Fear Appeal
• Attempts to frighten people into agreeing
Rumor
• A story of doubtful truth
Innuendo• A subtle, derogatory remark or image
Slogan
• A short, memorable phrase
Repetition• The normalization and acceptance of an
idea by showing it over and over.• Example:
– The repetition of Saddam Hussein’s name in conjunction with the 9/11 attacks made 41% of poll-takers in 2007 believe he was in fact responsible.
Bandwagon• Persuasive technique
that gets everyone to join in
• Similar to peer pressure
Doublespeak/Euphemism• Doublespeak:
unclear language (see right)• Euphemism:
a milder term used for a negative idea– “wardrobe malfunction”– “vertically challenged”
