1 Issue #55 - Wednesday, October 28, 2009 On Thursday, October 22, 2009, AUST held a workshop to stimulate interaction among various regional universities and organizations, and to build up a Partnership among the attendees to embark on a prospective Tempus Joint European Project supported by the European Training Foundation. The event hosted 45 individuals, representing academic and professional sectors from France, Belgium, Estonia, Egypt, Jordan, Tunisia, Iraq, and Lebanon. This workshop was organized by Dr. Aziz Barbar, Chairperson of the CSI Department at AUST and Vice President of the Lebanese Information Technology Association (LITA), Dr. Ziad Abu-Faraj, Chairperson of the Biomedical Engineering Department at AUST, and Dr. Mona Al- Achkar Jabbour, professor of Law at the Lebanese University and President of LITA. This event succeeded the completion of the third regional conference on “Cyber Security: Protection of Private Documents, Intellectual Property, and National Security” that was held at Saint Joseph University on October 20-22, 2009, and which hosted the aforementioned 45 members. Dr. Barbar delivered a welcoming speech on behalf of AUST during the opening session that was under the patronage of H.E. Professor Ibrahim Najjar, Minister of Justice. The participants were first treated to lunch, after which a gathering took place in the President’s Office, whereby President Hiam Sakr and Provost Dr. Nabeel Haidar gave warm welcoming speeches. Subsequently, the attendees convened in the Conference Hall at AUST for two productive hours. Dr. Abu-Faraj gave a welcoming speech, which included a synopsis about AUST, then a delineation of the role of AUST as the Grant Applicant Institution on this prospective project. He then emphasized that one of the main objectives of this meeting was to attempt to define the role that each of the partners would play in this project. He then gave the floor to Dr. Jabbour, the Principal Investigator of this Project, who touched on the specifics of the project and its significance to the region. She then initiated an open discussion which was chaired and moderated by Dr. Hesham Auda, Special Assistant to the Under- Secretary-General for General Assembly and Conference Management, United Nations, NY, USA. Among the prestigious guests were: H.E. Dr. Adel Al-Touwaysi (Higher Council for Science and Technology, Jordan); Professor Jos Dumortier (Director of K.U. Leuven Interdisciplinary Center for Law & ICT, Belgium); Professor Jean-Jacques Lavenue (Director of “l’Institut de Recherche sur l’Évolution de l’Environnement Normatif des Activités Transnationales”, France). The event was concluded by the distribution of a token of appreciation to each attendee by President H. Sakr. AUST Holds a Workshop to Stimulate Interaction Among Various Regional Universities and Organizations In an effort to encourage cultural liaisons, Dr. George Massé, Chairperson of the International Affairs Department, invited the new appointed Ukrainian Ambassador, Dr. Volodimir Koval, to AUST. The Ambassador had the chance to meet with President Hiam Sakr and discuss the possibility of cultural and educational exchanges between the Ukrainian universities and AUST. It was agreed to organize and hold a Ukrainian Day at AUST soon, whereby the AUST students will be exposed to the different aspects of such a rich culture. It is worth noting that an AUST delegate, headed by President Hiam Sakr and Provost Nabeel Haidar as well as the Chairperson of the International Affairs Department, is to visit Ukraine and sign an agreement with the Institute of International Relations of Kiev University.
