1.1 ORIGINAL TASK WITH TEACHER’S NOTES

x

Executive summary

This survey, about the risks youngsters take these days, gives a clear insight in how much risks they actually take. The chosen risks are financial risks, risks concerning smoking cigarettes and the risks of drinking alcohol. Now, after everybody filled in the survey we came across a few sur-prises and jaw dropping statistics, but in general, the pupils don't take a lot of risks.

Introduction

This report will look at:

● our expectations

● financial risks

● risks concering smoking

● alcohol consumption in our class

Findings

When we were first searching for questions to make a survey about risk, we thought that the people in our class would be risk-takers. We are young students, who like to party and drink alco-hol. When reading the results of the survey, we saw that our thoughts were not right. The students in our class are actually very carefully.

We have chosen three questions that surprised us the most. The first question was about the fact if the bank account of the students go into the red. We thought that some people had this problem but in fact, everybody answered ‘no’. This means that the students have a good control of their money and that their bank account is very healthy.

The second question is about smoking. More than the half of the class does not smoke, this is very surprising because students these days smoke a lot. But 60% of our class does not smoke. The other 40% exists of people who smoke about 10 cigarettes a day. This is again very good, because smoking is bad for your health and our class is very careful.

The last question that we have chosen is about drinking alcohol. Students are well known for drink-ing alcohol and partying and this question is a proof of that. Only 15% of the students does not drink, this is a very small part of the class. The rest of the class drinks 1 to 4 days in a week, this is not so good because alcohol is bad for your health but the students are also aware of the con-sequences of alcohol.

Conclusion

We can conclude that the students of our class don’t take risks too often, only when it’s needed. They keep their bank accounts above zero, they are riskless when going out, they use contracept-ives when having sex with a stranger and they try to keep out of danger with drugs.

1.2 OWN REVISED TASK

Executive summary

This survey, about the risks that our classmates take these days, gives a clear insight in how much risks they actually take. The chosen risks are about finance, smoking cigarettes and drinking alco-hol. Now, after our classmates filled in the survey we came to conclusion that our fellow students are actually very careful, they have good control over their money, there are not so much students who smoke but 85% of the class does drink once a week.

Introduction

This report will look at:

● our expectations

● financial risks

● risks about smoking

● alcohol consumption in our class

Findings

When we were first brainstorming about questions to make a survey about risk, we thought that the people in our class would be risk-takers. We are young students, who like to party and drink alco-hol. When reading the results of the survey, we saw that our thoughts were not right. The students in our class are actually very careful.

We have chosen three conclusions of questions who have surprised us the most. The first question was about the fact that if the bank account of the students go into the red. We thought that some people had this problem but in fact, everybody answered ‘no’. This means that the students have a good control over their money and that they are very responsible when it comes to money.

The second question was about smoking. More than the half of the class does not smoke, this is very surprising because we expected the students to smoke a lot. 60% of our class does not smoke. This is again very good, because smoking is bad for your health and our class is very care-ful.

Our last conclusion comes from a question about drinking alcohol. Students are well known for drinking alcohol and partying. Only 15% of the students do not drink, this is a very small part of the class. The rest of the class drinks between 1 to 4 days in a week, this is not so good because alco-hol is bad for your health but the students are also aware of the consequences of alcohol.

Conclusion

We can conclude that the students of our class don’t take risks too often. They keep their bank accounts in the black, they don’t take much risks when going out, they use contraceptives when having sex with a stranger and they try to be careful with drugs.

Changing questions for whole Artevelde

I would actually don’t change the questions for the simple reason that I actually want to know if there are differences between students who for example study for nurse and people who study Marketing. And I also think that there would be a certain difference in risk taking because people who study for a nurse are among me less risk-takers than people who study Marketing.

4 EFFORTS TO IMPROVE ENGLISH

4.1 3 TED PRESENTATIONS

4.1.1 Henk Schiffmacher

I was searching on YouTube for TEDpresentations and I have actually searched a long time because most of the presentations seemed very boring. And then I saw this guy, Henk Schiffmacher, who talked about tat-toos. I have always been interested in tattoos, because for me it’s a sort of art. I am not talking about ALL the tattoos but there is a part of the tattoocommunity who has nice tattoos.

Henk Schiffmacher has 115 tattoos himself, he talks about the whole meaning of tattoos. For example, tat-toos can be a help for identification of dead people. You can also get tattoos to make something immortal. For example, the name of your wife. Henk tells this too, that every tattoo that he has, has his own story. And I think that’s a nice thing, that you can remember something or someone by just looking at a part of your body.

4.1.2 How to Control Someone Else's Arm with Your Brain | Greg Gage

This TED-presentation was about science, more specifically neuroscience. It seems boring, I know, but it is not. This was one of the most interesting videos that I have watched in a long time. Greg Gage came here to tell us that neuroscience is something very complicated and that people do not get a lot of information about neuroscience in middle school. That is because that the machines to control the brain and learn about the brain are so complicated and expensive.

Greg Gage has talked about this with labmate and they have decided to make these machines simple and affortable for everyone. He has brought one of those machines to this TED talk to show how things work with the brain. He has asked two volunteers to come up on stage to show them very interesting things like just by connecting the two arms, he has made it possible that the one arm can control the other person’s arm. This TED talk was very interesting and now I want to know more about neuroscience.

4.1.3 Apollo Robbins: The art of misdirection

I have always been interested by illusions, magic, mindgames, etc. That is why I have chosen this TED-talk. This man talks about controlling the brain of someone else, just by distracting them. For example, by put-ting the attention somewhere, you can do anything you want somewhere else. In this video, Apollo Robbins has for example put the attention on a person’s hand, just to put a pokerchip on the same person’s shoulder but he did not even notice because his attention went to his hand, several times.

I like this sort of presentations, very funny, but also very informative. For example, he has just changed his shirt and removed his tie without anyone noticing it and that is something very extraordinary.

4.2 BLOGGER FOR 5 WEEKS (REPORT ABOUT HIS ACTIVITIES, INTERESTS, HOBBIES, .. 1PAGE)

For this blog task, I actually did not have to search a lot. During the exams of january 2016, I had read a post on Facebook about Jeremy Scott Foster, the Travel Freak. So I decided to follow this person for 5 weeks. It was not so simple because he actually posted once a month so I have followed him for 4 months from janu-ary till april. Jeremy is 30 years old and has quit his job in the IT sector in 2010 to start travelling and now six years later, he is still travelling. He just wants to live his own life according to his own choices. He is very freeminded, he has developed his own lifestyle with his own creativity and freedom and works now as a blogger, photographer and bartender to earn his money to travel.

It looks all very nice, very adventurous but I don’t think that everybody can do this. You have to give up your job and you have to be able to live in different places, so you’re one month in Australia, the other month you’re in Thailand so it’s very differentiate. For example me, I don’t think that I would be able to do this because I like to travel too, but not for such a long time. So I can conclude that Jeremy is a life enjoyer, a travel freak, adventurous person and takes every opportunity that he can.

I started with the post on January 19 2016. The blog was called ’30 things to do in 30 countries before you’re 30’. Jeremy has written a blog for his 30th birthday, by telling people 30 things to do before you turn 30. While reading this blog, I actually realised what kind of boring life that I have been living till now, when I compare it to Jeremy’s life. Till his 30th birthday, he has Scuba dived, jumped out of an airplane, hiked a glacier, bungeejumped, hitch-hiked through a country, flew an airpane himself, spent a week offline etc. So when you read about all of his life experiences, you can conclude that he is really adventurous, does everything that comes up to his mind, does not think a lot and actually does not plan at all.

The second blog was called ’21 spots in Brussels that will make your mouth water’. So the Travel Freak was in Brussels. He is also a life enjoyer so he has travelled all through Brussels to find the best of everything. He tells about waffles, the sort of waffles and where you can find the best waffles to eat. After that, he talks about the chocolate. Again, he looks every place up to find the best chocolate. At last, he talks about the beer and the frites of Brussels. I have even visited one of the bars that he has written about and he was right, it was actually very pleasant. So we can conclude that he is a life enjoyer, he will pay a couple of euros or dollars more to get better food and enjoy it more.

The third blog was about facing your fears. Jeremy talked in this blog about his adventures in Thailand and the seven things that you should definitely do when you visit Thailand. But the actual thing in this blog is to face your fears and that you have to do the things that scare you. Even I was convinced by Jeremy’s adven-tures, I want to visit Thailand and do that Deep water soloing because it seems so nice and adventurous. The rest of the blog was actually a little bit like the first blog, things that were recommended by Jeremy.

The last blog that I had the chance to read was ‘How to Save Up Money for Travel: You Don’t Need to Stop Drinking $5 Lattes’. When first reading the title, I thought that he was going to give recommendation how you can save as much as money in the fastest time possible but that was not correct. He just tries to show if how you can put away a higher-than-average amount and save up money for travel every month. He has given a lot of interesting tips but there is just one that I have in my mind and that I will definitely use start-ing now and that is that you should not cut costs on things that you really like, you should do it otherwise and think about things you don’t like but still have costs for.

I really enjoyed reading these blogs, it was actually the first time that I have followed a blogger I think and I’m happy that I have chosen Jeremy Scott Foster. Because his style of writing is very nice, you just want to keep reading and in that time, you also learn things and that’s very important.

4.3 2 ORIGINAL CREATIVE ENGLISH ACTIVITIES OF OWN

4.3.1 Watching TV without subtitles

I am someone who wants to understand everything when he watches something. For example, when I watch TV-series or movies, I want to understand anything because I always think that I will not understand the movie when I don’t understand a sentence. That is why I always want to watch english movies or TV-series with subtitles.

In january 2016, I was searching for a new TV-serie to watch. After a long searching time, I have found one. The TV-serie is called Suits. A very interesting serie about lawyers. So I decided to watch this one without subtitles and in the beginning it was very hard. Because there were law terms used in this serie that I com-pletely did not understand so I had to search them up on the internet.

Now, I am watching season 4 and I almost understand anything. Every episode, there are some terms that I don’t understand but then I just look it up on the internet and I can watch further. So watching TV-shows without subtitles is a very good idea, it has helped me a lot.

4.3.2 Talking English with my girlfriend

So this one looks interesting but difficult, I admit. Me and my girlfriend like to travel a lot. So our last trip was to Budapest in Hungary in february 2016. I am the person actually who has to do the talking when we go somewhere that we can express ourselves in English because my English is better than hers. So I had something in mind and that was to talk English also to eachother when we were in Budapest.

We did this, and in the beginning it is actually funny and abnormal, but after a particular time, you get used to it and it is very good actually because you can talk the whole time to eachother. You also can correct eachother when the other one makes a mistake. Now we have also decided to do this more and more and we are planning to go on a trip to New York, first of all because it is a city of dreams but also to improve our English a little bit. I strongly recommend to talk English to your girlfriend or just to your friends because it helps you a lot.

5 FINAL REPORT: HAS ENGLISH IMPROVED, HAVE I ACHIEVED WHAT I WANTED, COMPARE WITH PROGRESS IN FIRST SEMESTER)

Has my English improved? Definitely! At first, I always thought that my English was already very good, be-cause I like to talk a lot and because I had not so much difficulties while talking English but it is definitely not correct. There are so many things that I have learned. It is not only because of the English courses, but also because of the other courses that are given in English for example E-Marketing and Strategic market-ing. These courses are also in English and we also have had tasks we had to make in English.

But the main reason that I think my English has improved is because we have to talk English all the time in the class and that’s the best way to learn English. You have to improvise what you have to say because the presentations that you have to do in front of the class are most of the time a mix between learning by heart, improvisation and a little bit of luck. The Pecha Kucha presentation, Persuading your audience and other tasks have also helped me to improve because you are so busy by making these tasks that you start thinking in English and that’s something very good I think.

Now it is up to ourselves to maintain this level of English by staying busy in English because a language is something very abnormal. If you don’t maintain it by using it, after a couple of months you lose a part of it. So the big trick actually is that you have to train it, you have to talk English, listen to English music, watch English TV-shows and so on. There are so many things that can improve your English, you just have to want it, that’s all.

And when I have to make a comparison with the first semester, the second semester was more fun. Be-cause the first semester, the main focus were the tasks that we have to prepare for the next lesson, but the second semester was not like that. We had the OCT, the Pecha Kucha, following a blogger and so on, and I liked that more than just making some exercices in our books.

I would also like to thank our lector Mrs. Verheyden for the nice courses because I actually liked the courses a lot and I have never had the intention of being bored. The only change that I would make are the tasks in the first semester, I would mix the first semester and the second semester because there is a big difference between the two. But in general, I am actually very satisfied.
