Abstract

The report is about the construction of flyover at Aziz cross on G.T Road Gujranwala. The visit of the site was planned from our HOD and teachers. On 02, December 2016 at 8:30 AM whole class reached in the department. Our survey teacher Engr. Usman Anwar and Engr. Hadi Hassan gave us instruction about project and safety precautions to avoid from injuries. Its was the first official visit of our session. After that all set we were ready and excited about the visit. After fifteen minutes we reached at the site. We wait for ten minutes in the waiting room. They called us in the conference hall. There was Colonel Asim Bin Waheed, Muhammad Naveed, SDO Highway Muhammad Amir we met with them. After introduction they started a presentation about the project in which they introduce with the whole project. We have learnt many thing from that presentation. After the presentation some student and teachers ask question related to the project. Then, there was a refreshment for us. After all of this, we visited the project area with managing staff of the project engineers etc. Ask the questions about the things and work we observe there. They tell us about the thing which are used first time in Pakistan. Then, we were able to examine the structure material and instruments.

INTRODUCTION

National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPAK) was assigned the task of a detailed design by the

Communication and Works Department for a signal-free interchange at Aziz Cross, Gujranwala.

Presently, the traffic system on GT Road at Aziz Cross completely requires uplift in level of service and quality.

A cloverleaf interchange  is a two-level  interchange  in which left turns are handled by ramp roads. To go left vehicles first continue as one road passes over or under the other, then exit right onto a one-way three-fourths loop ramp (270°) and merge onto the intersecting road. The objective of a cloverleaf is to allow two highways to cross without the need for any traffic to be stopped by red lights, even for left and right turns. The limiting factor in the capacity of a cloverleaf interchange is  traffic weaving.

FIGURE. 01 (CLOVER LEAF INTERCHANGE)Aziz Cross project is a signal free interchange with partial clover leaf system and two

additional directional ramps.

INTERCHANGE CONFLICTS POINTThe two directions of traffic on the non-freeway road cross to the opposite side on both

sides of the bridge at the freeway. It is unusual in that it requires traffic on the freeway

overpass.

FIGURE. 03 (32 TRAFFIC CONFLICTS)

32 conflicts are completely resolved at Aziz Cross. The figure below show the conflict and

the traffic count at Aziz Cross Gujranwala.

BASIC COMPONENTS OF FLY OVER Bridge cross-section can be divided into two portions.

FIGURE. 05

SUPER STUCTURE This portion receives the live load directly. For example, Box

PILES: A pile is vertical structural element of a deep foundation which transfers super structure loads to the earth further down from the surface of subsurface layers.

FIGURE. 06

PILE CAP

Pile cap is a thick reinforced concrete mat that rests on concrete pile which have been casted in ground. Pile Caps distributes the load of super structure from piers and abutment into piles.

PIER: A pier is a reinforced, raised structure in form of pillars typically supported by well-spaced pile cap. It transfers the load from deck to pile caps.

For the project at Aziz Cross Gujranwala special shape of piers adopted.

It has two components.

1. Pier Shaft as column2. Pier canopy as transom

ABUTMENT: It refers to substructure at the end of the bridge span.

It supports;

Super structure load Live load Lateral earth pressure

REINFORCED EARTH WORK Reinforced earth wall is earth retaining structure and provided at approaches

(from road level to bridge level).

The key components of a Reinforced Earth wall are geo-strips, granular backfill

and precast concrete facing panels.

The frictional bond between the backfill supports the lateral earth pressure and

stresses induced due to traffic load.

PRE-STRESSED BOX GIRDER

An optimal and most efficient design of beam is box girder. A box girder consists of enclosed tube with

multiple walls.

The advantage of a box girder is that it better resists torsion. Having multiple vertical webs, it can also carry more load than an I-shape.

POST-TENSIONING CONCRETEPost tensioning is a technique for reinforcing concrete. Post-tensioning tendons, which are pre-stressing steel cables inside plastic ducts or sleeves, are positioned in the forms before the concrete is placed. Afterwards, once the concrete has gained strength but before the service loads are applied, the cables are pulled tight, or tensioned, and anchored against the outer edges of the concrete.

FIGURE. 13

ADVANTAGESPost-tensioning, which is a form of pre-stressing, has several advantages over standard reinforcing steel:

It reduces or eliminates shrinkage cracking-therefore no joints, or fewer joints,

are needed

Cracks that do form are held tightly together

It allows slabs and other structural members to be thinner

It allows us to build slabs on expansive or soft soils

It lets us design longer spans in elevated members, like floors or beams
