They firmly belief that the limitations and constrains of a project are the creative driving force for a successful accomplishment. Following this notion, sustainability is regarded as the only way to design in the contemporary world. The current work ranges from the object scale to small and medium size projects (building and urban) and emerges from interdisciplinary dialogue and attention to craft, searching for an effective design that aggregates performance and budget in an emotional and engaging built environment. The project consists in 17 single-family row houses, based on the Portuguese social housing legislation. The site plan was already pre-defined. Proposed house volumes follow the street pronounced slope. Base building is the initial typology that can later be upgraded (typology upgrades are provided in the initial project). The upgrade was conceived in a way that maintains the initial street façade profile. The project starts with 3 “2 bedroom” and 14 “3 bdrm typologies” that can “grow” into a “4 bdrm typology”. The terrace roof finishing, insulation and door window frame can be reused in the 3 to 4 bdrm typology upgrade. Regarding interior design, owners can decide finishes and if they want an open, closed or semi-open relation of the staircase and living-room. Kitchen modules can form an “L” or “U” shape. All spaces have natural ventilation and daylight. Solar protection is ensured by exterior sliding shutters. Due to climate and wall insulation there is no need for space heating. Most DHW needs are covered by solar thermal collectors. As the houses are self-built, they comprise common low technology that consists in solar collectors for DWH, natural ventilation and manual solar and overheating control, which are user-friendly systems. They firmly belief thatthe limitations and constrains of a project are the creative driving force for a successful accomplishment. Following this notion, sustainability is regarded as the only way to design in the contemporary world. The current work ranges from the object scale to small and medium size projects (building and urban) and emerges from interdisciplinary dialogue and attention to craft, searching for an effective design that aggregates performance and budgetin an emotional and engaging built environment.

The project starts with 3 “2 bedroom” and 14 “3 bdrm typologies” that can“grow” into a “4 bdrm typology”.

As the houses are self-built, they comprise common low technology that consists in solar collectors for DWH, natural ventilation and manual solar andoverheating control, which are user-friendly systems.
