In order to ensure its channel systems provide top functio-nality, BIRCO develops balanced, comprehensive concepts and supervises every stage of the work from planning through to the completed implementation.

BIRCO produces channel systems made of concrete, steel and PE for the drainage of surfaces and the drainage of aggressive liquids – from heavy-duty load areas right up to the drainage of roof terraces. BIRCO channel systems can also be used to drain rainwater near the surface into retention basins.

A variety of cover options is available for all our systems: cast grating covers, cast grates, galvanised steel grated mesh covers in a variety of mesh widths, bar grating covers, perforated grating covers and attractive design covers.

Depending on your requirements, our drainage systems can drain off aggressive liquids, provide channels and design covers for gardening and lands-caping engineering or meet your needs for simply laying drainage channels for private construction plans.

The apron of the Cologne-Bonn Airport was expanded in 2007 to include a spacious shunting and parking area for passenger aircraft. Loading, unloading, refuelling and maintenance work are conducted here, along with aircraft logistics.This is an area that is subjected every day not only to extreme loads, but which also raises ecologically relevant drainage concerns related to fuel and oil during fuelling and de-icing in the winter.

A BIRCOsolid box channel NW 300 was used to install a drainage system that handily deals with high levels of dynamic forces over a 900 metre stretch. The sealing joint can be visually inspected, thereby ensuring the drainage line for the long-term and meeting the requirements for federal water legislation-compliant sealing tightness.Mitred cuts executed at our factory reduced the installa-tion work on-site and contributed to accommodating the special needs of the site.

The more complex production facilities and industrial sites are, the greater the demands are that are placed on their drainage systems. The system must be capable of reliably draining accumulating water as well as substances that could pose a threat to groundwater.

The high-tech Nordzucker AG production facility for pro-ducing ethanol from beets was fitted throughout by BIRCO with a variety of nominal widths of BIRCOprotect channels, reliable supply lines from the BIRCOcanal product range and sump wells that can be monitored and connected to the BIRCOprotect channel system. TGV train station - Strasbourg Gare de Strasbourg is one of the most modern TGV train stations in the Rhine Valley. It is frequented daily by thou-sands of people and rail traffic.

BIRCO planned and completed the installation of a perfect polygonal channel line alongside the impressive glass buil-ding façade in only 4 weeks. A concrete ceiling in the base meant that only a low construction height was compatible and allowed little leeway for installation. The integrated slope feature in BIRCOsir compensates for this problem.

A BIRCO drainage system runs alongside this glass- enclosed train station. The system features consistent line layout laid in a polygonal fashion.

The BIRCOsir channels were fitted with a shut-off device so that they can be closed off in the winter when de-icing liquids run off from the aircraft gates and maintenance areas. In this way, the channel serves as a storage facility for these problematic liquids, allowing them to be collec-ted and then disposed of later.

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport was recently crowned one of Europe’s most modern airports. Drained, reclaimed land on the site means special requirements for its drainage system.

Situated at an average of 3 metres below sea level, this air-port required a special drainage concept. Along with the architectural requirements, the system had to additional-ly deliver great stability for heavy loads and the capacity for the smooth, targeted drainage of enormous drainage volumes. Drainage of the accumulating surface water into reservoirs for collection and dispersal was ensured with a combination of BIRCOsir and BIRCOprotect channels.

Covers are a drainage channel’s “face”. It is the covers that are noticed in the appearance of a town or city, and they can contribute to giving an aesthetic boost to the architectural line layout in public open spaces and alongside streets or building façades, providing the optimum combinati-on of design and quality.

Innovative drainage solutions are not distinguished sim-ply by the functionality of the channel and the efficient drainage of accumulating water. Modern drainage solu-tions adapt to their surroundings, contribute to the overall architectural design and enrich landscape or urban engi-neering planning. And it is the drainage system covers in particular that play a decisive role.

Metz – Place St. Louis with its arcade structures required a surface drainage system. Along with fulfilling the high architectural and structural specifications, the system also had to provide optimum drainage. Working together with Metz’s city fathers, BIRCO’s export property management team came up with a special solution. A channel for drai-ning rainwater runs down the middle of the square. Spe-cial plates with slot and rounded inlets were developed and produced as covers. The corten steel that was used gives the covers an antique character, and the plates blend comfortably into the overall look of the square.

The accumulating water is drained off under the covers virtually “invisibly” into open basins. Special corten steel plates in a wave design were produced and installed as transition points. This concept simultaneously ensures modern drainage combined with a unique look.

BIRCO developed a special cover for the expansion of the Frau-Clara-Strasse in Eckernförde. A drainage line with a fish-design cover runs down the middle of the street all the way to the granite pavement surface in the harbour area. “Wohnwerft” harbour residential complex in CologneThis residential complex offers its residents a unique living environment in an atypical building brimming with sophisticated lifestyle. The former harbour district was converted into an exclusive residential and business site. “Wohnwerft” represents one of the largest single residen-tial construction projects at the Rheinau Harbour, stret-ching over a length of some 170 metres along the Rhine promenade and boasting a total of six storeys.

BIRCO’s role in the Wohnwerft construction plans at Cologne’s Rheinau Harbour was to come up with an ideal solution for the drainage of the terraces and building façades. This included “no-trip” transition points from living spaces onto the terrace compatible with the remai-ning architectural design.

Rainwater management |Space-saving seepageContemporary construction management prevents excessive soil sealing. Rainwater should seep on its own back into the natural cycle. BIRCO develops and produces reliable seepage systems.

Collecting rainwater The increasing sealing of settlement and traffic areas leads to precipitation flowing more quickly into sewage systems, wastewater treatment plants and receiving waters. Floods resulting from overburdened canal systems and extending up to floodwater catastrophes dramatically illustrate the effects of continuous soil sealing. At the same time the groundwater level is sinking significantly in many regions, since the soil sealing of the natural surface prevents rain-water from seeping down to replenish the groundwater.

Some of the possibilities for sustainable ecological and economical rainwater management consist of local rain-water utilisation, centralised and decentralised seepage and landscaped roofing. Generally speaking, the possibili-ty of unsealing spaces should be the preferable solution, but design and usage reasons mean that it is not always possible to have rainwater seep directly through unsealed areas. Our focus is therefore on providing solutions for the drainage of sealed surfaces.

Transport for seepage The collection of sealed area precipitation water entails using corresponding drainage elements to transport the accumulating water to the next retention basin. The drai-nage element plays a central role in this and must ensu-re the fast, effective transport of the rainwater, even over large distances. Furthermore, the BIRCO drainage channels also serve as intermediate storage facilities during heavier rainfall.

Appropriate planning in the design of road profiles can ensure that when unusually large floodwaters rise the entire sealed area can be used as a tailback area, which in the best case can prevent the flooding of cellars, parking garages and buildings. The water is transported only a few centimetres beneath the road surface and can be diverted directly into the retention basins, eliminating the need for costly pumping equipment that uses high levels of energy.

Basins and cisterns Instead of the conventional drainage of surface water into combined sewage systems or separated sewage systems, these days such water is generally seeped into decentrali-sed basins or a linked basins/swales system.

A prerequisite for this approach is that precipitation water is collected near the surface and transported. The aim is to direct the water directly into the basins with as few detours as possible. As its seeps through the topsoil, this water replenishes the groundwater supply.

Rainwater on properties should seep into the ground, eva-porate or be used. This benefits the natural water cycle and replaces complicated, problematic drainage into waste-water systems. Flat seepage basins can be used where-ver precipitation is drained away only a few centimetres underneath the surface. The site has a natural character, construction costs for moving earth are low and mainte-nance is reduced to a minimum.

Since the flow of rainwater into drainage channels remains visible, it is easy to monitor. Conventional paved surfaces only possess opening ratios of two to four percent. BIRCO channel systems demonstrate valuable benefits in rainwa-ter management.

BIRCO’s factory service offers you a variety of customised channel panel solutions, either at a 90° angle or mitred. The concrete parts are cut including the covers so that installation at the building site can be conducted faster.

Polygonal cut and laid channel lines are not always called for only on the basis of the various building site conditions. They can also be attractive optical features giving open public spaces and areas structure and improving the line layout appearance of buildings and their façades.

needsWe can fit BIRCO channels with horizontal or vertical bore holes for directly fitting feed and drainage lines according to your plans. The connections available differ according to the nominal widths, extending in the standard range from DN 70 to DN 300. Different types of pipe, for example pipe connections with PEHD pipe sockets, are also availa-ble upon request. BIRCO also supplies ready-made pipe connections upon request and sludge buckets for channels with vertical bore holes.

The cut includes the coating or galvanisation of the cut frame connector edges and covers. An end piece is welded onto grated mesh covers and galvanised, providing impro-ved protection against rust.

BIRCOprocessing

Radial laying of channels and covers plays an important role, above all in entrance areas. Radial channel forms and covers are prefabricated at our factory and can be laid on-site fast and without any problems.

Polygonal channel lines are becoming evermore popular in the construction of terraces and building façades. BIRCO cuts all of the channels, corner cuts and cross cuts precise-ly to fit and delivers components to you that are ready for installation.

The cast “Wave” cover in a Y-layout is produced at our factory to your specifications and combines two drainage lines into one.

The Kostheim Lock, one of the busiest locks in the German waterways network, is located at the point where the Main and Rhine rivers meet at kilometre 3.2. Large-scale BIRCO-canal supply channels with a nominal width of 1,000 mm were installed for drainage alongside the lock chambers. These channels had previously been precisely cut to speci-fication to fit the course of the road.

Aggressive liquids require additional functions stipulated for drai-nage facilities by the construction regulatory authorities. BIRCO has deve-loped a number of products properties to ensure consistent positional stability and sealing tightness for the long-term.

Bloating guard The bloating guards of BIRCO’s AS product family firmly bond the drainage channel to the adjoining base structure. When the laying is conducted by properly trained perso-nnel, this virtually excludes the possibility of the sway or disengagement of the channels from the base structure.

Surface protection guard Selected BIRCO systems (such as BIRCOmassiv, BIRCOsolid) can be fitted with a single-layer protective sur-face that ensures the lasting durability of the channel ele-ment when confronted with heavy loads and particularly pointed loads (like container feet). This closed, slip-resistant steel surface protects the channel from wear and tear.

Jointing the safety seam All BIRCO concrete channels are fitted with a standardised safety seam. BIRCO offers a variety of different jointing possibilities depending on the liquids to be drained:

+ BIRCO SF Connect. Easy handling for additional sealing tightness of the channel systems for the drainage of precipitation, in accordance with DIN EN 1433.

+ BIRCOplast for reliable jointing for mildly aggressive substances, in accordance with federal water legislation (WHG).

+ Welding of the channel ends with BIRCOdicht by certi-fied specialist companies in accordance with WHG.

WHG-tested PEHD lining In contrast to conventional materials, PEHD (Polyethylene High Density) is persistently resistant against numerous aggressive agents. Thanks to its physical properties, PEHD also provides a crack-bridging effect.

In the channels and outfall units in the BIRCOdicht system, the concrete channels are lined with PEHD.

Beautiful Place Stanislas in the centre of the city of Nancy required complete renovation. Built from 1751-1755, the square’s renovation measures had to retain the highest possible degree of its original structure and architectural design with its characteristic Baroque buildings and gates. The square also required efficient drainage discreetly integrated into the historic layout of its lines. BIRCO slot attachment channels in the corresponding pavement pla-yed a major role in the design of the city centre while pro-viding a highly efficient drainage system.

The specified ordered quality characteristics are conscien-tiously inspected on a regular basis.

BIRCO tests the materials from its suppliers and its own products regularly with the very latest metrology techno-logy. Testing is conducted by our own quality management experts as well as by external, independent monitoring institutions. An agreement to conduct such testing was even concluded with the “Materialprufungsamt for Bau-products PUZ Bau”, an acknowledged and highly regarded German testing institution for construction products. Con-sistent testing plans allow us to register all of the relevant data and compose comprehensible test reports.

We conduct initial sample testing (documented in EMPB), we inspect all goods received for the stipulated quality characteristics and we monitor product quality continuo-usly throughout the production process. In this way, our own production processes as well as those of our suppliers are under systematic surveillance. All of this results in a quality standard that you can rely on.

Our seamless quality control means that BIRCO products not only comply with the required DIN norms, but are also certified by a variety of construction supervisory authori-ties. This is a standard that we are proud of and that we are working each day to improve on even more.

Extensive, detailed testing by our own internal testing facilities and by external facilities guarantees BIRCO quality.

Best materials and processing

BIRCO only uses high quality C 40/50 concrete for its con-crete channels. The stainless steel channels and covers are made of V2A steel. Cast covers are black dip-coated or gal-vanised, metal gratings are delivered galvanised.

Our 4 mm solid steel frame connectors are galvanised with a 70 μm thick layer and embedded into the channel.

This guarantees you a particularly high level of load stabili-ty and long serviceable life: Quality that pays.
