Eby Construction to erect the pre-engineered steel building for the Sedgwick County Zoo Elephant Barn. The Elephants of the Zambia River Valley habitat is the third largest elephant habitat in the country. The new habitat includes four separate yards which gives the elephant family plenty of options for exploring and wandering. The design of this habitat transports guests from just passively walking by the elephants to inserting them among the herd. Their new home encompasses a sprawling 5 acres of outdoor space, plus the 18,000 square foot indoor barn that Design-Build Construction erected. The new building, or barn as the Sedgwick County Zoo calls it, involves multiple spaces, including a guest visiting area, and access to the building during the winter months if the elephants are inside due to cold temperatures. Design-Build Construction erected the structural steel, installed the exterior wall panels and insulation, and the standing seam roof and roof insulation systems. Interior lights, duct work, and large, industrial ceiling fans were installed above 25 feet high within the barn, so that the elephants cannot reach and damage them. The barn has both manual and hydraulic-lift doors, and a kitchen where the keeper mixes the elephant‘s food which can be viewed by the public. The facility also includes a training wall for the elephants and offices for the keeper and other employees. The new barn can hold up to nine elephants and is in compliance with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums standards. SEDGWICK CO.
