Right Tool, Right Message, Right-On

I encourage everyone to get out and explore the Park Rapids Lakes Area this month. Good weather is upon us and we Minnesotans know

how to take advantage of every warm breeze (it keeps the skeeters away) and late daylight hour (that’s when the fish bite!).

There is a lot going on in our little pocket of the world; festivals, celebrations, family gatherings, sporting events and often we get so tied up in our own day-to-day that we forget how truly terrific our area is.

I encourage you to take a moment to step back from the minutiae of your every day; the emails to answer, calls to make, to-do lists to check off, projects to start, fires to put out. Really STOP and look at where you are.

Think about “The Big Picture.” Where do you see your business in 1 year? Or in 5? Where do you see yourself in the same timeframe? What does your environment look like? What does the Park Rapids Lakes Area look like? What sort of things happen here? What sort of people are here?

True leadership comes with an ability to see the bigger picture. A vision of what the future could be if the stars would align *just so*. In order to craft “The Big Picture” we need to spend time on not just the “How” or “What” but invest time on the “Why.” View the whole picture, realizing that a true vision is more than just the sum of its parts.

Reflect: Has work become simply a means to earn a living? Are you focusing on your individual accomplishments or performance? Do you recognize the achievements of your colleagues or employees? Are you satisfied? We spend so much of our time at work – we deserve to make it the most fulfilling endeavor possible.

Take the time to visualize what your business is going to accomplish; for yourself, your employees and the community at large. Your Chamber is a membership organization committed to building a prosperous community. We are here to serve, promote and connect our members. Get plugged in to “The Big Picture.” Progressive things are happening in Park Rapids. It’s going to be a great sail, thanks for climbing in the boat and grabbing an oar!

When you're choosing the social media tools you'll use to promote your business and communicate with customers, it's important that the medium fits the message. Say you own a hair salon. You could write the most sterling blog posts ever known, but do people really

want to read about hairstyles? Probably not as much as they want to see hairstyles. Forget the blog. Waste of time. Showcase your work on Pinterest or YouTube, which are all about the visual. The idea is to make sure the medium fits the message and vice versa.

In the winter of 2014, Detroit Mountain opened its beautiful new lodge and re-deigned mountain for skiing and snowboarding. Progressive Trail Design out of Arkansas is adding the final touches to purpose built trails featuring both cross country flow trails and lift-serviced gravity fed trails. The trails are being engineered to host all levels of mountain bike enthusiasts. We have converted our rental shop to a bike shop and added a fleet of Trk bikes for rental, including tardtails, full suspension, and FAT bikes. A Strider Adventure Zone will be available for toddlers, and a skills park is available for practicing various features. We are engaged with the International Mountain Bike Assocation (IMBA) with the goal of becoming a designated ride-center.

The medium might be the message, but in an age where people are bombarded with messages and information-overload is epidemic, content is king.

No matter which tools you choose, your social media success depends on the quality of the content you deliver with them. Whatever you tweet, post, pin or upload has to be valuable to your customers. There has to be something in it for them. Something useful, helpful, interest-ing, entertaining, time-saving, cost-saving, fun.So, with that in mind, let's talk about some so-cial media tools to consider for your business.
