2 Training Preparation

The training held on 17th-20th February 2009 at COMPED Training Centre. The participants were invited from Royal University of Agriculture, EDC Training Centre, GERES, CELA-GRID, BORDA and SKD Company. Three persons were invited from National Bio-digester Program (NBP), 2 persons from REEPRO TOT and Mr. Chrin Phok, lecturer from ITC, pres-entation slides were copies as hard copies for all trainees in the REEPRO training Level1 Course4 on Biomass.

The participants were prepared to joint in the process of the biodigester plant which is built in parallel with the training session. Moreover, clay of termite mount was collected to construct a rocket stove instead of using Fibrocement. It is for reducing the cost of the stove.

3 Training Performance

The training REEPRO Level 1 Course 4 on Biomass focussed on theory, practical work and field visit to bio-digester plant construction in COMPED training centre area. Theory we had 7 presentations including discussion, question-answers and exercises.

Presentation slide: • REEPRO Introduction by Mr. Chau Kim Heng, Director of COMPED Organization • Introduction of Renewable Energy by Mr. Chrin Pork (ITC) • Biomass by Mr. Tan Sochettra (REEPRO TOT) • Biogas Processes and Parameters of AD Systems by Mr. Chrun Rithy (REEPRO TOT) • Bio digester plant by National Bio digester Program (NBP)

• Introduction to the bio digester technology (function, benefit, slury) • Process of biodigester plant and construction • Video construction part 3+4 of Biodigester plant • Video benefit of biodigester plant • Calculation of biodigester plant

• Entrepreneurship presentation by Mr. Chau Kim Heng Director of COMPED • Entrepreneurship Awareness

Practical Work and Visit Bio digester plant : Construction of Rocket Stove was instructed by Mr. Uch Rithy (COMPED). Trainees were guided to hit termite clay into small piece and mix with water and use it for filling surrounding the pilled bricks of rocket stove.

There was a field visit to a biodigester model, which is for cross-cut view. Complete biodi-gester is constructed for seeing biodigester functioning. For the model, we already con-structed before the training period and the complete biodigester plant has been constructing in parallel with the Biomass training session by participants and mason from National Bio digester Program (NBP).

• Biogas Construction for Fermentation

COMPED instructed participants how to build Rocket Stove and Advantage after we watched video of Rocket Stove from Day1 and then participants visited the biodigester model located in COMPED training Centre.

To have better understanding for the participants, COMPED has constructed a biodigester model which is for a cross-cut view of biodigester plant before the training started. COMPED has also been constructing a complete biodigester plant in parallel with the training session in order to have the participants joint with NBP mason to construct the plant. In the afternoon of Day 2, all participants have chance to practice with biodigester construction and instructed by mason from NBP.

Day 3: COMPED had invited experts from National Biodigester Program (NBP) for presenta-tion and taught the participants on biogas program since starting NBP and achievement. During the training the experts from NBP also introduced biodigester technologies (function of digester, benefit and slurry). NBP instructed how to process of biodigester plant and con-struction activity slides and construction video part 3+4. The training continues to play a video of benefit of bio digester plant; calculates biodigester plant and visits biodigester plant construction.

Day4: A presentation on Entrepreneurship Awareness by COMPED was given on the last day of the training. It was introduced on basic business, characteristics of entrepreneur. The participants were separated into two groups for SWOT analysis of “Who can be an entrepre-neur?” It also included discussion and questions were taken place as well. It finally followed by evaluation and feedback from the participants through questionnaires and point place-ment of level of biomass knowledge before and after the training.

3.2 Discussion

Discussion was taken place in the frame of questions by participants to respective resource persons as below:

• When the solar panel exposes to the solar light, does it have any effect to the environ-ment?

• Concerning to Geothermal energy, where should it be drilled? • Is there any relation between Jatropa and geography? • Is the application of Jatropa fuel same as that of diesel? • Do we have to chance machine elements? • Does biofuel burn produce CO2? • How much is the mixing proportion of biofuel and gasoline? • Does N, P, K of the biodigester slurry have any effect to the soil? • Does the dome leak oxygen? • Is there any catalyst boosting fermentation speed in the dome?

Page 10: Promotion of the Efficient Use of Renewable Energies in

REEPRO - Promotion of the Efficient Use of Renewable Energies in Developing Countries Training Documentation Report

6

• Can we use chicken manure for the biodigester? • Why do we have to mix the manure with water before putting into the dome? • Are there any formulas for calculating gas production? • Basically we want to eliminate CO2, but why do we produce CH4, which its burning pro-

duce CO2? • Which one of CH4 or CO2 causes global warming? • As trees absorb CO2 and maintain warming balance of the atmosphere, how fuel burning

from the earth cause global warming? • What are the differences between CH4 in the ground and from the biodigester? • Does it have approach to eliminate stink smell of gas from biodigester? • Why don’t people want to connect toilet to the digester plant? • What are the functions of bacteria in producing CH4? • From where the bacteria born? • Can Mesophyte bacteria become Hemiphyte one? • Can manure on the ground and without water produce CH4? • Can cement of the dome have effect on gas production? • Does the program of NBP help only the poor/rich/how? • After construction and implementation of the biodigester, does NBP conduct investiga-

tion? • Besides the target provinces of NBP, how can farmers contact to have the biodigester? • Why do N, P, K exist in the fertilizer? • In case of flooding, does it damage the biodigester? • Why do we know the slurry from the biodigester bearing nutrient for worm raising? • Do the 300 mansion in the villages get any training on the construction? • Between the gas of pig fed by food from kitchen and from industry? • How deep is the dome? • How long does it take to have 1Kg manure fully digested? • How big is the size of stone using for bottom of the dome? • Why does one have to build the biodigester in the ground? • When do we have to feed the biodigester? • How can we know the dome is leaking? • How is the temperature in and out of the dome? • Why the slurry flowing from outlet of the biodigester is from the old manure which has

already been done digestion? • Does insufficient input material to the dome cause any problem? • Can we deposit input materials for the biodigester, for example 3 days? • We can’t we consume all the gas in the dome? • Are there any systems for dewatering?

Page 11: Promotion of the Efficient Use of Renewable Energies in

7

• Can we use normal gas cook with the biogas? • How long do we have to remove water from the tube?

3.3 Conclusion

There are about one third of the participants are female, which is a good mixture and most of them are studying for bachelor degree in agricultural technology and electrical engineers and some are working in NGOs which is working dealing with biomass. All of the participants realised that the training met their expectation and relevant to their work and future plan of their careers. They also evaluated that the training was practical enough and understand how the device work and will be able to construct a rocket stove. However, the participants were aware that the training was too short and would like to have further training in rocket stove and business issues.

4.1 Invitation

REEPRO Project invited two trainees from REEPRO TOT. COMPED had a meeting with NBP several times to negotiate and coordinate to have them as resource persons for Bio-mass training. As the result, three persons were invited from National Bio-digester Program (NBP). Mr. Chrin Phok, lecturer from ITC was also invited to give a presentation on renew-able energy. Mr. Chrun Rithy, a lecturer of the Royal University of Agriculture and also REEPRO TOT has requested to have his students learned about Biomass and moreover, other trainees from NTTI, various NGOs and industrial factory were also invited it was met with the criteria of REEPRO project. That’s why this training took place for the REEPRO training Level 1 Course 4 on Biomass.
