Challenging the global status quo

Global economic power is returning towards

the East, where it has traditionally resided

for most of history, and away from the West,

where it has sat for the past 150 years:

• Uncertainty in the West regarding recovery

from the GFC

• Fear of terror attacks, both physical and

cyber

• Emerging middle class spending power

around the globe

This is creating opportunity in the agri-food

sector to produce food that fits particular

religious beliefs; that meets the needs of

evolving diets; and recognises the benefits of

new forms of protein.

While governments need food security,

they struggle to pay for it. Although every

government uses some form of subsidy to

achieve national food security, New Zealand

scores very well, with just one per cent

subsidisation compared to 18 per cent for the

OECD average.

One way New Zealand can take advantage

of this mega-trend is through production of

alternative proteins. A long-held view that

wealth is associated with a western diet is

likely to wane as the global status quo is

challenged, in which case alternative food

types from different cultures will gain greater

acceptance. An example is the potential role

of insects in our diet. Insects are an extremely

efficient converter of protein, generating a

low environmental footprint. With cultural

considerations dismantled, deriving a protein

powder from insects could become an

important part of New Zealand’s primary

production sector in future.

Future world citizens

Consumers of our products are changing:

• More and more live in large urban centres

• They are increasingly connected and

socially engaged via new technology

• Those aged over 65 are becoming more

prominent demographically

What primary producers should consider

around the needs and aspirations of future

world citizens is how consumers utilise

technology to make products local; how the

ageing population will seek food tailored to

its needs; and how food solutions can best fit

into urban lifestyles.

Examples of how to increase levels of

convenience for future world citizens

include developing products that are easy

to cut and eat, and therefore suit arthritis

sufferers; foods with lower energy content

for older consumers who do not require

excess calories; and fruit products that fit the

KPMG’s Agribusiness Agenda has defined five overarching trends that farmers and

others involved in New Zealand’s primary production need to be aware of as they

plan for the future.

lifestyles of commuters who may live in small

apartments without kitchen facilities and

spend two or more hours travelling to work

by train each day.

Empowering infrastructure

Many different types of new infrastructure to

empower individuals are in development:

• As expectations of healthcare rise, bills are

becoming unaffordable, shifting the focus

away from ‘cure’ and towards ‘prevention’

• Sustainable energy is slowly becoming

economically feasible

• Risks associated with anti-microbial

resistance loom as a greater threat

To benefit, food producers will need to

prepare for legal restrictions to be imposed

on food for social reasons; for the evolution

of synthetic food to accelerate; and for

greater pressure to come on decision-

makers to remove antibiotics from the

food supply chain.

As preventative healthcare becomes

increasingly important, primary producers

will have a major role to play developing

new food solutions for everything from sleep

deprivation, to heart disease, to dementia,

to cancer prevention and beyond. This will

be possible particularly using genetics and

nutraceuticals designed to provide new

health benefits or to emphasise the qualities

already recognised in certain food types.

A connected and converging digital world

Although the digital world is connecting and

converging rapidly, this process has much

further to go:

• By 2050, 50 billion devices will be

connected to the internet

• A wave of data already exists, which will

only grow

• The quest for artificial intelligence is

accelerating

Primary producers have much to gain,

particularly when they work out how to

leverage the ‘internet of things’ in precision

agriculture; how to use technology to create

new consumer experiences; and how to

develop or use the integration of data for

both production and marketing.

Change will come in the form of disruptive

technology and it will come quickly. Farmers

need to be ready in order to stay relevant.

A collaborative approach by New Zealand

primary producers would be the way to

create a broad data platform from which

to improve and enhance decision-making

capability. How to collect all that data into a

single meaningful point, from which good

decisions can be based, is the challenge.

If New Zealand can work that out, we will

benefit considerably.

Enabling indefinite sustainable living

As environmental concerns grow, sustainable

living becomes a more important objective:

• Addressing climate change and a

consequential shift to low carbon models

• Population growth placing stress on

natural resources

• Consumer concerns around food integrity

and provenance

• Malnourishment impacting 800 million

people, indicating a system failure

Primary producers and policy-makers will

need to seek solutions for a water-stressed

world; implement policy responses to reduce

food waste; integrate new technologies

to assure the authenticity of primary

production; and recognise that we are

capable of addressing food system failures.

Resource constraints around future world

dairy production suggest that New Zealand’s

current predominant model, based on

removing water from milk to produce

powder, could and should be modified.

We will realise a big opportunity if we can

find cost effective ways to give ‘as fresh’

milk a reasonable shelf life, and overcome

the logistics challenges of taking it to

international markets. By making the right

in-market investments to export milk in liquid

form, we would create the opportunity to

grow the value of our dairy product and

increase farmer returns.

How well are New Zealand primary

producers positioned to take advantage

of these trends?

As a country, we have a number of

advantages. Doing business here is easy

and highly transparent with low levels of

corruption; we have excellent participation

in education and enviable quality of life;

and we are geographically well located,

particularly relative to Asia.

As the global population grows and

emerging economies grow wealth, the

world will demand significantly more food,

fibre and timber to support the increasingly

individualised lifestyles that people will

aspire to. This is undeniably good news for

the medium to long-term, macro picture for

New Zealand’s primary sector. We have the

opportunity to offer the right products, in

the right place, at the right time. What we

need to do is work out how to realise this

potential by selecting and pursuing those

opportunities that will maximise the value we

are able to generate from what we produce.

What might hold New Zealand back as

these trends play out?

We do not have a strong system or culture

of innovation; we have no ‘international’ city;

although participation in education is high,

attainment is low; we are generally content

with low incomes relative to similar countries;

and we are more focused on churning

wealth than creating it.

Scale is an issue: New Zealand’s companies

can be squeezed because we are too small

to be relevant.

To focus on one shortcoming that we can

address, recent challenges in the dairy

sector underscore that New Zealand has

no exclusive right to sell its products at a

premium. Over the last 12 years, the value

of our primary sector exports has grown

by 4.5 per cent per annum, mainly through

increased volume, rather than adding value.

To properly address that, and ensure the

sector delivers $100 billion per annum by

2035 compared to the $35 billion it gives

us now, we need to make cultural changes,

turning our leading primary producers into

true high-value enterprises. Those enterprises

need to fully comprehend what it means to

add value. They need to understand each

step in the supply chain in detail, and to take

proactive measures to manage how products

flow through the chain to meet the needs of

the ultimate consumers of our products.

New Zealand Merino has done this well,

as has Zespri, and the wine industry does it

better than most. A significant opportunity

exists for apple growers around cider. While

our first grade apples are fine and a well-

respected export, we could gain considerably

more value from lower grade apples if they

were turned into craft ciders, which is one

of the fast-growing beverage categories

worldwide, and which New Zealand

definitely has the capability to do extremely

well in.

As a sector, we lack a big vision. This is a

significant concern, particularly as our future

role in the global food system is likely to

evolve rapidly, driven by changes in

demand and supply. 17

We need to think deeply about how the

primary sector must be positioned to

compete and win in the markets of the

future, particularly with concerns over

whether the industry is actually realising

enough value from our current production.

We must address the fears that wider New

Zealand has about the sector’s environmental

impact; animal welfare practices; and foreign

ownership of assets. We also need to fully

meet the challenges of supporting vibrant

rural communities.

Where do you see New Zealand’s primary

production sector generating export

wealth in 20 years’ time?

If we are to retain and enhance our current

position and the standard of living that

we enjoy, by 2035, I expect New Zealand’s

exports will have diversified to include

production of exponentially more natural

dairy liquids, as opposed to milk powder;

and a range of bio-products from timber, as

opposed to raw logs.

We will have moved confidently to become

a high producer of medicinal plants. Ten

years ago, the thought of growing marijuana

as a legitimate business would never have

been conceived of; now it could have a big

future. As the United States has started to

decriminalise, medical marijuana is becoming

an important new category. Likewise,

Tasmania has quickly become the world’s

most important producer of medical grade

morphine. We can identify and exploit similar

niches in New Zealand.

We also need to make the most of our

natural advantages to exploit some of the

many climate-related opportunities that

will become more apparent over the next

two decades. Analysis suggests there are

significant stretches of under-developed

Maori land scattered across the northern

half of the North Island. These will become

warmer and wetter as the climate changes,

which we should think about when

developing that land. Traditionally used for

sheep and beef, it may become suited to

higher value horticultural use.

Also, by 2035, we will have built on our

current reputation as a leading producer

of natural beef and veal, kiwifruit, lamb and

mutton, natural dairy ingredients, other food

products, wine, aquaculture and other animal

co-products, each of which will still make a

considerable contribution to our national

export revenue.

Some other innovative export developments

will have started to make a positive impact

on our national balance sheet, including

synthetic dairy products, poultry and egg

products, synthetic red meat, pork, insect

protein powders, cider, sheep and goat milk,

and goat meat.

If you were to make three

recommendations to farmers about how

best to position themselves for the future,

what would those recommendations be?

First, farmers need to be very clear about

how their products are being used in the

market. They need to fully understand and

constantly re-evaluate what consumers

expect of them and what they are producing.

Know your customers.

Second, they need to recognise that they are

an important part of a value chain. They need

to be aware of and engaged with whoever

represents them in that value chain, to ensure

that as much as possible of the value they

produce returns to the farmers themselves.

Know and trust your partners.

Third, they need to be open and aware

of rapidly developing technology, and be

prepared to adopt it, particularly when it has

the potential to disrupt either their methods

of production or any of the assumptions that

underlie what they do and how they deliver

product to the end-consumer. Make sure you

have the best possible technology.

And what advice would you give to

others involved in New Zealand’s primary

production sector, including government,

to ensure that we maximise our

performance in the future?

Decision-makers need to be open-minded

and welcome collaborative foreign

investment, recognising the benefits that can

come into our sector. Working collaboratively

with such investors is the key. We need to

find ways we can benefit and work with

international partners.

We need to ensure that we are aware of the

big picture for long-term innovation. Inter-

generational investment by farmers in the

1960s and 70s paved the way for more recent

gains by our dairy sector. A similar long-term

horizon needs to be in mind when decisions

are made around our environmental

footprint and sustainability.

Finally, we need to remember that we are

a food-producing industry focusing on

product that people are going to eat. We

need to understand our consumers. We are

not selling to an ‘average’ person; an average

person does not exist. To be able to target

higher value customers we need to spend

time and effort getting to know them.

Opportunities ahead of the primary

production sector are immense. Whether or

not we capture those is within the control of

farmers themselves. They are capable, they

just need to proceed smartly, with a well-

constructed plan. Farmers have the ability

to influence what our supply chain partners

do. All of this is in the hands of primary

producers. Our future is very exciting.

Passion for irrigation still runs deepDave Finlay describes himself simply as an “irrigation man.” Ingrained in his memory

is his time farming a dryland property at Windsor in North Otago, battling drought

and having to sell his sheep in drought sales. It was, he recalls, ‘nightmarish stuff.’

Those challenging times resulted in him

later becoming a driving force behind

irrigation development in North Otago.

At 78, Mr Finlay shows no signs of slowing

down, as he continues working as a rural

sales consultant for PGG Wrightson Real

Estate in Oamaru.

But he is standing down this month as

a director of the Lower Waitaki Irrigation

Company, after a 41-year involvement.

Chairman Chris Dennison, who is also

standing down at the annual meeting

this month, said Mr Finlay’s passion for

irrigation ran very deep.

As a director, he was full of new ideas and

dynamic ways of dealing with problems

and his input would be missed.

His contribution had also been selfless.

“This isn’t about Dave Finlay, it’s about

a community,” Mr Dennison said.

Mr Finlay grew up on a farm at Windsor,

one of 11 children, and started shearing

in 1954, throughout North Otago and into

the finewool-growing areas of the Upper

Waitaki and Mackenzie.

He then attended Lincoln College, having

done well at St Kevin’s College. He chose

to do an intensive agriculture course,

which meant completing a two year

diploma in one year.

Keen for a change in “thinking patterns,”he

found it hard to explain to his mates why

he was taking on tertiary study. But he

wanted a change and was interested to see

what he could learn.

The course included animal health, stock

management, feed, nutrition, production

and farm management and he returned

to North Otago enthusiastic about farming.

A talented rugby player, he also played

“90-something” games for North Otago,

captaining the team in 1971 and later

Pukekohe finally sold Mako Point, a 56

hectare coastal farm property at Big Bay near

the entrance to Manukau Harbour, in late

autumn, after it was originally listed for sale

in 2000, with no takers since. He said, in the

end, market demand caught up with the

Awhitu property.

“In rural real estate, sometimes it is a

significant challenge to find the right

purchaser. Other salespeople have tried

to sell this farm over the years, without

success. We listed it in late 2013. It is a

perfectly good rural property, previously set

up as a 110 cow dairy farm. Big Bay is famous

for its clear waters, safe swimming and good

fishing and, with 1.6 kilometres of white

sand shoreline, Mako Point has potential for

residential and lifestyle subdivision. A little

closer to Auckland CBD or in Clevedon, it

would have sold in no time. In this instance

though, it took a little longer for the market

to develop an appreciation of the property’s

quality,” he said.

Johnny McDonald bought Mako Point in

June 1985. He and wife, Vanessa brought

Manukau Harbour property finally sells after more than 15 years on the market

up their three sons and one daughter,

now aged between 17 and 27, on the farm.

Vanessa says it provided an ideal background

for their childhood.

“It has been a great lifestyle to bring up

a young family. Their playground was the

beach. The whole of the Awhitu Peninsula, in

general, is a wonderful community,” she says.

They first tried to sell in 2000.

“We tested the market, offering the farm for

sale by auction. While there were bids, none

met our expectations. We tried again two

years later, selling by a tender process and,

once again, nobody offered what we

were after.

A South Auckland coastal property may have set an unusual real estate record,

eventually selling more than 15 years after first going on the market.
