HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT IDENTIFYINGTHIS PROBLEM?
PROJECTS: RESPONSE
PADARE/ENKUNDLENI /MEN’S FORUM ON GENDER
Padare discovered through research that most of the Care facilitators working in the communities arewomen and girls and there is a gap in maleinvolvement.
Through Padare’s implementation strategy it wasdiscovered that to achieve gender justice there has tobe a deliberate engagement of men in sharing theburden of care work with women and girls. When MEN started participating in communitygender dialogues by challenging harmful cultural andreligious practices that further suppress women andgirls.

IS THIS ISSUE IMPORTANT?
Yes it is important because the burden of carework is traditionally assigned to women and girls inmost households and communities. Men prioritizeincome-paying jobs in contrast to care- work whichis viewed as women’s work’.
It is important because it brings the need of equalgender participation in Care work.
Yes it is important to involve male care facilitatorsas it is a direct way of challenging genderstereotyping

HOW ARE YOU GOING ABOUT ADDRESSINGTHI S PROBLEM?
Identifying ordinary men in communities that are willing to betransformational leaders.
Training of male caregivers as a response to the communityneed of male participation
Helping men to understand gender equality and equityprinciples through gender training that enables men to dealwith misconceptions that equality.
By approaching men as facilitators of change in theircommunities as compared to oppressors that always violate
women through involving men in community dialogues ongender HIV & AIDS activities and women’s empowermentissues.

LESSONS LEARNED
Men respond well when space is provided where men are
free to explore their fears and anxieties about gender equalityand HIV & AIDS. This is key in identifying misconceptionsamong men on gender equality.
Men brings transformation by challenging harmful culturalpractices that hinder men from embracing gender equality and
promoting cultural values and HIV & AIDS responses thatrecognise all people as deserving equal dignity because theyare human.
There is need to conduct consistent research on knowledge, attitudes and beliefs that perpetuate harmful negative
masculinities among men.
