Oklahoma Free Will Baptist State Missions was well represented at the National Convention in Kansas City, raising awareness of our church plants, promoting the opportunity for prospective church planters to partner with us, and giving folks an opportunity to grow more familiar with our mission efforts.

Join us at the state meet-ing in October to hear highlights of the past year and to learn more about how you can partner with us in planting more churches and continuing to spread the Good News around the world.

Written by Mike Wade, Executive Director for Oklahoma Free Will Baptists

Bro. Mike

Two nights ago as I was watching the 2016 Olympics from Rio De Janero, the prelims for the men’s 200 meter butterfly (a swimming event) were about to take place. The upcoming race was the semi-final round in which Michael Phelps would compete. Michael Phelps, in his 5th Olympics has won the most medals in Olympic history. In the room where the competitors wait for their race, the TV cameras cap-tured an interesting exchange. Several chairs were lined up and Michael Phelps was seated in the back row in the corner seat. While they were showing him sitting quietly and in deep concentration, another swimmer, Chad La Clos, was shadow boxing right in front of him. La Clos is the swimmer who beat Phelps in the finals of this very race in the 2012 Olympics in London. While the TV announcers were making much over the scene, I could not help but think of the words of the Apostle Paul to the church at Corinth when he used the analogy of sporting competition to illustrate the way in which the believer should approach living a life of victory. He said, “Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.” 1 Cor. 9:24-27.

I have no idea why La Clos was shadow boxing, it appeared he was trying to intimidate Phelps. It is

possible that something else was in his mind, but I thought, “ Buddy, you better not fight as one that beat-eth the air” . Phelps came in second in this preliminary round, La Clos came in third. Then the next night as I watched the finals, Michael Phelps won the gold and La Clos did not finish in the top three.

The outcomes of the various Olympic events are insignifi-cant when compared to what Paul was trying to convey to all of us who follow Christ. His point is that if the competitors in sporting events can invest themselves so fully and com-

pletely to gain a temporary reward (the ancient Greek games winners would receive a laurel crown), how much more so should we labor and invest ourselves into our efforts for the Kingdom. If they can be disci-plined to bring their bodies into subjection to achieve the physical strength and endurance necessary to win a race, how could we not be willing to make the sacri-fices needed to live a life pleasing to the Lord.

The 2016 Olympic games will have ended by the time you are reading this article. I hope they will be fresh enough in our minds to serve as a challenge afresh and anew for all of us to not just be satisfied to be in the race, but rather to give it all we have as we race toward that incorruptible crown.
