PROJECT DESCRIPTION AUG-US33-16.69 PID 99467 ODOT, the Ohio Rail Development Commission, and Ametek Inc. propose to eliminate the existing at-grade railroad crossing on US33, east of the intersection with Cemetery Road. The project is necessary to eliminate a safety hazard on US 33. Ametek currently receives, on average, three main line rail deliveries per week. During each delivery, traffic on US 33 may be blocked four times or more for 5 to 10 minutes each time, as rail cars are switched to/from the train. In addition, Ametek makes, on average, three internal rail movements per week that require crossing US 33. The proposed projects will eliminate these crossing blockages of US 33 and the associated safety hazard. The project will have a secondary benefit of reducing the use of the train horn to only that necessary at the Cemetery Road crossing. Currently, each crossing of US 33 requires the use of the train horn. Under this project, approximately 1000 feet of new rail spur will be constructed parallel to US 33, on the north side. This new rail spur will provide the necessary tail track length for the movement of up to 15 rail cars during rail pick-up/delivery from Ametek, Inc. After the new rail spur is constructed, the existing segment of rail line within ODOT’ s right-of-way will be removed. The new spur will be used only during rail pickup/delivery and will not be used to store rail cars. The project corridor is located in an area of mixed land-use, including a cemetery, industrial development, and agricultural lands. Acquisition of approximately 0.34-acre of will be needed from the south line of St. Joseph Cemetery. No other right-of-way acquisition will be required.
