Properties of Neem:

Since the time immemorial, neem has been associated with healing in the sub-continent

of India. A large number of medicinal, cosmetics, toiletries and pharmaceuticals are now

based on neem derivatives because of its unique medicinal properties.

Almost every part of neem tree is useful as follows:

Neem tree bark is bitter, astringent,

acrid and refrigerant. It is useful in

tiredness, cough, fever, loss of appetite,

worm infestation. It heals the wounds

and is also used in vomiting, skin

diseases. Most of the tooth paste are

coming from neem used an active

ingredient from bark

.

According to Ayurveda (an oldest

medicinal practice in India), Neem

leaves help in the treatment of neuro

muscular pains. Neem leaves are also

reported to remove toxins, purify blood

and prevent damage caused by free

radical in the body by neutralizing them.

Neem leaves are reported to be

beneficial in eye disorders and insect

bite poisons.

Neem fruits are bitter, purgative and

anthelmintic in nature. The most

important part of neem that can be

exploited for commercial returns is the

seed. The seed has the following

compositions: shell (55-60%), Kernel

(40 – 45%). Generally, neem seed

Kernel has the following important

chemical composition; azadirachtin

(0.35%) nimbidin (1.2 – 1.6%), nimbin

(0.1%), nimbinin (0.01%) vepinin

(0.15%), oil content on kernel basis (40-

50%), cake (65-70%). These important

phytochemicals, from the neem seed,

could be raw materials for

pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals,

cosmetic, soap industries. The

processing of the seed to obtain these

biochemicals is of utmost priority which

must be pursued.

Neem flowers are used in balancing of

the body heat and cough formation.

They are astringent, and non-toxic.

The Seeds from the Neem tree are

described as anthelminitic, antileprotic,

antipoisonous and bitter in taste.

The Neem oil isolated from the kernels

by cold press exraction is

antidermatonic, a powerful anthelmintic

and is bitter in taste. It has a wide

spectrum of action and is highly

medicinal in nature.

BRIEF NOTE ON NEEM SEED PROCESSING:

a. Cleaning:

Neem seed needs cleaning before processing. The cleaning involves removal of

stone and other foreign matter from the fruits/seeds. Specially, custom designed

machinery adopted in the factory for this process.

b. De-hulling:

De-hulling is the process of breaking the seeds without damaging the kernels. In this

process the seeds pass through rotating stones OR impact Blades designed specially,

which break the shell.

NEEM SEED UNDER PROCESSING

Furthermore, the kernels are isolated from the shells with the aid of air classifier. The

shell / chaff would be sent to fertilizer section for further process to add into fertilizer.

NEEM OIL EXTRACTION:

This is a process (cold process) of crushing the seed kernels of neem between shaft

and blades. Further, neem oil passes through filters and sent for packing. The oil, which

contains certain from 600 ppm to 2000 ppm of Azadirachtin. The neem oil reported as

pest control properties, and use this for plant protection purposes. The residual oil in the

cake is about 8% - 10% max. The Neem cake acquires a high value due to its manure

nature; it can be processed as organic fertilizer.
