B’NAI TIKVAH VISION STATEMENT

B’nai Tikvah strives to be the center of our Jewish community by celebrating and supporting each other. We welcome all, respecting and embracing the many paths by which individuals seek to express their Jewish identity.

The B’nai Tikvah community supports spiritual growth, lifelong learning, family and adult programs, tikkun olam (healing the world) through social action and connecting with Israel. We create bonds across generations and draw strength from our proud heritage and traditions. Among these traditions is the ability and willingness to adapt in a changing world, to assure a vibrant Jewish community for future generations.

FROM THE PRESIDENTAs we welcome 5779, the first full new year of B’nai Tikvah’s new name and vision, we want to share with new, continuing and prospective members some of the many programs that our congregation offers. There’s a lot more going on than you may know, and this booklet is just a taste — since food’s a huge part of Judaism, what better way to get you involved than to give you a nosh? We invite you to join us as often as you see something that catches your eye: take a class, help heal the world, sing at a weekly or holiday service, have dinner or kiddush with your friends and fellow congregants, read a book and share your thoughts, chat about Judaism and life in several different groups and settings, and so much more.

B’nai Tikvah needs your presence to make all of these activities successful. Bring this booklet home and put it in a place where you can easily refer to it often and where it will remind you that we’re here all year round.

Wishing you and your family a busy and happy new year, and hoping to see you soon,

Sam Evans [email protected]

FROM THE RABBI

As this brochure reflects, B’nai Tikvah is a vibrant, diverse community, and I am proud to be its spiritual leader. We have daily activities that meet the needs of our membership, young and older, as well as groups beyond our walls. There are a dozen committees that advance the mission of our synagogue and Jewish education for all ages and in many forms.

If you are a member already, please partake of this cornucopia of opportunity! And if you are not yet a member, please consider joining us as we forge an inclusive and dynamic future in the South Area.

I’m available to speak with you if you have suggestions or if you want additional information.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL

B’nai Tikvah ’s Religious School strives to make Jewish education a creative and joyous experience for children and families. We hope to inspire each of our students and provide them with the tools through our philosophy of “Learning through Living” to become students of Torah who have the tools to live Jewishly in their family and commu-nity and thereby build a personal relationship with God and Israel.

Our unique two-day a week program on Tuesdays and Saturdays is bolstered by special family programming, community programming and more throughout the year. Students in grades 2-7 meet on Tuesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. The Shorashim (Roots) program for students in grades K-1 meets on Saturday mornings.

B’nai Tikvah ’s Religious School has three main principles:

Personalized: We tailor the learning plans to meet the needs of each individual child. We provide flexibility in what, when, where, and how the student learns. We support parent involvement in the student’s learning and encourage relationships between student, teacher, and parents.

Mastery-based learning: We have 13 areas of study with 5 areas to master within each. We work with students to set goals to reach their own individual level of mastery.

Experiential: At B’nai Tikvah we believe that learning happens through doing. We celebrate real-life Jewish experiences – t’fillah, Shabbat, holidays, tikkun olam, and mitzvot.
