So,IhavesomethoughtsaboutExopolitics,whichIthinkaremyownandIdliketosharethosewithyoutoday.AndIdliketowrapitup,continuingalongthoselines,withmyownthoughtsonwhereweareheadedasasociety,asacivilization--indeed,asaspecies.Ithinkitallworkstogetherratherwell.So,werealittlebitbehindscheduleandIllmoverightahead.

MynewbookissubtitledTheCover-upExposed.Ittookmeaboutfive

yearstowritethisbook.Actuallyitsimpossibleformetoknowbecausemyfirstvolumewentthroughtwoeditions.Thesecondeditioncameoutin2002andpeoplebackthenIwasbrandnewinthefieldatthetimeandpeoplesaid:Oh,thatsaprettygoodbook.Whatabouttherestofthestory?[laughs]

Ittookalotoutofmeinalotofways,tobeperfectlycandidwithyou.Itwasahardbooktodo,harderthanthefirstvolumeIwrote.Iwasluckybecause,afterthatfirstbookcameout,alotofpeoplecameoutofthewoodworkandofferedmetheirresources.

Ihadonevery,verydearfriendofmine,anelderlygentlemanwho,whenhepassedaway,leftmehisentireimmenselibraryofnearlytheshysideof1,000books,nottocountnumerousjournals.Anenormous,enormouslibrarycollectionwhichIactuallyread;Iwentthroughallthejournals.

Youhavetounderstand.WhenIreadthesethings,Imverymethodical,ifyouknowme.So,whenIreadabook,Idontjustreaditandsay:Ohthatsagoodbook.IhavemynotesandusuallymywordprocessorandItakenotesallthewaythrough.EverylittledatumthatIthinkisinterestinggoesinthenoteswiththecitation:page77ofthisissueofthisjournal,whatever.Anditgoesin,sothatIputthemalltogetherintoanenormousdatabase.

MyUFOdatabaseisequalto,Ithink,abouta3,000or4,000-pagebookanditsfromthatthatactuallyIputallmynarrativetogether.So

itcomesfromliterallyhundredsandhundredsofdifferentsourcesdealingwithUFOlogy,butalsodealingwithpoliticsandgeopoliticsandpara-politicsandwhateverelseyouwanttocallit,andallothersundryweirdthingsthatstrikemyfancy,anditallgoesintomydatabase.

Sothen,whenIcometoyear,say,1977,IlllookateverythingfromthatyearanditallcomestogetherinawaythatIwouldnotprobablyhaveotherwisethoughttodo.ThatshowIwritemybooks.Itsnotwhattheyteachyouingraduateschool,butthatiswhatIdo.

Thisisaprettybig,fatbook.Itsalittleover600pages.Ivegotlotsandlotsofendnotesandindexentries.Infact,theotherwaytolookatthisisaseriesofalittleover200specificarticle-lengthsectionsthatIvetriedtoweavetogether.Eachsubsectionofthisbook,Ithink,canjustbetakenindependentlyandreadasitsownunit.So,ifyouhadaparticularinterestinonelittlething,youcouldopenthebookandreadthat,buttheyalldoworktogether.

Muchofourpastexistsintheformofofficialgovernmentdocumentsandarchives.Youmaynotknowthis,butinfactitisnowwidelyunderstoodthatthevastmajorityofU.S.governmentdocumentsevercreatedremaincompletelyinaccessibletoyouandtome.Theyareclassified.Inotherwords,alargenotalittle,butalargemajorityofourownhistoryisofflimitstous.ThisisntjustUFOs.Thisiseverything.

Weareinavery,verydifficultanddangerousstatewhenthelargemajorityofourwrittendocumentaryhistoryisnotavailableforustostudy.Thereisaveryseriousproblemwiththat.So,whatIvetriedtodowiththeUFOtopicismypartinsalvagingourhistory.Literally,thatshowIlookatit.Idontknowhowcompleteitis,butitsascompleteasImabletomakeit.

Towardthatend,IveusedthelargestamountthatImabletoofgovernmentdocuments,thatis,provendocumentsthatyoucantmakeanargumentagainst:journals,reliablejournalsoratleastinmyopiniongoodjournals,andthatincludesjournalsbyUFOinvestigativeorganizationsdoingon-the-spotinvestigations,awiderangeofsuchjournals;variousbooks,ofcourse.

AndIvedonealotofinterviewsforthisparticularbook.IactuallydontknowhowmanyindividualsIinterviewed,maybeacoupleofdozen.Maybe20or30peopledirectlyinvolvedintheeventsthatareinthisbook,Ieithermetwithinperson,ordidextendedtelephoneinterviews,orconductedcorrespondencewith,andgottheirstoriesdirectly.Andallofit,again,tryingtoweavetogetherasreliableanaccountasIcan.

Iwanttoemphasizethateverythinginthisbook,withacoupleofveryspecificexceptions,isverifiabledata.Now,therearesomeexceptions.

Anyresearcher,asImsureyouwillunderstand,whosbeeninthis

fieldlongenough,isgoingtohaveindividualsthatcomeuptothemandsay:Iappreciateyourwork.IhavethisbitofinformationthatIwouldliketosharewithyou.Hereitis,butyouhavetopromisethatyoucannotgiveupmyidentity.Ihaveasensitiveposition,etcetera,etcetera.Andthathappens;thatslife.Itsunfortunatethatithastobethatway,butthereitis.

Now,anytimearesearchergetsthatinformationandthenrepeatsit,keepingtheanonymityofthesource,ofcourse,itsadifficultsituation,becauseitputsyou,therecipientofthatinformation,in

anunequalposition.ThisissomethingthatInever,everbelieveindoing.

Myattitudeasawriterandasacommunicatoristhatwespeakasequals,sothatanythingthatIknow,youshouldbeabletoknowaswell.Thatshowitshouldbe.Thatshowgoodhistory,thatshowgoodscienceisdone,soItrytogoeasywiththat.

Imsometimesdistressedbysomeresearchersinthisfield,andImnotreallygoingtonamenames.Imnotinterestedindoingthat

today,buttherearepeoplewhoreallydothistoexcess,inmyopinion.

Maybetheyfeeltheyhavenochoice;theyfeelthattheyhavetogetthewordout.Buttheproblemisthatwhenyoudothis,yourenotnecessarilyhelpingthepublicdiscourseonthis.Whatyouredoinginsteadiscreatingalotofuncertaintyaboutit.

So,wereinadifficultposition.Wehavewhatwefeelarecertaintruthsandrealitiesthatwewanttocommunicatetotherestoftheworld,whichwefeelisinthedarkandasleep.Ithinkthatstrue.

Butwehavetobeawareofwhowearespeakingtowhenweengageinthiskindofconversation.Wehavetobeasresponsibleaboutthisaswereabletobeandnotundulyplacethepublicstrustinwhatwehavetosay,butrather,asIvebeensaying,thepublicshouldbeable,anytime,tocheckandverifythethingsthatwesay.

Okay,enoughsaidonthat.

Thisbookreallyis,asIseeit,threemajorthemesthatItriedtoweavetogether.Thefirstthemeiswhatwemightcalltheencounters,somethingofanencyclopedicaccountofthisparticular18-yearperiod

ofUFOhistory.

So,ifyouhadaninterestintheTravisWaltonevent,youcouldreadaboutitinmybookandmyhopewouldbethatyouwouldreadthebest,mostconcise,mostcomplete[and]greataccountofitinroughlyIthinkabout10pagesIspentonTravisWaltonthatyouwouldfindanywhere;orontheHudsonValleywavesofUFOsightingsofTheEighties,ditto;ortheHessdalencaseinNorway;ortheBobLazarphenomenoninthelate80s,oranythingelsethathappenedinthatperiodoftime.

Mygoalwasthatyoucouldusethisbookasareferenceandareliable

guideandknowwhatyouneededtoknow,learnwhatyouneededtolearn.So,thatwasthefirst,andthatsalotofthebook.

Thesecondmajortheme,though,Iguesswouldbethepolitics.Obviouslytherespoliticstothis.So,whatItriedtodo,again,islearnandanalyzetheprimarymilitaryandintelligencecommunitydocumentsthatdescribethis--notjustthoseoftheUnitedStates,incidentally,buttryingtogaintheattitudeofresponsibleagenciesfromanyandallnationsthatencounteredthis.

TheSovietUnionfiguresheavilyinthisbook,asdoestosomeextentevenChina;theEuropeannationsmostdefinitely,andothercountries

aswell:Australia,Africa[and]MiddleEast.Theyreallinhere.

AndtotheextentpossibleIvetriedtoweavetheirtakeonthisandtheirattitudeinhere--attitudesofvariousPresidents,ofallthePresidents;PresidentialpolicythatsrelevanttotheUFOphenomenon.Themaninthecenter,ofcourse,isDavidRockefeller.[referringtooverheaddisplay]Hesinthebook.Illgetintothatalittlemoreinjustafewminutes.

Thethirdmajorthemeorstrandofthisbookwouldbetheresearch.In

asensethisbookisahistoryofUFOlogy,whichisafascinatingstory.Infact,ofallthethingsthatIresearchedindoingthisbook,thereweretimeswhenIfeltthatthistome,waspersonallythemostinteresting.

BackintheolddayswhenIwasinmylateteensandearly20s,IwasstudyinghistoryandEnglishliterature.Thatwasmydualmajor.Myfocusinhistorybackthenwaswhatiscalledintellectualhistory.Itskindoflikethehistoryofideas.

Ivealwaysbeeninterestedinthat,andreallyitoccurredtomeinwritingthisvolumethatthestoryofUFOlogyisapartofintellectualhistory,withoutadoubt,andthisisastorythatIfeel,inreviewingtheliterature,reallyhadntbeendoneinasynthesized,coherentway.

IthinkthisbookisactuallyafirsttruehistoryofUFOlogy.Wellcometothatagaininamoment.

Theresabackdropinvolvedinthisbookanditsoneofglobaltransformation.Youhave,forexample,geopoliticaltransformation,thebreakingupoftheSovietUnionby1991attheendofthisvolume.

YouhavethebirthofpersonalcomputingandeventheInternetbeforetheendofthisparticularperiod.AndyouhavethroughoutItriedtolookatwhatwemightcalladvanced,eitheropenorcovert,cutting-edgetechnologies.Theimageonthetopthere[referringtooverheaddisplay]isthefamousARVAlienReproductionVehicle.

IthinkIsawGordonNovelhereintheaudience;Gordon,hello,ifyourethere.

So,inotherwords,therearethingsinthelargerworldatlargethataffectedthisstory,andagain,Itriedtopayascloseattentionto

themasIcould.So,Ijustwantedtoexpandalittlebitoneachofthosethreethemesandthenmoveontothenextpartofthistalk.

Theencounters:ThethingthatstrikesmewhenIreviewedthecasesinvolved,theUFOencountersthattookplace,isthequantityofwell-documented,justastonishing,mind-blowingencountersthattookplace--militarycasesgalore;hundredsandhundredsofthem.

IwasfortunateingettingaccesstoadatabaseprovidedtomebytheresearcherandformerAerojetemployee,RonRegehr.RonworkedonhewasinvolvedinbuildingwhatwascalledtheDSPsatellite.ThatsDefenseSupportProgramsatellites.AveryinterestingkindofsatelliteinwhichRonargued,Ithinkwithalotofpersuasion,that

theyaredesignedperfectlytobeUFO-spottingdevices.

Inanycase,Ronwasableaccidentally,butlegally--toobtainalistofDSPtracksofFastWalkersduringthisperiodoftime;inotherwords,FastWalkerbeingthecodewordforUFOintheupperatmosphereinspace.

Therewere...Imtryingtorecall...from1973to1991about283,Ithinkthatsright,FastWalkertrackingsbytheDSPsatellitesduringthatperiodoftime.Itslikeoneeverymonthormore,15ayear,I

believe.Acoupleofthemwerereallyinteresting,oneinwhichanobjectcameinfromspaceanddidaU-turninthevicinityofoneofthesatellites.

TherewasalsoaDSPtrackingofaUFOduringthespectacular1976Iranianjetfighterintercept.ManypeoplearefamiliarwiththisandI,again,coverthisatlengthinmybook.

Tomakealongstoryshort,inSeptember1976,overthecityofTeheranand,ofcourse,thisisbackinthedaysoftheShahwhenIranwasanallyoftheUnitedStatesalargenumberofTeherancitizenssawthisveryunusualobjectintheeveningsky.Theycalledthelocalairport.

Theairtrafficcontrollerpersonatfirstthoughtitwassilly,thenhewentoutandlooked[laughs]andsawexactlywhatpeoplewerereporting,andhecalledtheIranianAirForce.TheysenttwoF-4fighterjetinterceptorsinsuccession,andweknowallaboutthisbecauseweknowalotaboutitbecausewehaveaveryextendeddefenseintelligenceagencymemodescribingthisinfascinatingdetail.

WhathappenedisthatineachcaseoftheF-4encounters,whentheygottowithinarangeof25nauticalmilesofthisobjectwhichthey

trackedonairborneradar,whichtheysawvisually,whichastonishedthepilots,eachofthemwhentheygottowithin25nauticalmiles,theirkeyelectronicsystemswentoffline.Inonecase,rightbeforeonepilotwasabouttofireamissileatthisobject.Itdisabledthemissilesystem.

ItsohappensthatwehaveDSPtrackingdataofaFastWalkerinexactlythatspotatthattime--prettyinterestingconfirmation,indeed.

Backtothequantityoftheseencounters,andwhatwefindisjustanenormousamountofunexplainedeventsgoingonthatanyresponsibleresearcherwouldhavetoinquireabout.Forgettheissue,initially,

ofaliens.

ThebiggestfrustrationIhavewhenItalktoskepticsaboutthisisthattheyjumptenstepsaheadoftheargumentandtheyllsaysomethinglike:Wellthatsimpossiblebecauseitsimpossibleforalienstocomeherefromanotherplanet.Dontyouknowanythingaboutastrophysics,orspacetravel,ortheimpossibility...

Well,okay.IcantarguethatandIknowaswellasthenextpersonthatwedonthaveaway,ourselves,ofgettingtotheneareststar;notofficially.

Butnevertheless,therealissueisinlookingattheseUFOreports

andthentryingtomakesenseoutofthem.Sure,itseasytojustsayitsimpossible,butthequestionis:Whatdoyoudowiththereports?Whatmostpeopledoistheyignorethem,ofcourse.Thatstheeasything.

Anumberofotherveryinterestingdevelopmentsduringtheseyears...Abductions:Iactuallywritequiteabitaboutthatphenomenon,andagain,Imgoingtocomebacktothatshortly.

Themutilationphenomenon:IsthatoristhatnotrelatedtotheUFO

phenomenon?Ithinkitis.Cropcircles,ditto.Ithinkthattheresarelationshipthere,andalloftheseItriedtodealwithaswellasIcould.

Soconcluding,provisionally,regardingtheencounterthreadofthisbook,theresalotofconclusionswecanmake.Letskeepitsimple:ThereisanoverwhelmingevidenceforUFOreality.

Tome,ifIweretohavetheopportunitytospeaktosomebodyonNBCorsomemajornetwork,thisisthemessageIthinkthatIwouldemphasizethatletstakeonestepatatimehere,andtheevidenceisoverwhelming.Thiswasmyfirstprimarygoalinputtingthisbooktogether,wastolaythatevidenceoutaspersuasivelyasIcould.

Thepolitics:Imgoingtoexpandalittlebitonthis.Letmejustjump,putalloftheseoutthereandwecantalkaboutthem.ThererealotofthemesinmybookthatdealwithwhatwewouldcallthepoliticsofUFOs.Eachofthepresidentialadministrations,Itriedtodealwith,Ididdealwith.

1973:WehadRichardNixonstillintheWhiteHouse.TheressomeprettygoodNixonUFOtheresonegreatNixonUFOstory.Thatsthe

Nixon/JackieGleasonstoryandthatsinmybook.

JimmyCarterandthewhole...oh,skippingGeraldFordthroughCarter,throughtheReaganandBushyears--itturnsoutthateachofthesePresidentshassomefascinatingconnectionstoUFOhistory.Sothatsoneaspectofit.

Yes,ithappenedandithappenedmultipletimesduringabriefperiodinlate1975.Andweknowforsurethatthisexcitedtheconcernofresponsibleagencies.WelearnedaboutthisbecausewewereataveryuniquestageinAmericanhistoryinthelate70s,andthatwaswhentheFreedomofInformationActwasactuallykindof,sortof,useful.

BackinthosedaysthiswastheearlyCarteryearsJimmyCarterhadaveryliberalattitudeaboutFOIAanddidpromotearelativeamountofopennessinrelationtothesegovernmentdocuments.

whodsubmittedtheirarticlestotheMUFONUFOJournal.

SuddenlytheoldguardofUFOlogylostcontroloverthisdomain.Youcouldsaythatsagoodthing,youcouldsaythatsabadthing,butthatswhathappened,forbetterandforworseinfact,becauseafterthat,afloodofinformationthencameout.Andagain,afascinatingstory.

Inthecourseofhumanhistory,wevehadmultiplecivilizationscoexistingatthesametime.GobackathousandyearsthecivilizationofChinawasverydifferentfromthecivilizationoftheNearEastorofEuropeorofNorthorSouthAmerica.

Overthecourseofthelastmillennia,ofcourse,thesecivilizations
