Intercultural Language LearningIntercultural language learning (IcLL) provides knowledge, skills and values for our students that will enable them to use language in culturally aware and sensitive ways. They will understand that their cultures and languages are not static, and that the languages and cultures of others are not static either. They will be able to use these skills, values and knowledge to extend their capacities as second language users for useful, productive and meaningful engagement with other people and other cultures.

• Brainstorm some ways which you might address these in your classroom
![Page 8: Project Manager: Kylie Farmer Email: PL@mltav.asn.au](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062816/56814c3a550346895db940b7/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Activity 1• Work with a partner• You will be allocated two sections from pages
12-29 of the document ‘Getting Started’• Read through each section, discuss and
answer the following questions• Be ready to report back to the whole group
on your discussion
![Page 9: Project Manager: Kylie Farmer Email: PL@mltav.asn.au](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062816/56814c3a550346895db940b7/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Activity 1 - QuestionsRead through the sections you have been allocated, discuss and answer the following questions, then be ready to report back to the whole group:•What does the theory look like in practice in your classroom(s)?•Do any of the IcLL activities given as examples appeal as something you could trial with your Network? Why?

PLANNING• Which aspect/s of the Australian Curriculum
Intercultural Understanding General Capability am I wanting to address in my Languages program?
• Which ALPLP ideas/units would be useful- in my context?- to address the Intercultural Understanding focus
identified above?• How am I planning to implement my unit?• To implement this project, what resources do I need:- to purchase? to adapt? to find!
![Page 13: Project Manager: Kylie Farmer Email: PL@mltav.asn.au](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062816/56814c3a550346895db940b7/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
ENACTING• What am I noticing while I am implementing my unit?
(* Put comments up on the blog/wiki to share with colleagues!!)
• How am I responding to the way students are engaging in this unit?
• What evidence can I be collecting to demonstrate:- what is happening in the classroom?- students' learning?
• What changes am I making to my initial plan? Why?(*Share useful hints/ideas on the blog/wiki!)
![Page 14: Project Manager: Kylie Farmer Email: PL@mltav.asn.au](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062816/56814c3a550346895db940b7/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
OBSERVING• What does the evidence I collected say about students'
learning in relation to the Australian Curriculum Intercultural Understanding General Capability?
• How am I going to report on this learning?- to students (via reports and/or informally)- to the school community (via school newsletters/ displays/ leadership / curriculum meetings)- to network colleagues (via the blog/wiki)
• What did network colleagues find when they did a similar unit with their students? Why?
![Page 15: Project Manager: Kylie Farmer Email: PL@mltav.asn.au](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062816/56814c3a550346895db940b7/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
REFLECTING• What can I put on the blog/wiki to share with
others about what I have learnt through teaching this unit?
• What would I do differently next time I teach this unit?
![Page 16: Project Manager: Kylie Farmer Email: PL@mltav.asn.au](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062816/56814c3a550346895db940b7/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
ACARA – Revised General Capabilities in the Australian Curriculum: Intercultural Understanding• In the Australian Curriculum, students develop
intercultural understanding as they learn to value their own cultures, languages and beliefs, and those of others. They come to understand how personal, group and national identities are shaped, and the variable and changing nature of culture. The capability involves students in learning about and engaging with diverse cultures in ways that recognise commonalities and differences, create connections with others and cultivate mutual respect.
