Background:
According to the 3 year strategic plan of Eureka Design co., ltd. for the year 2013 to 2015, Virtual machine and operation excellent was already being included as one of the important area for development and investment by Eureka company. This virtual machine prototyping technology will help to increase our productivity, reduces our customer validation time, increase customer satisfaction, add value to our product and
give Eureka edge over its competitor. As a newly established “Mechanical Design Support“ department and its responsible focus area of new R&D and special project for Eureka product, this department would like to request for the approval of this project and budget allocation via this report. This report will cover more detail about this technology, its short term and long term benefits, existing technologies and solution providers in market and recommend possible direction to go ahead to start this project.
Introduction:
Virtual machine or virtual reality (VR) is relatively a new technology.VR is a computer simulation that used 3D graphics and devices to provide an interactive visual experience. It can simulate physical presence in places in the real world, as well as in imaginary worlds. VR is often used to describe a wide variety of applications commonly associated with immersive, highly visual, 3D environments. With the development of CAD software, graphics hardware acceleration, head mounted displays, database
gloves, and miniaturization have helped popularize this technology. Potential field of application of virtual are automobile industry, design, manufacturing, entertainment, game etc.

Different between Virtual reality and mixed reality:
Most of the time virtual reality and mixed (augmented) reality (MR) is used as synonyms
but there is different between these two technology. In virtual reality we see only the

virtual thing. But in mixed reality we can still see the real world and virtual word mixed
together and coexisting together. Hence mixed reality gives us actual information but doesn't replace the real world we are experiencing. Mixed reality can be considered as
advancement in virtual reality.

Advantages of VR/MR technology:
Although the technology is quite new and under R&D phase there are already a lot of interest and promising areas where it is being implemented and trusted. Game industry
and entertainment industry is considered as high customer density area for this product. Another most important area is manufacturing and automobile industry where this
technology can take place of rapid prototyping and product development. The term
being used is virtual prototyping. This shorten the product verifying and testing time, as 3D CAD model can directly being realized virtually before moving into any kind of actual development. Some of its advantages are listed below
● Increase productivity
● Increase display resolution● Accelerate the validation process
● Tools to add support for decision-making● Reduce the decision cycles with your customers
● Improve collaborative process

VR/MR Technology for Eureka Design
Why Eureka Need VR/MR Technology?
Customer satisfaction is very important aspect of Eureka business as we work closely
with customer in every steps by understanding their needs and during the whole process of machine design, development, verification and system installation. Hence a smart and quick mechanism to reduce the customer interaction while increasing the
increasing a satisfaction level and increasing our productivity is needed. VR/ MR technology can be a most suitable option for this.
● Using this technology we will be able to demonstrate and discuss about our design with customer in more realistic environment.
● Quickly and more efficient validation process in VR/MR with customer save time.
● Enables the user to validate the ergonomic factors for various human tasks, such
as the study of reach analysis or to see the collisions between the human body and the 3D model.
● Additional function like Virtual Assembly product enables the user to select and interactively move a part of the 3D model, to view collisions with the model and
record an animation that can be reloaded for further studies.
● Helps in gaining customer trust and add value to our product.
● Video record of the discussion process with customer in during validation process
of virtual prototype can serve as record for future reference.
● As a latest technology and trend in market, having this technology give Eureka
edge over its competitor.
Advantages for individual departments of Eureka:
After successful implementation of this project not only mechanical department but all
other departments like sales, system integration, assembly, drawing, QA etc can equallybenefit from it.

Plans:
Plan for this project is to start with some basic functionality and go on increasing and upgrading the system every year depending upon our productivity improvements and
customer satisfaction feedback. This is just a tentative plan so some of our long term plan can be implemented in beginning of the project as the technology is already there. This depend upon our budget allocation and further discussion with in company and
system provider.
1. Short term (1- 1.5 years)
Prepared by: Kiran Thapa 13
Initial study of technology, market research, information collection and supplier contact process is already been started for VR/ MR system.
Eureka basic requirements:1. Virtual visualization system of machine designed in Solid works in 1:1 ratio.
2. Head mounted display and tracking system for customer and operator so that both
of them can see and discuss about the product and navigate around it in real time.
3. Some interaction devices for pointing and selection specific components.
4. Shape and size of the visualized virtual product should be same as that of the real product so that customer can check for its ergonomics and user friendliness.
5. System to record the comments (video) of customer for future references.
6. Start with some basic functionality and go on increasing and upgrading the system every year depending upon our productivity improvements and customer
satisfaction.
With in the beginning of the year 2013 VR/MR system will be setup and run in
Eureka company. Below chart shows tentative short term plans for 2012-2013.
Prepared by: Kiran Thapa 14
2. Long term Plan ( 1.5 - 3 years)
After successful test and run of the VR/MR system for the first year there will be feedback and evaluation of the benefit of this system to Eureka. According to the
feedback and suggestion from inside company and our system provider system will be upgrade. Following can be some additional improvements
1. Fully equipped separate visualization room .
2. 1 full time operator with following responsibilities
- Operate and maintain the System.- Create backup of all the 3D model of old and new machine designed by eureka
- Design and upgrade machine designed by mechanical department with additional function to make it look realistic (SolidWorks Real View).
- Assist and help customer and external visitors and internal visitors in showing
Eureka machine during their visit to our company.- Suggest company about new development in this field.
3. Add more functionalities such as- virtual assembly
Prepared by: Kiran Thapa 15
- advanced projector system
- advanced tracking system- digital review (measurements, manipulate clipping planes, take snapshots,
select and hide parts or add annotations directly on the model.)- force feedback and haptic device- more realistic mixed reality options
- portable options for on-site virtual machine visualization
4. Integrate addon such as
- Machine configuration and e-commerce- modular design and modular process into VR system
- Simulation/ emulation of the machine operations
