way. If you’ve got spaghetti arms, you won’t feel the lead.

One thing that my instructors suggest is that your elbows should never go past your torso. I hope this helps

Polka music is a lively, energetic style of music that originated in what is now known as the Czech Republic (then known as Bohemia) and spread quickly into Prague and the rest of Eastern Europe in the early 1800’s. It quickly

spread west to Paris and went quickly to ballrooms and theaters throughout all of Europe and even America in a wide variety of versions. The dance was first introduced into the ballrooms of Prague in 1835. The name of the dance (pulka) is Czech for “half-step”, referring to the rapid shift from one foot to the other, while in Polish the word polka means a “polish woman”. Polka has regional variations such as Rheinlander, polkamazurka, and Polish polka based

Beer Barrel Polka, also known as Roll out the Barrel, is a song which became popular worldwide during World War II.

The music was composed by the Czech musician Jaromír Vejvoda in 1927.[1] Eduard Ingriš wrote the first

arrangement of the piece, after Vejvoda came upon the melody and sought Ingriš's help in refining it. At that time, it

was played without lyrics as Modřanská polka (“Polka of Modřany”). Its first text was written later (in 1934) by Václav

Zeman – with the title Škoda lásky[2] (“Wasted Love”).

The polka became famous around the world. In June 1939, "Beer Barrel Polka", as recorded by Will Glahé, was #1

on the Hit Parade. This version was distributed by Shapiro Bernstein. Glahé's earlier 1934 recording sold many

copies in its German version Rosamunde (it is possible the reason for the rapid spread was due to the occupation of

Czechoslovakia by Nazi Germany, and subsequent emigration of thousands of Czechs to other parts of the world,

bringing this catchy tune with them). The authors of the English lyrics were Lew Brown and Wladimir Timm.

Meanwhile, the song was recorded and played by many others such as Andrews Sisters in 1939, Glenn Miller

Orchestra, Benny Goodman, and Billie Holiday. Bobby Vinton also had his version of the song, which peaked at #33

in 1975.

During World War II, versions in many other languages were created and the song was popular among soldiers,

regardless of their alliances. It was claimed many times that the song was written in the country where it had just

why all the security? The patrons seemed pretty tame when I arrived at 7:30pm, so I wondered about the serious looking muscular, young men with SECURITY on the back of their shirts at the establishment on University Avenue, but when 10:30pm rolled around, and the young people began streaming in looking like they had been already imbibing and then engaging in rammy behavior, I understood why all the security.

midnight hour At 7:30pm I showed up for a polka band scheduled to play 8-12pm. Since the few dancers present were partnered or grouped up, I glided alone around the floor with the exception of the one woman

who asked me to dance because her husband didn’t and the other woman whose husband motioned me over to have me dance with his wife because he didn’t. At 10:30pm the young crowd came with the overflow standing on the dance floor and drinking with a few throwing each other around in a semblance of the polka. A few young women asked me to dance, and I did my best to hold them upright. At 12pm the polka band sang its closer, but for the young crowd the night was just starting, as the lights went down, the volume went up, and the loudspeakers blared Out of My Mind. It was at that time that I decided that it was getting late and I had to go home.

The Rhythm Playboys have been around for 53 years, but you’d never know it from looking at bandleader Ryan

Herman. Him leading the Rhythm Playboys — which still boasts two original members — is almost like Justin Bieber fronting the Rolling Stones. Herman, whose day job is teaching second grade in the Eleva-Strum School District, is in his mid-30s but probably could pass for a decade younger, in part because of his ever-present grin. Herman’s father, Ralph, was a dairy farmer in rural Osseo when the Rhythm Playboys got started. He played accordion with the band for half a century, playing his last show only two days before his sudden death in February 2008. Ryan Herman joined the band 15 years ago and with his father’s passing the front man role became his by default. “I didn’t really want that job, but it happens,” he said. Herman has to be among the busiest musicians in the region. Between shows with the Rhythm Playboys and a constant stream of solo appearances, he said he performs about 25 times a month. On July 22 alone, he played three shows, then started the long drive to Denver for a show there. The Rhythm Playboys have a reputation as a top-notch polka band, and that’s no surprise. The band won a bunch of

Wisconsin Polka Music awards in 2009, including Band of the Year and, for Herman, Personality of the Year. But Herman said there’s more to the Rhythm Playboys than just polka. He considers it a dance band, and on any

given night they’ll play waltzes, two-steps, foxtrots, swing, old-time country and more. “All of it is danceable,” Herman said. “If it’s not a beat that they can dance to, we don’t play it.”
