About us

Our process springs from a dynamic and focused design culture that fosters collaboration above all. This cohesive and interactive structure enables us to deal with large and complex projects both in terms of design and programme.

We have offices in Portugal, Kuwait, Mozambique and Qatar and partnerships in Algeria, Angola, Brazil, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Scandinavia, Spain, Switzerland and the UAE. However, rather than geographically, we are organized in practice teams, ensuring that each project benefits from the expertise of our most talented people.

In addition to our international partnerships, we have developed strategic associations with consultants from an array of experience that includes: Acoustics, Environmental Analysis, Infrastructure and IT Systems, Life Support Systems (for live exhibits), Lighting Design, MEP, Multimedia, Quantity Surveying and Cost Management, structural, Sustainability (for both buildings and infrastructure), Transport and Traffic, all of which come together to provide a solid hands-on experience and offer a holistic design perspective.

Hospitality Project Types Operators

In designing destinations, we recognize the importance of the total guest experience. Hospitality design is not merely about architecture; it embraces the guests’ every encounter with the space, from booking the stay to bidding the valet goodbye. This strategy has proven worthy not only for urban hotels or resorts, but also for the repositioning and renovation of outdated structures. At PROMONTORIO we know the effort hoteliers put into bringing guests the best conceivable travel experience and we know our job is more than just defining the box. It is about investigating the needs of our clients, and uncovering imaginative, industry-specific solutions that ensure your operational efficiency and promote the return on your investment.

Project Types Residential

Despite its timeless presence in the physical occupation of cities, housing patterns are in constant change paralleling the evolvement of family structure, social and cultural mobility, location and accessibility. Such changes, however erratically, are echoed in the market.

PROMONTORIO’s experience aims to step ahead and meet these changing demands by anticipating new typological and spatial designs for the different market segments. Moreover, we feel that the key to a successful residential concept, be it social housing, mid-cost cooperatives or high-end residential, lies in finding a balance both in terms of planning, construction and sustainability.

Cultural and Civic Project Types

Museums and Exhibitions Exhibition spaces, both temporary and permanent, require special skills in planning and design, not only because they accommodate artworks that often need special care in terms of space, lightning, acoustics, temperature, electrical and security, but because the concentrated attention of visitors, calls for solutions that are both refined and distinguished in detailing.

Our approach to exhibition space has always been to privilege the viewing of the artwork in the best conditions possible. This means neither allowing the set to overwhelm the object exhibited, nor ignoring the crucial importance of the display in the contemplationof a piece. This particular type of projects requires the experience and sensibility that PROMONTORIO has consistently demonstrated in various museums, art galleries and major exhibitions over the years.

Workplaces

The workplace is more than just a sum of square meters. It is a key element for the success of any business. From the developer’s viewpoint, the success of office space depends largely on how it is planned; flexibility, construction quality, running costs, energy efficiency, leasing area ratios, and last but not least, the exclusivity of its corporate image.

Understanding our clients is fundamental to our design process. Together with them, we explore imaginative, yet accessible environments that contribute to sustainable and profitable developments. We take what we have learned from our clients’ businesses and create state-of-the-art workspaces that reflect their corporate culture, foster efficiency and drive success, while producing landmark architectural designs that are responsive to the urban environment.

We believe that the character of the landscape has a deep influence on our built structures and quality of life. Landscape Architecture is about making connections: between people, between people and nature, between indoors and outdoors, between old and new.

Distinctive spaces, carefully crafted, serve a larger purpose by connecting people, culture, and the natural world. Well-designed, engaging landscapes and urban spaces form the foundation for healthy society and a long-lasting infrastructure.

Our practice is not simply focused on buildings and sites, but on the very streetscape we daily occupy: the physical framework of streets, squares, parks, plazas and gardens that create a sense of place. We practice across a broad range of project types and scales, from intimate small gardens to townships and large-scale campuses. Our projects are known for sensible and original strategies, working with demanding site conditions and climates.

With all aspects of design, from innovative materials selection to sustainable management practices, we deliver site-specific solutions that embrace the changing nature of the landscape.

Retail

Working worldwide hand-in-hand with international retailers is always a stimulating and challenging experience. Together we explore new trends in shopping and leisure and come up with new and exciting designs. As our track record consistently demonstrates, we have the ability to work successfully across borders and cultures, and consistently deliver comprehensive and exciting projects.

Since 1988, we have been designing retail-based projects, involving shopping centres, main street and mixed-use schemes, outlet centres, hypermarkets and superstores, retail parks and leisure destinations, sometimes in stand-alone big-box operations, other times in combinations of multi-purpose programmes.

We now boast an accomplished portfolio of more than 2,000,000 sq.-m of high-yield retail space, having amassed numerous design awards including ICSC, MIPIM, MAPIC and Real Estate Oscars, which granted us international recognition as a leading retail design firm.

We create truly stimulating environments, combining worldly experience with knowledge of the latest developments in retail, leisure and entertainment design.

We have always considered art inseparable from architecture and consistently worked together with contemporary artists in the widest possible range of commissions and collaborations. An early example of these collaborations was a wall-mounted neon installation by Pedro Portugal made for the 1990 National Book Fair Pavilion of the Ministry of Culture, in Lisbon, and another is the Victoria Banyan Tree Hotel, which incorporates site-specific precast concrete bas-relief panels by Pedro Calapez on the facades.

Other projects have involved artists such as Gabriela Albergaria, Pedro Falcao, Goncalo Barreiros, Ricardo Valentim, Mariana Viegas, Joao Louro, Inez Teixeira, Hugo Canoilas, Nuno Ribeiro, Nuno Cera, Daniel Blaufuks, Pedro Portugal and Alexandre Farto aka Vhils.
