JAZZ NEW RELEASE - 2/9/2013

Webster Wraight Ensemble

No Lucky Days

MISO25CD 5060166190385 CD MISO RECORDS £7.99 JAZZ The Webster Wraight Ensemble is an unexpected and exciting project by deep house maestro Charles Webster and pianist and orchestral arranger Peter Wraight, the man behind the arrangements of the Matthew Herbert Big Band. Together they have created a storming jazz big band album with electronic influences and vocal contributions from Emilie Chick and Detroit’s Paul Randolph (Jazzanova/Innerzone Orchestra). From the bleak yet beautiful images of “The Ruins of Britain” to the wildfire, Latin tinged glory of album closer “Nature and Light”, ‘No Lucky Days’ has the dynamics and flow of an old fashioned LP. It is however, much more than a pastiche of old big band values and traditions and manages to sidestep the well trodden clichés and easy answers of the genre both musically and lyrically. The album features a full big band alongside; classical harp, piano and electronics, and a choir. The list of players reads like a who’s who of top UK musicians, including saxophonist Dave O’Higgins and classical harpist Brian Wilson. The songs were recorded in London, Nimes, Detroit and Nottingham by Charles and Peter using an SSL desk with vintage Coles and Neumann mics and was produced and mixed by Charles on a vintage Neve desk and in his own studio. They blend the subtle programming and electronics seamlessly with the acoustic instrumentation and vocals. Tracks: A World of Fire / The Ruins of Britain / Lost No More / When All Is Calm / Hard to Say / Vulture / Storm Clouds / Rise / Unexpected News / Nature and Light Received airplay on BBC Radio 2 (Jamie Cullum), BBC 6 Music (Gilles Peterson) + Michael Ruetten’s Soulsearching (Motion FM) Reviews confirmed in The Guardian, MOJO, BBC Music Magazine + Jazzwise Airplay confirmed on Jazz FM (Mike Chadwick)

JAZZ NEW RELEASE - 9/9/2013

Carla Bley, Andy Sheppard & Steve Swallow

Trios

3724551 602537245512 CD ECM £9.49 JAZZ Trios is one of the outstanding jazz albums of the season and marks the first time that a Carla Bley album has appeared on ECM itself (rather than the ECM-distributed WATT label, which has been her primary platform for 40 years). Carla Bley, Andy Sheppard and Steve Swallow revisit classic Bley compositions in an exceptional album recorded in Lugano in 2012 by Manfred Eicher. Included on Trios are spirited new versions of “Utviklingssang” and “Vashkar”, as well as the suites “Les Trois Lagons”, “Wildlife” and “The Girl Who Cried Champagne”. Carla’s robust tunes are vividly conveyed, all members solo compellingly, and the trio has never sounded better. “Utviklingssang” (“Development Song”), penned initially for a large band, made its first appearance on Social Studies (1981), and was reprised for her Duets album with Steve Swallow (1988) and for 2000’s 4x4. “Vashkar”, one of Carla’s most popular songs, is an early 1960s piece that has been recorded by Paul Bley, Tony Williams, Gary Burton, Bobby Naughton and Cindy Blackman amongst others. Commissioned by the Grenoble Jazz Festival in 1996, “Les Trois Lagons”, based on cutouts by Henri Matisse, was recorded on 4x4. “Wildlife” was previously heard on 1985’s Night-Glo, while “The Girl Who Cried Champagne” has been recorded twice by Carla, first on Sextet, and then in an extended version on the live big band session from the Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen, Fleur Carnivore. Personnel: Carla Bley (piano), Andy Sheppard (tenor and soprano saxophones), Steve Swallow (bass) Tracks: 1. Utviklingssang 2. Vashkar 3. Les Trois Lagons (d'apres Henri Matisse) 4. Wildlife 5. The Girl Who Cried Champagne London Jazz Festival concert: 24 November, Wigmore Hall Promotion includes advertising in Jazzwise. Dizzy Gillespie Quintet & Hans Koller New Jazz Stars

March 9, 1953 NDR Studio Hamburg

N13012 4017425130126 CD MOOSICUS RECORDS £8.49 JAZZ German broadcaster NDR has recorded the stars of international jazz since the early 1950’s and taken from this archive is a superb series of re-mastered CDs featuring previously unreleased material. The first album in this series features two groups: one led by an American of real stature - trumpeter and bebop innovator Dizzy Gillespie - and the other by saxophonist Hans Koller, then at the helm of the most important modern jazz quintet in the German-speaking world. All of the music was recorded at NDR’s studios on March 9th 1953 and the five tracks featuring Gillespie see him fronting his tightly knit working band of the time in a melodic programme made up of three standards and two Latin pieces. Vienna-born Koller was at that time influenced by Lennie Tristano and those in his orbit. Joining him on four pieces from the “Great American Songbook” were trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff and pianist Jutta Hipp, who would soon relocate to the United States and record for Blue Note. Dizzy Gillespie Quintet: Dizzy Gillespie (trumpet), Bill Graham (baritone saxophone), Wade Legge (piano), Lou Hackney (bass), Al Jones (drums) Hans Koller New Jazz Stars: Hans Koller (tenor saxophone), Albert Mangelsdorff (trombone), Jutta Hipp (piano), Shorty Roeder (bass), Karl Sanner (drums) Tracks: Dizzy Gillespie Quintet: They Can't Take That Away From Me / Alone Together / Manteca / Tin Tin Deo / I Can't Get Started / Hans Koller New Jazz Stars: The Way You Look Tonight / Indian Summer / You Go to My Head / All the Things You Are

COMETCD056 3521383423059 CD COMET RECORDS £6.65 WORLD ‘Denfila’ is the second album by Donso, a French/Malian band of five, who skilfully bring together traditional Malian music and electronica to create a unique fusion of music. JAZZ NEW RELEASE - 12/8/2013

Mike Gibbs Mike Gibbs + Twelve Play Gil Evans

WR4639 639713711943 CD WHIRLWIND RECORDINGS £7.99 JAZZ Mike Gibbs, one of the most important living composers and arrangers working in the jazz and improvised music idiom, pays tribute to the legendary composer/arranger Gil Evans with a twelve-piece ensemble featuring leading musicians from the UK jazz scene, including Julian Siegel and Finn Peters. To mark Evans’s 100th anniversary in 2012 Gibbs adapted the six original arrangements of Gil Evans material on this CD. There’s also a helping of Gibbs originals and works by some of his favourite composers including Carla Bley and Ornette Coleman. The group recorded all the material on the album in just one day and it features an eclectic mix of some of the most important improvisers living in the UK, with each track featuring at least one soloist from the ensemble. Mike Gibbs has worked with legendary artists including Pat Metheny, John McLaughlin, Joni Mitchell, Whitney Houston, John Schofield and Peter Gabriel in a career that spans four decades. The 76 year old Gibbs according to The Guardian, “still sparks subtly harmonized thrills from a jazz orchestra in ways that few can - much as he did in the 1960s when he first showed the scene just what his unique synthesis of Gil Evans, Charles Ives, Olivier Messiaen and country-rock could sound like.” Personnel: Mike Gibbs (conductor, arranger, composer), Hans Koller (piano), Julian Siegel (tenor and soprano saxophones, bass clarinet), Finn Peters (alto saxophone, flutes), Lluis Mather (tenor saxophone, clarinets), Percy Pursglove (trumpet), Robbie Robson, Joe Aukland (trumpet), Jim Rattigan (French horn), Mark Nightingale (trombone), Sarah Williams (bass trombone, tuba), Michael Janisch (double bass), Jeff Williams (drums) “Think of the ingredients you look for in a great jazz record - inspired, exploratory improv, the complete reinvention of standards, ear-catching arrangements, sonorities you've never heard before - and this new big band recording from Mike Gibbs delivers them all. By the bucketload.” - The Arts Desk.com Tracks: 1. Bilbao Song 2. Las Vegas Tango 3. Ida Lupino 4. Feelings & Things 5. Sister Sadie 6. Spring is Here 7. Ramblin' 8. St. Louis Blues 9. CLASSICAL NEW RELEASE - 9/9/2013

Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic & Michael Schonwandt

Schumann: Symphonic Works

CC72553 608917255324 HYBRID SACD2 CHALLENGE CLASSICS £12.99 CLASSICAL This double hybrid SACD set from the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic and its chief conductor Michael Schønwandt brings together all four of Robert Schumann’s symphonies. It also includes two lesser known works, the incomplete early Symphony in G Minor, WoO 29 ‘Zwickau’, and an arrangement by Hans de Vlieger of the last of the Six Fugues on the name BACH, Op. 60, originally written for the pedal piano.

The numbering of the symphonies produces a degree of confusion in that the Symphony in D minor from 1841 was fundamentally revised by Schumann in 1851 and was then given number 4. The recording on this CD is a reconstruction of the original version and is in fact Schumann’s ‘Second’. Danish conductor Michael Schønwandt was Music Director of the Royal Orchestra and the Royal Opera in Copenhagen from 2000-2011, and associated with the company since 1979. In September 2010 he took up the position of Chief Conductor of the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also held posts as Chief Conductor of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra (1992-1998), Principal Guest Conductor of the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra (1987-2000), and Principal Guest Conductor of the Royal Flanders Philharmonic Orchestra. It features chorale settings, arias, ciacconas, concertos, and a cantata. They include in particular chorale settings, concertos on biblical texts, arias on contemporary sacred poetry, dialogues, and composite forms such as concertos, arias, and cantatas. Pre-eminent among these were settings based on traditional songs from the church hymnal known as chorales. Henning Kraggerud

Munch Suite (Limited Edition, includes 15 Munch reproductions)

PSC1322 7033662013227 CD SIMAX £14.00 CLASSICAL Munch Suite is a unique recording from acclaimed violinist Henning Kraggerud being released to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of the painter Edvard Munch. It features 15 new solo pieces, every one directly inspired by a specific painting by the great Norwegian artist. Each piece has been written by a different composer, in this case some important figures on the international contemporary music scene including Aaron Jay Kernis, Alissa Firsova and Laurent Petitgirard. The CD is presented in a de-luxe edition box that includes reproductions of each painting depicted in the suite. The idea to let contemporary composers interpret Edvard Munch’s iconic artworks came from the director of the Vestfold International Festival. Violinist Henning Kraggerud immediately saw the artistic potential of the project and the result is a solo suite that reflects the unique position of Munch’s work as musical inspiration. The Munch Suite features premiere recordings of 15 pieces specially written by leading contemporary composers including Aaron Jay Kernis, Naji Hakim, Olav Anton Thommessen and Rolf Martinsson. The list includes English composer Peter Seabourne and the British-Russian composer Alissa Firsova, daughter of Elena Firsova. The work was first heard during the exhibition ‘Love’s Beach’ in 2010 at the Haugar Art Museum near the Åsgårdstrand shores, the place where Munch found motifs for many of his paintings. A small gallery able to accommodate an audience of only 60, each piece was performed in front of ‘its own’ painting. In connection with the release of the Munch Suite on CD, Kraggerud has developed an exclusive concert performance in which images of the paintings are projected. Personnel: Henning Kraggerud (violin) Tracks: 1. Fabian Müller: Munch’s Traum(a) (The Woman) 2. Aaron Jay Kernis: A Dance of Life (The Dance of Life) 3. Peter Seabourne: Meeting (The Meeting) 4. Ines Maidre

Revived in Tango - Guy Bovet, Domenico Scarlatti, Frescobaldi etc.

PPC9066 7033662090662 CD SIMAX £8.49 CLASSICAL Guy Bovet’s organ work ‘Tangos Ecclesiasticos’ was written in 2000. Six of its twelve sections are based around works by composers from the past including Domenico Scarlatti, Frescobaldi, Johann Kerll, J S Bach, Nicolas de Grigny, and Pablo Bruna. On the CD Revived in Tango these are paired with their early musical models. The artist is the Estonian Ines Maidre who performs the set on the Binvignant-Houdtappel organ at Hasselt Cathedral. The idea of this recording is to pair French contemporary composer Guy Bovet’s Tangos Ecclesiasticos with their related earlier musical models in order to show the source of their inspiration and how much the tango transformation reveals or changes the original. The order of the tangos on the CD is different from the original due to the artistic goals of the programme. Of the 12 Tangos Ecclesiasticos, six are presented on this album together with six works from early French (Nicolas de Grigny), Italian (Girolamo Frescobaldi, Domenico Scarlatti), Spanish (Pablo Bruna), and German (Johann Kaspar Kerll, Johann Sebastian Bach) organ literature. A graduate of the Estonian Academy of Music, Tallinn, Ines Maidre holds soloist diplomas for both piano and organ with the highest distinctions. As a harpsichord player she frequently performs together with her early music ensemble Musica Celines. Her collaboration with various soloists and ensembles has resulted in programmes combining organ with Gregorian chant, dance, percussion, violin, harp, trumpet, trombone and synthesizer. Astrid Varnay The Bayreuth Heroine

600053 4053796000538 CD10 DOCUMENTS £8.49 CLASSICAL One of the most famous dramatic sopranos of her day, Astrid Varnay was highly regarded and championed by all the great conductors of the time. The recordings on this 10-CD collection all come from the 1950s and present her at the peak of her powers. They include some of her greatest performances in the operas of Wagner, Verdi, Richard Strauss, and Beethoven. Astrid Varnay began her European career at Bayreuth in 1951. Although still only 30, there had already been ten successful years in the USA. Her triumphant debut took place on the stage of the New York Metropolitan Opera. The young singer was preparing her first stage role, Elsa in ‘Lohengrin’ when Erich Leinsdorf engaged her to take the place of Lotte Lehmann, who through illness had cancelled her appearance as Sieglinde in a ‘Walküre’ performance on 6 December 1941. A few days later, for the second performance, Helen Traubel (Brünnhilde) was indisposed and Astrid Varnay took on this formidable role at short notice. This double debut is still today a unique chapter in the history of the ‘Met’. This comprehensive anthology features excerpts from Die Walküre, Siegfried, Götterdämmerung, Der Fliegende Holländer, Lohengrin, Tannhäuser, Parsifal, Tristan und Isolde, Electra, Salome, Der Rosenkavalier, Fidelio, Macbeth, Aida, Il Trovatore, Don Carlos, A Masked Ball, The Force of Destiny, La Gioconda, Thaïs, Cavalleria Rusticana and other operas. Personnel: Astrid Varney (soprano), Bayreuth Festival Orchestra, Herbert von Karajan, Eugen Jochum (conductor), Orchestra of the New York Met., Fritz Stiedry, Rudolf Kempe (conductor), Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Leopold Ludwig (conductor), Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra and Choir, Richard Kraus (conductor) and others
