Today's Game Scottish Junior Cup

Tayport v Cumbernauld United

We welcome Cumbernauld United, who play in the McBookie.com Super League First Division , the second tier of the West Region Juniors, back to the Canniepairt for a repeat of the one and only previous meeting of the clubs back in 1992. Tayport shocked their visitors that day with a 7-1 win but we're unlikely to see a scoreline like that this afternoon.

Neither side has set the heather on fire so far this season and the respective managers will be looking for a morale boosting win and a passage into the next round of one of the world's oldest football tournaments, now in its 131styear.

It was a Scottish Cup defeat by Luncarty last season which saw Cumbernauld part company with George Shaw, their manager of only 5 months . Said club chairman George Watson , at the time " results have been poor to say the least and losing to Luncarty was the final straw "

Meadow. Frame succeeded with his initial challenge of steering the club clear from the threat relegation.

The close season gave Frame the opportunity to re-shape his squad and during the close season there were a host of comings and goings as the management team faced the challenge of winning a place in next season's re-structured top tier. In came keeper Jordan Brown (Rob Roy) , defender Paul Murphy (Petershill) , Mark Batchelor (Cumbernauld Colts), Willie Wells (Irvine Meadow) , Martin Shiels (St Rochs) , veteran striker Robbie Winters and most recently another striker, Fraser Team from Rutherglen Glencairn .

Recent results have not been great but three of the four defeats in their five games have been inflicted by teams currently sharing the top of the league. Their win , 5-4 at Darvel, is the Ayrshire side's only defeat to date.

Tayport repeated their Houdini act of last season versus Haddington on Saturday past when they again came from behind with only a few minutes remaining to collect full points. The profligacy in front of goal, however, and the errors which almost gift wrapped the points for the visitors will be of concern to Charlie King but he'll

Cumbernauld moved quickly to fill the have been heartened by the spirit vacancy by appointing Thorniewood shown by his players. To finish on top. United manager Andy Frame (pictured Hopefully an entertaining game is in above) as the new No.1 at Guy's prospect.

What's the Manager saving? -the view from the dugout

Good afternoon and welcome again to the Canniepairt for this afternoon's Scottish Cup match v Cumbernauld United. The players have had it well drilled into them how important the Scottish Cup is to this club and we hope no stone has been left unturned in our preparation.

Last Saturday at home to Haddington we saw something of a role reversal from the previous week and, as much as it was a horrible way to lose the game at Blackburn, I'm sure we all agree there is also

Lost in France!

no better way to win than with that last minute goal. And for Gaz to have scored, it will go a long way to boost his confidence. Unfortunately big Gregor is missing again this week due to holidays.

From Darren, Patty, Irish and myself, we thank you again for turning out to support us moving forward. It does not go unnoticed. Chavl.ib

A Tayport family on holiday in rural France, Balbec to be precise, this summer had to rub their eyes when, deep in the Normandy countryside, amongst the goats, pigs and hens they came across a 'Williamsons of Gauldry' double decker bus, still sporting its 'Williamsons of Gauldry' livery.

The owner was fitting out the bus for renting as a holiday home. One wonders whether this bus has just never come home from a Continental tour or is it merely one which had been put out to pasture?

Williamsons of Gauldry, now rebranded as Moffat & Williamson, are Tayport FC's away matchday coach supplier and in fact conveyed Tayport FC to Belgium to play in the 70s and 80s - not in a double decker though!

Cumbernauld United, founded in 1964, are based at Guys Meadow Stadium in Cumbernauld, the ninth biggest locality in Scotland with a population of around 52,000. It was the third of Scotland's designated 'New Towns' created in the mid 1950s after East Kilbride and Glenrothes.

Since being promoted as champions from the third tier Central Division 1 in 2010 Cumbernauld have held their own in the West Region McBookie.com Super First Division, peaking with a 4th top spot in 2015.

Cup success has pretty much eluded Cumbernauld over the years with an Evening Times Cup Winners Cup win in 1978 a rare cause for celebration.

When Cumbemauld were last at Canniepairt I---+ t----t- 25 years ago, stri~r Robbie Winters, 43 in a 1----1- couple of months, had just signed for Jim t----t- Mclean at Dundee United, his first professional

Robbie was SPFA young player of the year in 1997, Norway's Premier 1---+

League's POV in 2004. In addition he has amassed numerous winners and I---+

runners-up medals with his array of Senior clubs. He also has a runners-up I---+ 1----t- medal from his time with Pollob. He came on as sub for Pollob v Beith in ,__ __ the 2016 Scottish Junior Cup final and scored with his first touch. It finished 1----1- H and although Robbie netted his penalty , Beith won the shoot-out.

Hats off then to Robbie for his longevity in the game. Ves, he actually has 1---+

~ DUNMORE REPORTS .... ~ Last Saturday, Tayport did unto Haddington what Blackburn had done unto Tayport the previous week.

Having suffered the concession of two late goals to lose the points at New Murrayfield Park, 'Port experienced very different emotions to score twice in the closing stages of the home match against Haddington to nick a morale-boosting win .

In a seesaw of a match, Marc Ogg saw his penalty kick saved by the visiting goalkeeper midway through the first half and Alan Tulleth bent a shot wide of the target, wh ile the Hi-H i had the ir own chances at the other end of t he park.

Just when it looked like the half would end goalless , 'Port opened the scor ing just two minute s before the interval. Dale Reid turned and fired across goal and the ball to fell t o Spanish playmaker Sergio Alvarez and he calmly cut inside a defender and stroked home his first goal of the season .

Early in the second half , a brace from Scott Moffat edged Haddington into the lead . The first was a tap in , on 53 minutes. A defensive mistake allowed Moffat to knock in their second and Tayport were facing a third consecutive defeat .

Thankfully , the introduction of subst itutes Jamie Mackie, Coner Ireland and Jamie Gill sparked Tayport back into life and when Gill's cross reached Dani Sanchez, he controlled the ball and poked in the 84t h minu t e leveller.

Not wish ing to settle for a point , the Canniepairt men continued to push forward. Connor Gray and Craig Sturrock both came close . Then, in the final minute, Dale Reid chased a long ball and cut back for Coner Ireland, whose effort fell for Gary Sutherland and he duly netted to spark scenes of jubilation in the Tayport camp.

CHAIRMAN'S CHAT

A warm welcome to the players and officials of our visitors Cumbernauld United for this 1st round Scottish Cup tie and may I also extend a hearty welcome to the Port Support.

They say football's a funny old game. I commented in last week's programme that we managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory at Blackburn . Last Satur-day we snatched victory from the jaws of defeat!

. .'-I ' .

It's a fact that most goals are scored in the last five minutes of each half of games and the reason for this is mainly down to the lack of concentration, players not being switched on and lack of leadership. These factors all contribute to losing goals within these times. We lost two goals in the last five minutes at Blackburn and two goals early in the second half of last week's game. Strong team mentality, leadership and players taking responsibility can be the difference between success and failure.

This year the club celebrates its 70th anniversary . For 43 years of that time the club played in the amateur ranks then in the year 1990 the committee made the bold decision to join the Junior ranks. Since then the club has been fortunate to have competed in and won every league and cup competition available to it.

I have been fortunate to haver played my part in these successes, none more important than the competition we enter into today. Some have christened it the 'Holy Grail ' and many, many clubs have been in existence for far longer than ourselves and have never tasted the unparalleled achievement of lifting the Scottish Junior Cup . Hopefully our players can realise the importance this competition holds within the club and for our fans.

Someone once said 'a journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step'. Yes, it ' s a long and difficult journey but with desire and determination, anything is achievable. Let's begin that journey this afternoon.
