Role of large-scale ocean-atmosphere processes in the evolution of the North American monsoon: diagnostics and modeling

What are the dynamical mechanisms that link the WHWP with the evolution of the North American monsoon?

•Intraseasonal to interannual variability of the warm pools and their relationship to the overlying atmosphere.•Determine the role of the intensity and position of the subtropical highs in the evolution of monsoon precipitation.•Determine the structure and evolution of the large-scale moisture transport through numerical modeling.

SILLS: Exchange of Physical and Chemical Properties in the Northern Gulf of California (M. López, M.L. Argote and J. Candela).

Objective: Directly measure exchange of mass, heat and salt at the sills that control the entrance of water to the northern gulf of California.

Two years of measurements ending summer of 2004.

Currents, temperature, salinity and sea level measurements.

Page 11: Promotion of the North American Monsoon Experiment (NAME) Within México F. J. Ocampo-Torres

1. Concurrent meaurements of currents at the sills and sea level across the islands, could allow an efficient method to monitor deep inflow to the NGC, including interannual variability possibly related to El Niño.

2. Interannual variability of the exchange across the islands and sills could affect surface properties of the NGC such as SST. Two possible mechanisms are:

• A reduction of the exchange via an hypothesized blocking effect, could produce warmer and saltier surface waters in the NGC.

• A reduction of the exchange could also be due just to reduced warming and/or evaporation of surface waters, and this might me monitored through the deep inflow entering the NGC.

Relate varibility of the exchange across the islands and sills to surface fluxes of heat and water (evaporation) in the NGC.
