PROPS AND COSTUMES Why are props and costumes used: Props and costumes in productions of movies and television shows to make the narrative more realistic for the demographic. In which the tone is being portrayed depends on the genre of the production and how the camerawork and editing uses this effectively. For example my genre is thriller and this is how we used our props effectively and what we used:

Costume:Why was it used? How was It used effectively to fit the conventions of my genre?Trim laced black leather gloves It was used to hide all identity of the only character in our shots- however the audience cant connote how many people wear the gloves at different times as theirs no evidence to support more than one or just one character. It was used effectively to create enigma on the audience, however left little subliminal messages that the character was a female due to the denotations of the lace trim on the gloves- causing counter-hegemonic reading.Plain black hooded cotton jumper I decided to use a plain black hooded jumper as it leaves no evidence to the gender or any information about my main character. Whereas other materials can lead one gender in particular. My having the hooded jumper over sized from the actor it doesnt give away the figure of the character allowing the gender have the character to remain unknown- allowing tension and mystery (enigma ) to build up for the peek of the film.

Props:Why was it used? How was It used effectively to fit the conventions of my genre?Darkroom Images I used the school supplies of the darkroom to produce these images, connoting that our character was smart has he/she has perfected the skill, connoting the length of time he or her have been doing this. This was used within a large use of close ups of different photos in different situations to contrast what is happening on screen, allowing significance importance to what the picture holds within it which may past target audiences eye.Builder or hardware tools These were used to portray and connote the sinister tone to my production. Also creating a counter-hegemonic reading due to the stereotypical contrast of our suspected female character working with tools.Lighting and variety of shots were used with these props. Lighting was used connote harsh tone in the harsh low key lighting and a rare flare of light reflection of a metal signifying the importance attracting the audiences eyes. The large about of shots used are all aimed on props, leaving subliminal messages to the re-strict narrative.Heart

One of the props used was a heart, we used this to really explicitly portray the sinister tone we are trying to connote to the demographic. The heart was used in a close up shot, exposing all the parts and detail of the heart, causing enigma and even making the audience uneasy, this makes the shot really powerful as it infers the genre. Props:Why was it used? How was It used effectively to fit the conventions of my genre?Newspaper- with the murder storylines and headings The shots using these props are shown in the beginning allowing the audience to easily and quickly signify the genre as, crime thriller. I believe that these props have a great importance to our production as people have difficulty in telling apart horror from thriller therefore the use of these props are significant.

Purple ripped teddy with dirt and fake blood This again leaves subliminal messages in a counter-hegemonic reading of our character being a female, with the anti-stereotype of dirty and bloody state of the soft toy. This toy was used in a number of shots, one including the stabbing of the toy, signifying the emotional fragile state triggered which can be inferred and linked to a lash of femalesPROPS AND COSTUMES CONTINUED
