Mostoftheofficesandlaboratoriesofthedepartment'sgraduateresearchandteachingfacultyarehousedinFunchessHall,CaryHall,thePhysiologyBuilding,andtheRouseLifeScienceBuilding.TheAuburnUniversityHybridomaFacilityisavailableformonoclonalantibodies.Inaddition,BiologicalElectronMicroscopyImagingFacility,PCRandSequencing,andGLCspectrometryandN MRfacilitiesareavailable.Acooperatingmarinelaboratory,theDauphinIslandSealab,islocatedonDauphinIsland,AL.TheUniversityholdsmembershipstotheAlabamaMississippiMarineConsortium,whichenablesstudentstoworkattheGulfCoastResearchLaboratoryinOceanSprings,Mississippi,andtotheOrganizationforTropicalStudies,whichoperatestheLaSelvaFieldStationinCostaRica.Thedepartmentmaintainsextensivecollectionsofanimalspecimensforteachingandresearch.Aherbarium,researchgreenhouses,andgrowthchambers
arealsoavailable.Studentshavecompleteaccesstofacilitiesprovidingstatisticalanalysis,computerprogramming,andmainframecomputercommunication.Thedepartmentmaintainsanoncampusfacilityforhousingresearchcollectionsofanimals,andnumerousotherfacilities,andfieldstudysites.

CoastalMarineEcology
SDSUisrecognizedasamajorPacificcenterforthestudyofcoastalmarineecology.Ourlocalcoastlineshavesomeoftherichestmarinebiodiversityinthenation,andourshoressupporthighrecreationalusage.However,thecoastlineofsouthernCaliforniahasbeenseriouslyaffectedbydevelopmentandbyoverexploitationofmarineresources,andourvaluabletourismindustryisthreatenedbypollution.SanDiegoBayisoneofthemostpollutedinthenation,andtheCityofSanDiegoisstrugglingtobringsewagetreatmentandoceandischargeinlinewithfederallylegislatedrequirements.FivefulltimeEcologyfacultyarecurrentlyengagedinresearchfocusedonproblemsinconservationorrestorationecology.TheprogramhasmadeasubstantialinvestmentinandcontributiontotheunderstandingofthecoastalmarineecologyoftheSanDiegoareathatisunmatchedbyotherlocalinstitutions.TheCoastalmarineecologyissupportedbySDSU'sresearchdivingprogram,HubbsSeaW orldResearchInstitute,andotherdepartmentalresources(seebelow).
EcosystemEcologyandGlobalChange
SDSUhasastronghistoricandcurrentreputationinecosystemecologyandintheresponseofecosystemstoglobalchange.TherearefiveEcologyfacultywhohaveaprimaryinterestinthisarea.Ecosystemecologyandglobalchangeresearchnotonlyinvolveecosystemecologists,butothersinterestedinhowtheirorganismsorprocessescontributetoahigherleveloforganization.SDSUhasaccesstouniqueecosystemsandalandscapegradientfrommountainstotheoceanthroughbothundevelopedanddevelopedhabitat.Thefieldstationsenableustoexploittheseresearchsettingsandmuchofthetechnicalequipmenttoaddressproblemsinglobalchange(largescaleCO2fieldchambers,CO2controlledgrowthchambers),andaccesstoandongoingworkingarrangementswithfacilitiesforremotesensinginGeographyandGeologyareavailable.
