The Castle Peak Beach Seafood Street was originally called Sam Shing Hui. In the 1950s, the bay was home to fishermen and became renowned as a centralised seafood area where fisherman berthed their boats and sampans.

Visitors can choose their favorite fresh seafood e.g. blue swimmer crabs, mantis shrimps, geoduck, sea snails and grouper fish and then they are delivered immediately to the door of your restaurant of choice.

Managed by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, the Tuen Mun Public Riding School is the largest public riding facility in Hong Kong. It occupies an area of 34 800 square metres and was commissioned on 4 January 1994.

Facilities in the school include an office, lecture rooms, a horse paddock and two pony paddocks, a stable which can accommodate 78 horses and ponies, changing rooms and a carpark. There is also a hacking trail, which is approximately 950 metres in length, meandering along the mountain side that allows riders to enjoy riding in the wild. The School provides a wide variety of activities, such as group training classes, horse hiring, taking a horse at livery, visits, riding competitions, etc. to promote the equestrian sport. Besides, it also organises a number of horse riding fun days each year for members of the public.

Section Ten, longest of all the MacLehose sections, heads west through Tai Lam Country Park. It follows the north bank of Tai Lam Chung Reservoir then leads along a catchwater towards the Trial’s destination – Tuen Mun.

Transport Access: There are several ways to return to the urban area:1. Exit through So Kwun Wat, San Tsuen, take minbus 43 at Pak Shek Hang to Tuen Mun Centre.2. Turn right at the exit of Picnic Site No. 7 along the catchwater, follow the vehicular access and walk for 30 minutes

to the Gold Coast.3. Follow the ladder of BBQ Site No. 4 to reach Kam Fai Garden. Minibus can take you to Tsuen Wan or Yuen Long.4. At F3 of the fitness trail, follow the staircase to Yin Fat Path where you can get minibus to Tsuen Wan or Yuen Long.

Making your apartment feel like a home is often a low priority in Hong

Kong. Many new arrivals don’t plan to live in Hong Kong for long, so

they limit their decorating budgets and take on a temporary attitude

having left a house full of furniture in their country of origin. “It is one

of the greatest mistakes we can make,” said Kate Davies, founder

of Authentiques, importers of classic 18th and 19th century antique

furniture from France, Belgium and UK. “I regret not collecting long-

term pieces earlier but I have changed that and now, when I come

home each day, I feel that our apartment is as much a home as the

one I left behind in Australia”.

Unless you own a Hong Kong home, the option to renovate is

limited by the landlord’s restrictions and your own disinterest in

enhancing someone else’s property. So most renters are faced with

vacuous boxes for rooms, plain white walls, veneered floors and

ugly metal window frames and light fittings. “The lack of character is

uninspiring. Creativity goes out the un-curtained window unless you

are experienced in interior design”. The lack of garden and trees seen

through a window soon have you longing for home. “It’s a slippery

slope,” says Kate, “You lose pride in your home, you eat-out instead

of entertaining and you can become a little unhinged,” said Kate.

“When I shipped a set of English 19th century dining chairs to Hong

Kong from Melbourne, because I couldn’t find any here, I was

shocked by the amount of life they breathed in to our apartment with

the beauty of the raw materials in different lights, the clever design,

the hand-crafted joinery and the contrast between the wood and

rush seating. We found the natural, living element our place lacked

which now gives the room substance. This led me on a discovery

towards my antique importing business, Authentiques. Now I bring

beautiful and simple pieces to Hong Kong which can transform

apartments in to havens, giving the owners the desire to spend more

down-time at home, even to entertain, which overall adds to their

sense of belonging in a big concrete jungle,” said Kate.

Illegal structures have “unfortunately” formed part of our daily lives.

A brief stroll on the street by an observant eye could well reveal

numerous illegal structures, most commonly including signboards,

enclosed balconies, glass panels, supporting structures for air-

conditioners. These structures not only could endanger the safety

of the general public, legal liability could also attach.

The Buildings Ordinance, Cap.123 (“BO”) contains no definition

of this term. However, s.14(1)(b) BO provides that “…no person

shall commence or carry out any building works or street works

without having first obtained from the Building Authority …his

consent in writing for the commencement of the building works

...”

Under s. 2 BO, the term “building works” carries a broad meaning

and “includes any kind of building construction, site formation

works, ground investigation in the scheduled areas, foundation

works, repairs, demolition, alteration, addition and every kind of

building operation, and includes drainage works.”

Simply speaking, any structural work may fall within the meaning

of “building works” and any alteration to it therefore requires the

prior approval from the Building Authority.

Illegal structures are also commonly known as "unauthorized

structures". A property owner seeking to demolish any part of

a reinforcement wall, or to replace the external wall with say

glass panels will have to seek prior approval from the Building

Authority before commencement of the works, or he will be at risk

of prosecution.

What are the legal consequences?

If an illegal structure is known to the Building

Authority, it may issue an order under s.24(1) BO

(“Building Order”) requiring the illegal structure to be

made good within a specified period of time (so as to end the

contravention of the BO).

Criminal prosecution may be instituted against any person who,

without reasonable excuse, fails to comply with the Building Order.

Upon conviction, he could be liable to up to:-

(a) a fine of $200000 and to imprisonment for 1 year; and

(b) a fine of $20000 for each day during which it is proved to the

satisfaction of the court that the offence has continued.

Although a term of imprisonment for non-compliance with a Building

Order is uncommon, there have still been recent cases in which the

Court has imposed an imprisonment term against a property owner

due to the gravity of the offence e.g. repeated non-compliance.

In short, do not take illegal structures lightly. The Court may have no

hesitation in imposing a term of imprisonment against a repeated

offender, or in our view, an owner of an illegal structure where the

Court sees fit to do so by reason of the gravity of the offence.

Therefore, if you have any doubt, we suggest that you consult your

legal advisor or an authorised person as soon as possible.
