What is ozone

A colorless gas Highly reactive gas Composed of three oxygen atoms Two kinds of ozone –Good and Bad Good Ozone: protects us from the sun’s

ultraviolet radiation. Bad Ozone: Ozone pollution or smog.

What is ozone depletion?

The continent-size hole in Earth's ozone layer keeps getting bigger and bigger.

ODS (Ozone Depleting Substances)

Substances (ODSs) are those substances which deplete the ozone layer.

Used in refrigerators, air conditioners, fire extinguishers, in dry cleaning, agricultural fumigants.

Name of ozone depleting substances

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), Hydro chlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), Halons, Methyl bromide, Carbon tetrachloride, and Methyl chloroform.

Effect On Temperature

The term "climate change" is known as "global warming."

Temperature is rise by 2-3 degree. This term is also known as green house

effect.

Effect On Agriculture

World Health Organization estimates that a quarter of the world's disease burden is due to the contamination of air, water, soil and food

Solar radiation, temperature, and precipitation are the main drivers of crop growth; therefore agriculture has always been highly dependent on climate patterns and variations

Effect On Health

The list of infectious diseases influenced by UV-B exposures continues to grow.

Ozone depletion and climate change may interact to enhance the spread and/or severity of a number of diseases

Control Measures

Plant trees and don't burn plastics. We really have very little control over the issue.

Buy air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment that do not use HCFCs as refrigerant.

Regular inspection and maintenance of air-conditioning and refrigeration appliances

Page 14: Project aim: what is ozone depletion?

Do the motor vehicle air-conditioners servicing regularly.
