    CoastalMarineEcology

    SDSUisrecognizedasamajorPacificcenterforthestudyofcoastalmarineecology.Ourlocalcoastlineshavesomeoftherichestmarinebiodiversityinthenation,andourshoressupporthighrecreationalusage.However,thecoastlineofsouthernCaliforniahasbeenseriouslyaffectedbydevelopmentandbyoverexploitationofmarineresources,andourvaluabletourismindustryisthreatenedbypollution.SanDiegoBayisoneofthemostpollutedinthenation,andtheCityofSanDiegoisstrugglingtobringsewagetreatmentandoceandischargeinlinewithfederallylegislatedrequirements.FivefulltimeEcologyfacultyarecurrentlyengagedinresearchfocusedonproblemsinconservationorrestorationecology.TheprogramhasmadeasubstantialinvestmentinandcontributiontotheunderstandingofthecoastalmarineecologyoftheSanDiegoareathatisunmatchedbyotherlocalinstitutions.TheCoastalmarineecologyissupportedbySDSU'sresearchdivingprogram,HubbsSeaW orldResearchInstitute,andotherdepartmentalresources(seebelow).

    EcosystemEcologyandGlobalChange

    SDSUhasastronghistoricandcurrentreputationinecosystemecologyandintheresponseofecosystemstoglobalchange.TherearefiveEcologyfacultywhohaveaprimaryinterestinthisarea.Ecosystemecologyandglobalchangeresearchnotonlyinvolveecosystemecologists,butothersinterestedinhowtheirorganismsorprocessescontributetoahigherleveloforganization.SDSUhasaccesstouniqueecosystemsandalandscapegradientfrommountainstotheoceanthroughbothundevelopedanddevelopedhabitat.Thefieldstationsenableustoexploittheseresearchsettingsandmuchofthetechnicalequipmenttoaddressproblemsinglobalchange(largescaleCO2fieldchambers,CO2controlledgrowthchambers),andaccesstoandongoingworkingarrangementswithfacilitiesforremotesensinginGeographyandGeologyareavailable.
