to create repeating elements of an image. In the

following steps, you will learn how to use the symbol

tools to craft an energetic but subtle background.

Reverse rotation, size reconfiguration, scrunch, opacity

and color adjustment can all be applied to symbols to

create an intriguing image quickly and easily.

Step 2Choose File, Place. In the Placedialog box, select theBOOK_10/PROJECT02/SOURCE/DRAWING.JPG file from thesupplementary CD-ROM, andthen click the Place button toload the DRAWING.JPG image.

Step 3Double-click the Layer 1 layerto open the Layer Options dia-log box. Type “woman” in theName area and select theTemplate checkbox. By select-ing the Template checkbox,you change the woman layerto a template layer.

Step 4You have now fixed theDRAWING.JPG image on thetemplate layer so it cannot bealtered by any tool. Fixing therough sketch on the templatelayer rather than drawing theimage directly using the Pentool is a much more conven-ient method and creates amore lifelike image.

ELEMENT 01Creating a Template Using a Rough Sketch

Step 1Choose File, New to open theNew Document dialog box(Command/Ctrl + N). In theName area of the NewDocument dialog box, type“fashion illust,” select A4 fromthe Size pull-down list, selectMillimeters from the Units pull-down list, and choose theCMYK Color radio button.Press the OK button whenyou’re finished.

Step 4Knowing how to use the Pentool effectively is the secret tocreating highly polished ele-ments of art in Illustrator. Toadd an anchor point to a seg-ment of an existing line, usethe Add Anchor Point tool andclick the line. To removeunnecessary anchor points, usethe Delete Anchor Point toolto click the anchor that youwant to remove. Clicking withthe Pen tool will create pointswithout direction keys, butclicking and dragging the Pentool will create points withdirection keys. Using the roughsketch as a base, draw the linesone at a time.

Step 5Zooming in when drawinglines will help you create better detail. To zoom in,either use the Zoom tool orpress Command/Ctrl and SpaceBar while clicking on the workspace. To zoom back out,press Command/Ctrl, Space Barand Option/Alt. The image created using the Pen tool isshown here.



Step 1Create a new layer in theLayers palette. Double-click the Layer 2 layer and type“line” in the Name area, click the OK button.

Step 2Set the Fill to None in the Colorpalette and set the Stroke toblack. The Swap Fill and Strokebutton flips the configuration.Use the Pen tool to outline thesketch. To see your outline,choose View, Outline so thatonly the path line of the imageis visible (Command/Ctrl + Y).

Step 3By pressing the Command/Ctrlkey while drawing with the Pentool, you can easily move thepoint in the direction you wantwithout having to use theDirect Selection tool. TheOption/Alt key is a shortcut keyfor the Convert Anchor Pointtool and clicking the point with this tool will eliminate all direction keys. To drawsmooth curves, press down theOption/Alt key again and clickand drag to create directionkeys on either side of the point.

Step 6Choose View, Preview to see the black-stroke lines asshown here.

Step 1Create a new layer in the Layerspalette. Double-click the Layer3 layer and type “body” in theName area, click the OK button.Lock the line and woman layersby clicking in the Toggles Lockbox. Lock your layers whenthere are many layers or whenimages overlap and you wantto affect only one.

Step 3Create a new layer in theLayers palette. Double-click theLayer 5 layer and type “dress2”in the Name area, click theOK button. Set the Stroke and Fill as shown here.

Step 4To make the dress appear morenatural, use the Pen tool todraw the folds of the dress.

Step 5As shown here, the folds of the dress have been drawn.



Step 1Make a new layer in the Layerspalette. Double-click the Layer4 layer and type “dress1” inthe Name area, click the OKbutton. Lock body layer to pre-vent any changes to it.

Step 2Set the Stroke and Fill asshown here. To temporarilyhide the lined image, deselectthe Toggles Visibility box nextto the line layer. Use the Pentool to outline the dress asshown here.

Step 4Create a new layer in theLayers palette. Double-clickthe Layer 8 layer and type“hair line” in the Name area,click the OK button. Set theStroke and Fill as shown here.Use the Pen tool to draw inthe hairline.

Step 5In the Layers palette, drag and drop the woman layeronto the Delete Selection iconto remove the template. Youhave now completed the basic line drawing.



Step 1Create a new layer in the Layerspalette. Double-click the Layer6 layer and type “lip&accesso-ry” in the Name area, click theOK button. Set the Stroke andFill as shown here.

Step 2Using the Pen tool, draw in the lips, earrings and shoes asshown here.

Step 4Select Stroke in the toolboxand set the color in the Colorpalette as shown here.

Step 5Choose Window, Brushes toopen the Brushes palette (F5).To load additional brushes intothe Brushes palette, chooseWindow, Brushes Libraries,Other Library. In the Select alibrary to open dialog box, openAdobe, Illustrator 10, Presets,Brushes folders and double-clickthe ChalkCharcoalPencil file inthe Artistic folder to load thebrush file into Illustrator.

Step 6Clicking on the brush in theChalkCharcoalPencil palettewill add it to the Brushespalette.



Step 1Unlock the body layer in theLayers palette. Using theSelection tool, click the faceto select it.

Step 2Select the Gradient tool to cre-ate a gradation. Click the leftcolor tab at the bottom of thegradient spectrum in theGradient palette, which can befound at the bottom of theColor palette. Set the Fill in theColor palette as shown here.Select Radial from the Typepull-down list in the Gradientpalette and click the blackcolor tab.

Step 3Create a natural color for theface as shown here. Select theGradient tool. Click and dragfrom the left side of the faceand outwards to create the gra-dient. Continue this step untilthe desired result is achieved.To apply vertical or horizontalgradation, click and drag whileholding down the Shift key. Thelonger the distance of the drag,the wider the spread of thecolor sphere, this creates amore natural result.



ELEMENT 6Using the Brushes Palette to Complete the Face

Step 1Using the Selection tool, selectthe torso. Using theEyedropper tool, click the faceto apply the same color, gradi-ent and brush stroke as theface to the torso.

Step 2Click an empty space belowthe Gradient Slider in theGradient palette to create aColor tab. Create a mid-tonecolor in the Color palette andapply it to the tab. To create acolor that is slightly differentfrom that of the face, clickthe other Color tab in theGradient palette toswitch the colors.Drag the diamond-shapedLocation pin in theGradient paletteor drag each ofthe Color tabs toadjust the color sphereof the gradient.



Step 7Apply one of the Artisticbrushes to the stroke of theselected face as shown here.

Step 8Try applying each of the differ-ent brushes. Select the desiredbrush to complete the face.



ELEMENT 7Drawing the Body Using Gradient and Art Brush

Step 5You have now completed thebody portion of the image

Step 1Select the dress1 image. Clickin the empty space below thegradient spectrum in theGradient palette to create aColor tab. After clicking on the Color tab, select the fourdifferent colors that will beapplied to the dress in theColor palette.



Step 3To adjust the size of the brush,double-click the Pencil brush inBrushes palette. In the ArtBrush Options dialog box, setthe Width to 50%, click OK.The Stroke has returned to itsoriginal size. Exit from this byclicking on an empty space onthe screen.

Step 4Select the legs by using theSelection tool. Using theEyedropper tool, click the torsoto apply the same color, gradi-ent and brush stroke as thetorso to the legs. Continueapplying a gradient using theGradient tool until the desiredresult is achieved and the colorappears natural.



ELEMENT 8Completing the Dress

Step 4Select the first element ofdress2. Choose Other Library,and then load thePaintbrush.ai file from theArtistic folder. Click Splash 1 inthe Paintbrush palette andapply it to the selected object.Double-click the brush and setthe Width to 50%.

Step 5Set the Fill color to None andset the Stroke color to a slight-ly dark pink.



Step 2Select the Gradient tool andkeep applying the gradient bydragging the mouse until thedesired shading is achieved.The gradient will differdepending on the length anddirection in which the mouseis dragged.

Step 3Change the Stroke in the Colorpalette as shown here. ChooseWindow, Brush Libraries, OtherLibrary to apply a brush effectto the strokes of the dress. Inthe Select a library to opendialog box, follow the routeleading to the Illustrator 10program and load the ink.aifile from the Artistic folder. Inthe Ink palette, click the DryInk 1 brush and apply it to theselected object. To decreasethe brush size, double-click theDry Ink 1 brush in the Brushespalette and set the Width to60%, click OK.



Step 1Select the lips. Set the Stroketo None so that only the gradi-ent is visible. After clicking onthe Color tab in the Gradientpalette, specify the color valuein the Color palette. Select theGradient tool andkeep applying thegradient by draggingthe mouse until thedesired shading is achieved.

Step 2Use the Selection tool to selectthe earrings. Apply a purplegradient as the Fill color forthe earrings and apply a brushto the Stroke. Double-clickCharcoal in the Brushes paletteand set the Width to 10%.Click the Stroke tab to open itand set the Weight to 0.5pt.

Step 3Follow the steps above to complete the accessories.



Step 6Select the second element ofdress2. Click the Eyedroppertool on the dress1 image to fill in the Fill color with thegradient color. Select theGradient tool and keep applying the gradient by dragging the mouse until thedesired shading is achieved.Apply the gradient to the thirdelement in the same way.

Step 7 Select the shoes. Afterclicking on the Color tabin the Gradient palette,specify the color value in the Color palette.Unnecessary color tabs can be deleted by draggingthem outside of thepalette. After specifyingthe Stroke color in theColor palette, click theCharcoal, Rough brush in the Brushes palette and apply it to the object.



ELEMENT 9Drawing the Lips, Accessories and Hair

Step 5Select the hairline image.Double-click the Splash brushin the Brushes palette andthen set the Width to 20%.Make it so that only the Strokecolor is visible and then set theStroke Weight to 0.5pt. Exitfrom this by clicking on anempty space on the



Step 4Select the hair image. Afterclicking on the Color tab in theGradient palette, specify thecolor value in the Color paletteand switch the Stroke color.



Step 3Click the Fountain Pen brush inthe Ink palette and apply it tothe selected image. Double-clickFountain Pen and set the Widthto 10% in the Art Brush Optionsdialog box. This will apply thebrush to the entire image.

Step 4The black line of the image is too overpowering. Again,select the entire line image andadjust the color in the Colorpalette. The image appearsmuch softer as shown here.



Step 1In the Layers palette, drag theline layer to the very top andlock all of the other layers. Usethe Direct Selection tool toselect the entire image.

Step 2Choose Object, Arrange, Bringto Front to bring the lineimage to the top(Command/Ctrl + Shift + ]).



ELEMENT 10Drawing the Line Using the Art Brush

Step 7Use the Selection tool to selectthe hairline image and thenset the Opacity to 67% in theTransparency palette.

Step 8To preview the overall image,choose View, Hide Page Tilingto remove the Tiling lines.



Step 5Unlock all the layers and thendrag the lip & accessory layerbelow the dress1 layer andselect the shoes. Choose Object,Arrange, Send to Back to movethe shoes behind the dress(Command/Ctrl + Shift + [).

Step 6Select the first element of the dress2 image and set the Opacity to 61% in theTransparency palette. Adjustthe opacities of the second and third elements.



Step 3Specify the same color for theStroke and Fill colors. Then,click the Dry Brush 6 brush inthe Paintbrush palette andapply it to the Stroke.

Step 4Lock the background layer andthen select the entire image.Then, move the selected objectsto the lower right-hand side ofthe screen as shown here.



Step 1Create a new layer and move itto the very bottom of theLayers palette. Double-click thelayer and name it “back-ground.” Select the Rectangletool and specify the Fill color.Draw the rectangle in theimage as shown here.

Step 2In the Transparency palette, setthe Opacity to 25%.



ELEMENT 11 Creating the Background Image

Step 4Select the Type tool and type,“2002 SPRING & SUMMERFASHION ILLUST.”

Step 5Follow the same steps to complete the text written atthe bottom of the image asshown here.



Step 1 Create a new layer and move itto the very bottom of theLayers palette. Name the layer“title.” Select the Type tooland press Command/Ctrl + T toopen the Character palette.After specifying the font andfont size, type in the word“Opinion.”

Step 2Select the Line Segment tooland specify the Stroke color inthe Color palette as shownhere. To make a horizontalline, hold down the Shift keyand draw in the line below thetext.

Step 3Choose Effect, Stylize, AddArrowheads. In the AddArrowheads dialog box, setStart to None and End to 21,and then click OK.



ELEMENT 12 Creating a Simple Title

Step 3Create a new layer and name it“flower.” Move the flowerlayer to the very top of theLayers palette and then lock allthe other layers.

Step 4Choose Window, BrushLibraries, Other Library and inthe Select a library to opendialog box, follow the file folder path leading to theIllustrator 10 program andload the Flowers.ai file fromthe Floral folder. In theFlowers palette, select theGardenia brush and drag itonto the image. Note: If youdon’t have the flower brushinstalled on your computer,choose another brush.

Step 5Choose Windows, Symbols toopen the Symbols palette (Shift+ F5). Select the Gardeniabrush from the image anddrag it onto the Symbolspalette to save it as a symbol.



Step 1Unlock the background layerand change the backgroundcolor as shown here.

Step 2Set the Opacity to 40% in theTransparency palette.

Step 7Select the Symbol Shifter toolfrom the toolbox to arrangethe symbols evenly throughoutthe image.

Step 8Select the Symbol Scrunchertool to create natural spacingbetween the symbols. Clickingon the symbol will decreasethe space between the symbolsand clicking on the symbolwhile pressing the Option/Altkey will increase the spacebetween the symbols.



Step 6In the Symbols palette, selectthe symbol you will use to fillin the background. Double-clicking on the Symbol Sprayertool will open the SymbolismTools Option dialog box. In theSymbolism Tools Option dialogbox, configure the propertiesas shown here. The mouse cur-sor will change into a sprayer.Click to spray the symbolthroughout the image.



Step 2The image also appears slightlyawkward because the symbolsare facing the same direction.In order to naturally alter thedirection of the symbols, selectthe Symbol Spinner tool fromthe toolbox. Click and drag onthe symbols to change theirdirection.

Step 3Specify the Fill color as shownhere. Select the Symbol Stainertool and double-click it toopen the Symbolism ToolsOptions dialog box. Make theconfigurations as shown here.



Step 1There is no rhythm in theimage because the symbolobjects are the same size.Select the Symbol Sizer toolfrom the toolbox and click thesymbol object to increase thesize. Clicking on the symbolswhile holding down theOption/Alt key will reducetheir size.



ELEMENT 14 Creating a Spectacular Background Using the Symbol Feature II

Step 5Similar to the previous steps,specify the color in the Colorpalette as shown here and usethe Symbol Stainer tool to create a gorgeous flower background.

Step 6You will now add some trans-parency to emphasize portionsof the image. Double-click theSymbol Screener tool to openthe Symbolism Tools Optionsdialog box. Make the configu-rations shown here and thenclick OK. Click on the flowersto lighten them.



Step 4It is difficult to create a trulymagnificent image using onlyone color. Use the SymbolStainer tool to vary the color. Anatural gradient will appearwhere you click.





Step 7The Symbol Screener tool creates strong and light areasin the image to make theentire image come alive.Clicking on the symbols whileholding down the Option/Altkey will make them darker. Tocreate a slowly fading effect,make the symbols in the upperportion of the image lighter.

Step 8The flowers take away fromthe main point of the image,which is fashion. In the Layerspalette, drag the flower layerto the very bottom to create asoft, yet splendid, background.
