Major detours in conceptual learning can occur very early in a child’s education; when students should be learning the fundamental nature of numbers.

Fran pretends to understand numbers in 1st grade and memorize procedures for counting, adding and subtracting. By 2nd grade, someone has told her, “I am not a math person.” She is taught to line her digits up to the right when adding two or more values.

Successfully incorporate math in your STEM programs to combat misconceptions.

ART OF STEM PROFESSIONAL & STUDENT PROGRAMS

A third-grader uses fingers to count just THREE objects on a table.A sixth-grade honor student still lines numbers up to the right…even when adding decimals.

High achieving students avoid careers in math and science.Straight-A math students can’t use a tape measure to make a 180-inch line.

Science students on the college track fail to understand a simple graph.

In 4th grade, that early addition ‘trick” fails when decimals enter the picture. Fran never really understood the nature of a base ten system, & place value is lost. Without place value, long division is lost. The “bring down” process becomes just another math trick.

By sixth grade, pre-algebra becomes rote memorization. Fran and many of her friends are failing. They begin to rely on the phrase “I’m not a math person.” By 10th grade, Fran and most classmates will no longer have the option of choosing STEM career paths.

Just one mentor commiserating in this way can steer a child off the math track.

Integrated math experiences help students avoid relying on tricks that lead to misconceptions.

Deep learning at the fundamental math stage is crucial to long range academic success & career choices.

Take Fran for example:

Improve Teacher Content Knowledge Through Half-Day Workshops

Our presenters assist your teachers using the gradual release model to present an in-school field trip which is not only an enjoyable experience for your students, but also leaves your teachers better prepared to work STEAM concepts into their daily lessons!

Our half-day interactive workshops target your staff’s preconceptions about math and science and promote improved student learning. We address your staff’s self-identified areas of concern or prepare for upcoming units within your curriculum map!

STEAM Project Based Learning for Real Classrooms

π & Coffee Chat With Beverly Simmons and Jeannie Ruiz

Our two-hour make & take workshop provides educators with the training and materials necessary to present a story-based STEAM challenge to their students upon leaving the workshop!

This two-hour conversation will help drive your staff’s vision of STEM within your school and build a relationship, allowing your faculty to move forward with focus and support.

Why use Art of STEM to meet your Professional Development needs? Establishing a relationship with the team at Art of STEM first and foremost gives your staff access to on-demand support via email and phone for all sorts of content questions and STEAM programming queries. Intro to STEAM and STEM Project Based LearningThe acronyms may come and go, but the concepts have been around for more than a decade. Learn the fundamentals of successful “project based learning that doesn’t forget the learning.” Participants engage in discussion, take part in a short STEM investigation, and activate prior knowledge in the context of project based learning. STEAM is not expensive or difficult!

K-2 STEAM Start!Build foundations for a lifetime of data driven problem solving. Introducescientific methods and the engineering design process while developingnumeracy, place value, literacy, and measurement. Participants take away aSTEAM unit plus STEAM planning materials for use with their current curriculumoptions. Any investigation can become STEAM with a few small changes!

Driving STEM Grades 3-5Students have increased scores and developed deeper understanding of data driven decision-making in the context of physical science with “Driving STEM.” The workshop introduces physical science as a springboard for project based learning. Educators transfer knowledge directly back to the classroom with resource materials included in the workshop.

National STEM League for Middle and High SchoolsDiscover project based learning that takes STEM to a whole new level! The National STEM League is a practice league for future STEM professionals. The path to STEM literacy and becoming a contributor to the Innovation process is different for every student. Students share work on a secure server to get feedback from remote STEM mentors, earn points, share ideas with other teams and swap assets such as 3-D printer time or CAD files.
