A study on Relevant Health hazard Incidents inTrivandrum

Introductiony Environment, an integral part of human life.

y E very component of earth has its own type of health

hazards.y Health hazards classified into 3 types:

air, water, land pollution.

y Under these circumstances, these types of studies

become relevant.



Residential Health Hazardsy Residential area covers 2/3rd of Trivandrum city.

y Regions comprises of a mixed population in aspects of

socio-economic conditions & dietary habits.y Areas chosen:

Kesavadasapuram, Chalai & Fort area

Chengalchulla, Thampanoor.



Kesavadasapuramy Indoor air pollution from Bio fuels not a problem,

since LPG is used.

y People here are non-vegetarian, & heavily dependenton Fast Food.

y Main diseases faced in these areas are cardiacproblems, obesity, diabetes, etc.

y Here dust problem & solid waste problem are not assevere as in commercial zone.

Cont..y Difficulty in household garbage's.

y But reduced after arrival of kudumbasree, an initiative

to dispose waste.y The burning of dioxin like compounds(DLC) may

cause diabetes & other health related problems.



2.Chengalchullay Its a slum area situated around 2 Km away from

Thampanoor.

y Congested area,y Less educated,

y Daily wagers,

y Doesn't have any regular source of income.

Problems faced by local people:y Problem of availability of water.

y Peoples facing problems of social sanitations.

y Children's are facing from various deficiency diseases.y Lack of proper waste management causing widespread

of mosquitos.

Suggestions for chengalchullay Providing more funds for building more sanitation

facilities.

yProviding nutritious food to children's of age below 12

years.

y By cleaning nearby ponds & rivers regularly , thus notallowing sewage water to enter into these rivers.

y Employing more workers for making surroundingsneat & tidy.



Other Relevant Residential Areasy Places include chalai, fort area, bus & railway

station(Thampanoor area).

yMost people are middle class or lower middle class,

with average literacy.

y Environmental problems noticed here are Solid wastedisposal, waste water stagnation, congested houses.

y Vehicular exhaust, & dust from new construction of bus stand is also a bane to the nature.

Industrial Health Hazards:y It means health hazards related to industries

y When the industry causes any hazards to the living

being in and around the industry, then we say it asindustrial health hazards.



Vilappilsala Areay Due to fast development of Urbanization, the waste

generated from urban areas became a problem.

yFor which local governing bodies found a place called

Vilappilsala.

y Waste treatment plant, setup at 15 Km to east of thecapital. On Vilappilsala panchayath.

Cont.y The foul-smelling leach ate water is drained into

chevulloor thodu, from there it joins meenampalli

thodu, which in turn empties into river Karamana.



The park like scene seen in the picture is the place where waste was previously dumped.



Facts regarding Vilappilsalay Previously waste treatment plant was managed by

Poabson Group, now by Trivandrum corporation.

Corporation sprays inoculum on temporary dumping yards to avoid foul smell.

y Bio-fertilizer produced here is given to FACT formarketing in open market.



Problems faced by peopley Tremendous increase in house Flies.

y Well water, not good for drinking, contaminated.

y Smell of waste material is intolerable.y Due to factory there has been increase in stray dogs.

y Market value for land has decreased.

y Marriage market has also decreased.

y Respiratory problems like asthma, tuberculosis, etc.

y Children's having Diarrhea, cough ,sneezing, frequentomitting tendencies.

y Problem of sound pollutions, during conversionprojects.



Suggestionsy Government must take more interest in waste factory

related issues

Major suggestion put forward by them is aboutcorrupted political leaders.

y There must be uniform timing for disposal of wastes.

y The factory must properly utilize the grants & funds

provided by Government.

Travancore Titanium Product(TTP)y Another major region for study is coastal regions of

Trivandrum(shankumugham, Vettucaud, Veli)

y

TTP a public Ltd Company under state public sector with 80.94% shares.

y The main reason for saying TTP a commercial healthhazards is because the company is producing 4 Crore

worth toxic effluences/day.



Some key findings regarding TTPy More than 1000 people works on daily wages basis.

y In 1997, Kerala Govt approved 200 Crores for proper

waste management, as a result machineries werepurchased, but till date its not installed.

y Marine resources in coastal region have diminished.

y E very year 20-30 people are dying due to health

hazards caused by TTP.

Cont....y Smokes discharged is making the area polluted.

y Many residential houses are situated near waste

effluent discharging point.y The respiratory diseases includes, Tuberculosis,

wheezing, coughing, hyper activity of respiratory canal.



ConclusionThe present study has shown that each demographic

zone has its own environmental problems, as reflected inspecific diseases.

y In the industrial zone, air pollution related respiratory problems are of a high order.

y In the commercial zone cardiac and vector bornediseases, related to environmental hazards like waste water

stagnation, dust and solid waste problem, are high.y residential zone diseases like cardiac problems and obesity,

related to their dietary habits are reported to dominate.
