Sewing Directions: Embroidering the Design

1. Wind a bobbin with bobbinfill thread and place in the machine. Find the center of the fabric, then hoop your fabric and stabilizer off to one side of the fabric with the right edge of the hoop along the center line.

2. Before you can embroider the “Gift Boxes” design, you first need to download the six free 5” x 7” embroidery designs from singer.mySewnet.com. The “gift boxes” design is one of six in this group. Save the six designs to a USB stick.

3. You also need to download and install the Complementary Software – called PSW Intro. This software can be downloaded via your mySewnet™ account. Once you have downloaded and installed this software, you can view individual designs for color order and more. Once the six 5” x 7” designs are saved to your USB and the USB is in your computer, open the PSW Intro software and then select “Open an Existing Design”.

For more information about mySewnet™, downloading designs, updating your machine and more, visit the Support section of the SINGER® website.

Note: The “Gift Boxes” design is special in that it can actually be used 4 different ways:

As a 5” x 7” design for the optional 5” x 7” Hoop

As an Endless Hoop design, used with the optional Endless Hoop to sew border embroidery

As a basic embroidery design

As an applique design For this project, the design will be sewn as an applique. Embroidery appliques begin by first embroidering an outline stitch on your hooped fabric. The machine stops, and the applique fabric is placed over the outline stitch, then the outline stitches again. When the machine stops, the hoop is removed from the machine, and the outer edge of the applique fabric is trimmed away. The hoop is placed back on the machine so that the applique stitches can proceed to cover the outline stitching and the raw fabric edges.

4. Select design “01”, which is the “Gift Boxes” design. Make sure that the “Files of Type” dialogue box is set for Compucon .xxx file format. You will see a small preview of the design in the lower area of the screen. Click OK.

5. To view the color order of the design, from the Main Menu, go to File and scroll down to Print Preview. The color order will appear at the bottom of the page.

6. Remove the USB from the computer and place it into your embroidery machine. Touch the USB icon on the machine screen to access designs you have saved on your USB stick. The “Gift Boxes” design is design “01”. Select the “01”, then press OK (the “check mark”).

7. When the design appears on screen, you will notice that the hoop size for the Endless Hoop (180 x 100E) appears as the preselected hoop in the upper right of the screen. This is because our “Gift Boxes” design just happens to be both a 5” x 7” Hoop design AND an Endless Hoop design! It can be sewn as a border with the optional Endless Hoop, or as a single design with the 5” x 7” Hoop. Since we want to use the 5” x 7” Hoop, press the button at the upper right, then press the Hoop icon to see the full hoop selection.

8. Touch the 180x130 button, then press the check mark in the lower right area of the screen to tell the machine ‘OK’. Your design will appear on screen, within the sewing field area of the 5” x 7” Hoop. Attach your hoop, with fabric, to the machine.

9. Use the Position Arrows to move the design as desired within the hoop. You can then check the location of the design using the Trace function. Each time you touch the Trace icon, the hoop will move to one corner of the design’s parameter, and you can check all 4 corners. If you want to move the design within the hoop, use the Position Arrows again and test the location within the hoop once more using the Trace icon.

Note: Notice the 4 “marker stitches” in the 4 corners of this design. These stitches are only needed when using the Endless Hoop, to assist with determining placement as you create a border. Since you will be using this design as a 5” x 7” design for this project, these “marker stitches” can be ignored. They will still sew out, but they are loose, basted stitches that are easily removed at the end of embroidering the complete design.

10. When you are pleased with the design placement, press the button in the lower right corner of the screen to tell the machine you are ready to embroider. Thread the machine with the color of thread you want for your first “Gift Box”. Start embroidering. You will notice the “marker stitches” will sew first because this is also an Endless Hoop design. Let them stitch out, as they are easily removed later. Because this design is designed to be sewn as an applique if desired, the first color will sew as a simple “outline”, indicating where to place the 2” x 2” applique square.

11. Place one of the 2” x 2” applique squares over the initial stitching. Press the Start/Stop button to resume embroidery. The machine will sew around the applique fabric once more. When it has finished doing so, remove the hoop from the machine (but don’t take the fabric out of the hoop). Trim the excess applique fabric, close to the stitching. Place the hoop back on the machine.

Note: For embroidery applique designs, the “outlines” of each step of the applique process are counted as a color block. For this particular design, your machine will indicate that the design is 10 color blocks. Colors 1 (outline 1), 2 (outline 2) and 3 (applique) are for Box 1 Colors 4 (outline 1), 5 (outline 2) and 6 (applique) are for Box 2 Colors 7 (outline 1), 8 (outline 2) and 9 (applique) are for Box 3 Color 10 is for the Ribbons & Bows

12. Press the Start/Stop button again to resume embroidery. The machine will sew the rest of the applique stitches around the first “Gift Box”. When it is finished, the same process will be done for the 2nd and the 3rd boxes.

13. The last color is color #10, for the “bows”. Change to the color of thread you want for the bows and finish the design. The remaining “marker stitches” will sew, but they are easily removed. Take the fabric out of the hoop, remove the “marker stitches”, then carefully remove the stabilizer from the back side of the fabric. Press.

Sewing Directions: Constructing the Bag

14. Now that the embroidery is finished, it’s time to construct the bag. Change the machine from embroidery mode to sewing mode. Thread the machine with all-purpose thread in the needle and the bobbin.

15. Place the two fabrics together with right sides facing (one is the outer bag fabric, and one is the lining). Pin the fabrics together, then sew along both long sides with a ½” seam allowance.

16. Turn right side out and iron flat. At one short end, fold over ½” and press. Then fold it over 1” again and press. Edgestitch 1/8” from the inner edge. Repeat for the opposite end.

17. Fold the bag in half so that the short ends meet at the top, with the lining on the outside. Stitch along each side with a ¼” seam allowance, stopping 2” from the top edge.

18. There are two ribbons used for drawstrings. Starting with the first ribbon,

place a safety pin on one end. Insert into the casing, bringing it through one side, then back into the opposite casing, until both ends of this first ribbon meet.

19. Tie a knot in the ribbon ends. Repeat the process for the second ribbon, starting at the opening of the casing in the opposite end.
