14

How do you begin?

You can…

• use the worksheet on pages 49 & 50

• use a checklist

• “mind-map” on a blank sheet of paper

• whatever will help you take the next step

Page 15: Project Compass: Libraries lead the workforce for the 21 st Century

What will YOU do?Here are a few ideas to get you started…

15

•Set up computers specifically for job search – hang an updated weekly job listing from Workforce next to those computers. Do not require a sign-in or a time limit.

•Collaborate with Workforce to come to the library and offer workshops.

•Hang a bright sign around the jobseekers’ computers: “Are you networking? Ask me how!”

Page 16: Project Compass: Libraries lead the workforce for the 21 st Century

What will YOU do?Here are a few ideas to get you started…

16

•Ask Friends to purchase thumb drives for job seekers.

•Don’t forget the “personal touch.” People need to know we care.

•Conduct step-by-step computer training.

•Create a “resume advice kit.”

•Make sure Wi-Fi is “on” 24/7 so that patrons can access it from the parking lot on weekends or after hours.

What will YOU do?Here are a few ideas to get you started…

17

•Look for partners in the community who could offer workshops/sessions on coping with the news of losing your job, dealing with the stress of being unemployed, etc.

•Develop a Community Partner Program and train others to be “certified” in helping to complete applications, resumes, etc.

•Invite HR personnel from companies to come in to do training on job skills.

What will YOU do?Here are a few ideas to get you started…

18

• Use eye-catching titles in advertisements for job seeker programs.

• Start a job club or connect patrons to career support groups.

• Teach job interviewing in English to bilingual job seekers.
