Welcome to the Belfast Photo Festival 2015 programme of photographic exhibitions and events, brought to you under the theme of ‘Convergence.’ Based on this theme, the festival has been curated with a focus on photography’s convergence with other art forms. The Festival includes work by major inter-national photographers alongside Northern Ireland’s finest photographic talent. In ad-dition you will find a variety of workshops, screenings, tours, master classes, portfolio reviews, and this years signature event – the Iris Colour Photo Park. This celebrates the four year partnership between sponsor Iris Colour and the Festival. Belfast Photo Festival is Northern Ireland’s premier visual arts Festival and the pho-tographic biennial for the island of Ireland, celebrating some of the most exceptional national and international contemporary photography. This event, which has been two years in planning, caters from the enthusiast to the professional. The Festival aims to be inclusive, increase access and widen par-ticipation in photography, provoke thought, discussion, interest, enjoyment of the

medium, and celebrate Northern Ireland’s rich photographic heritage. We hope to inspire the country’s future photographers, artists, and entrepreneurs, offering new, exciting, welcoming, and sometimes challenging experiences to au-diences through the Festival’s programme of events. Through this innovative 2015 programme we believe we have created a unique pho-tographic festival for the UK and Ireland. Having established new channels for cultural exchange within the international photographic community, the city of Belfast has been transformed into a hub for the photographic arts. I would like to thank our volunteers, who without their tenacity the Festival would not have taken place, in particular Orry Robinson and Laura Hagan who have both become integral to the Festival team. Personally I would also like to thank the Festival board for their invaluable help and support. ‘To Camera’, is an exhibition of works that evidence the artist’s action, intervention or performance. Featuring works by artists such as Amanda Coogan, Lorraine Burrell, Tom Lovelace, Ai Wei Wei and Tony Hill, the exhibition offers an insight into a variety of practices that have employed the camera as a witness, as a means of constructing a visual representation or as a means of production, that here fluctuate between the absurd and the mundane.

The Thousand Year Old Boy by Yvette MonaghanIris Colour Photo Park (Writer's square)6–23 June 2015Opening: Saturday 6 June, 7pm

In 2011, some cavers made exciting archaeological discoveries in a cave in the Burren, Co. Clare. A poignant revelation was also made: the skeleton of a child. They were able to extract DNA from the remains. The Archaeologists tested this DNA against 150 children from a local school. One boy was an exact match. It turns out that he lives in a house less than one mile from the cave. The thousand year old boy explores how this ancient place embodies the stories and mythology of one boy and those who have gone before him.

Offshore presents eight Swiss photographers who work around the notion of territory, focusing on constellations where photography crosses the borders of it’s own medium and extends into other artistic forms and disciplines (e.g. collage, painting, sculpture, architecture, graphics design, mass media, pop, forensics, performance and anthropology). The exhibition focuses on these artistic strategies to connect and/or fuse the medium of photography with other artistic media in contemporary Swiss Photography.

Photographer Jordan Hutchings’ new exhibition, Body of Work, maps a history of recording the performance artist as subject, and documenting materials as conceptual indicators. His ongoing presence at performance meetings within Belfast and beyond, has cultivated a powerful link between subject and photographer, enabling him to record fleeting moments of live art, capturing striking images of a community.Curated by Mary Morgan.

Delicate Demons by Satu Haavisto & Aino KannistoRed Barn Gallery4–28 June 2015Opening: Thursday 4 June, 6pm

Delicate Demons is a collaborative effort by Finnish photographers Satu Haavisto and Aino Kannisto. They are making constructed photographs by creating cinematically staged scenes where a woman plays a fictional role specifically designed for her. The models are ordinary women of different ages.

At the heart of the series are the countless different experiences of womanhood with their often contradictory dimensions. The artists are particularly interested in emotions and embodiment, and the photograph as a tool to portray the connections between the two.

The aim for the artist has been to create the kind of public imagery of womanhood that media and entertainment industry does not represent actively, often perceived as too private in an embarrassing or banal way.The Artists were awarded with this exhibition due to the nomination of The Best portfolio 2014 in Backlight Photo Festival on September 2014 in Tampere Finland.

New work by Victor SloanBelfast Print Workshop4–27 June 2015Opening: Thursday 4 June, 7pm

Victor Sloan is internationally recognised for his work relating to the Northern Irish Troubles. His arresting images of the Orange Order Marches and other traditions particular to this place have been exhibited all over the world. His other work with subject matters including the Craigavon and Vietnamese work and his powerful series of images inspired by the abandoned Soviet Military base in Poland are equally powerful images. Sloan’s work extends beyond the Northern Ireland boarders and tackles diverse subjects with universal relevance with this new work focusing on the conflict of Syria.

Interferences by Alberto Maserin Belfast Exposed Photography Gallery4–27 June 2015Opening: Thursday 4 June, 6pm

Interferences is the first exhibition to launch in the Belfast Exposed Futures gallery, a new space dedicated to new talent from Northern Ireland. Over the past two years Alberto Maserin has documented the legacy of a U.S. military base that was established in 1955 during the Cold War in Aviano. The base is still active and for sixty years the values and ideological norms of American culture have interacted with Italian society. The artist examines how the base has infiltrated the culture and physical structure of the town as well as the imaginations of those living in the surrounding area.

Unfathomable by Geert GoirisBelfast Exposed Photography Gallery4–27 June 2015

Geert Goiris’ work encompasses a great diversity of subjects and photographic genres including landscape, architecture, portraiture and the photography of objects. He travels to, and photographs remote and inhospitable places, places which lie at the edges of civilisation – polar regions, deserts, volcanic zones, glaciers, caves, forests and mountains.

Goiris can be seen as a contemporary explorer in search of new landscapes and new ways of seeing. His work argues for unhurried perception, to look closely and slowly, a totally different experience to that offered to us by the dominant culture and by media entertainment. The exhibition at Belfast Exposed will centre on the idea of the 'abyss' and the perception or sense of a limitless, unfathomable space.

DeLorean Print Project by Cyril HattCity Hall Lawn6–30 June 2015Opening: Saturday 6 June, 6pm

Combining sculpture and photography, this commemorative celebratory sculpture is a to scale replica of the Back To The Future DeLorean car. Designed by artist Cyril Hatt and produced in collaboration with 150 former employees of The DeLorean Motor Company, this sculpture is completely made of individual A5 sized photographs printed directly on to brushed sheet metal. Each piece carrying a signature and message from a former employee of the factory.

Members of the public are encouraged to claim one of the photographic panels of the sculpture as an individual work of art. These can be claimed through the Festival website: belfastphotofestival.com

Commissioned by Belfast Photo Festival in partnership with Belfast Exposed and Delorean Hire.net. The sculpture coincides with the 25th Anniversary of the cars unveiling and the year visited in Back To The Future 2.

Metamorphosis is a survey of work by nine image-makers both emerging and established, who are pushing the boundaries of photography. These artists represent a diverse group of curious experimentalists who in their individual ways are propelling the mediums evolution. All of these artists share an interest in the sculptural potential of the photographic print as an object and they illustrate a growing trend within the photographic medium.

Stage of Mind by Lee JeeYoung Naughton Gallery at Queens University4 June–26 July 2015Opening: Thursday 4June, 5pm

The Naughton Gallery is delighted to present Korean artist JeeYoung Lee’s first solo exhibition in the UK and Ireland, Stage of Mind. The exhibition will showcase a selection of her photographic works along with a reproduction of one of her installations, which will be re-built by the artist during a short residency in Belfast.JeeYoung Lee’s work represents the intangible world of feelings and her personal, psychological experiences in everyday life. Taking inspiration not only from life, but also from visual and literary stimuli, Lee creates her inner worlds with infinite patience and preciseness in her studio in Seoul, Korea. Recipient of multiple artistic awards including the Sovereign Art Prize (2012), JeeYoung Lee is one the most promising artist of the younger Korean artistic world. Following the huge success of her first solo show outside of Korea with Opiom Gallery in 2014, her work was seen 500 000 times on Reddit in just 2 days and has been featured in the worldwide media from the USA to China.

The exhibition is curated by Elisa Nocente, organised in collaboration with Opiom Gallery (France) and kindly supported by the Korea Foundation. This exhibition draws on National Museums Northern Ireland’s rich collections of historic photographs to celebrate 175 years of photography in Ireland. It offers a rare opportunity to see original photographic works and equipment, as well as high-quality digital prints from original negatives. All have been chosen to illustrate the range and depth of the collections and the photographers they represent, and to trace the history and development of the medium in Ireland. By emphasizing the themes of people and place, the emergence over time of a distinctly ‘Irish’ genre of public photography is also highlighted.

Artist Talk: Lorenzo VitturiCrescent Arts CentreFriday 5 June, 12pm

Lorenzo Vitturi is an Italian photographer and sculptor who lives and works between London and Milan. Formerly a cinema set painter, Vitturi has brought his experience into his photographic practice, which revolves around playful site- specific interventions at the intersection of photography, sculpture and performance.

In 2013 Vitturi released his first photo-book Dalston Anatomy. The book went on to be shortlisted for both Aperture and Mack's First Book Awards, and was named among the best books of the year by Martin Parr, Erik Kessels, Alec Soth, The New York Times, The Guardian and more. Vitturi has had a solo show at FOAM (Amsterdam) and two live performances at Unseen Photo Fair in Amsterdam and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. In 2014 Vitturi was a finalist at Hyeres International Festival, and had a solo show at The Photographer's Gallery (London).

Artist Talk: Manuel VasonCrescent Arts CentreFriday 5 June, 4pm

Manuel Vason’s artistic practice explores the relationship between photographyand performance, presence and representation. He considers the capturing of a moment as an act of creation, as a ritual towards the illusion of immortality and as an exchange between who is in front and who is behind the camera. The collaborative nature of his practice shapes a unique hybrid art form and generates new vocabularies. Thorsten Brinkmann is best known for his portraits and installations. “When classic portraits meet modern art,” is how his work has been described. He photographs people in a classical manner while substituting parts of their body with objects of common use, ranging from boxes, materials, lamps or even furniture.

His works are represented in renowned collections, such as the Museum der Moderne, Salzburg, the Fotomuseum Winterthur and the Falckenberg Collection, Hamburg.

Previously Celia was Head of Exhibition at the De La Warr Pavilion from 2002 – 2009. She has devised numerous contemporary solo and group exhibitions and major commissions of new work. Celia has been editor and contributing writer for numerous visual art publications including the influential Photoworks Monographs series, co-published by Steidl. She is co-editor of Photoworks Journal, visual art advisor for HOUSE festival and a trustee of Blast Theory.

12pmSean O’Hagan – Photo Editor, the Guardian / the ObserverSean O'Hagan writes about photography for the Guardian and the Observer and is also a general feature writer. He was named interviewer of the year in the British press awards in 2003 for his profiles of footballer Roy Keane and musician Brian Wilson, among others. He is the winner of the 2011 J Dudley Johnston award from the Royal Photographic Society "for major achievement in the field of photographic criticism" for his writing in the Observer and the Guardian.

12.40pmStacey Baker – Photo Editor, The New York Times MagazineThe New York Times Magazine is renowned for its long standing, cutting edge use of photography, both in print and multimedia. Stacey produces weekly shoots for the magazine and has worked with photographers such as; Massimo Vitali, Alec Soth, Paolo Pellergin and Lars Tunbjork. The New York Times magazine has been recognized with many prestigious awards including; World Press Photo, American Photography and the Society of Publication Designers, among others.

2.30pmDarren Harvey Regan – Photographic Artist (uses photography, sculpture, installation)Darren Harvey-Regan is a graduate of the Royal College of Art. His practice circles around photography's interaction with sculpture - the encounter of the two-dimensional with the third - and with processes and works that conflate, confuse or contrast the meeting of these. His work has appeared in exhibitions and publications internationally and is part of the permanent photography collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

Hands are the most expressive part of the human body. They are the first to tangibly communicate sentiments. Trembling Hands is about temporality and persistence, and is informed by research on the notion of belonging. The images move at a pace of 240 frames per second, with the performance choreographed to demonstrate what happens when reality and desire collide. Each scene is closely tied to the concept of grasping. Trembling hands seeks to create the wonder of “looking at a still through slight movements”.

The Festival is delighted to welcome Alec Soth to the 2015 edition, and is hosting a special screening of Somewhere To Disappear, a documentary that follows Soth on a journey of photographic discovery around the United States during his project, Broken Manual.

In order to write a guide on how to disappear in America, Soth embarked on a research trip. We follow him on this search for people who live on the margins of society and find peace as modern day hermits outside the familiar cultural norms.

Directed by Laure Flammarion and Arnaud Uyttenhove, the film captures Soth during the preliminary stages of his project and offers a unique perspective on the individuals within his photographs and shines a new light on the clichés and contradictions of the USA.

The film will be followed by a Q&A with Alec Soth.

Storybooks & Slideshows: Exploring the Narrative Possibilities of PhotographyAlec SothUS Consulate18–19 June 2015, SOLD OUT

While photographs rarely tell linear stories, nearly all photographers are engaged in some form of narrative practice. Whether one is sequensing photographs in a book or presenting slide in front of an audience, important narrative decisions are being made. In this two-day workshop, Alec Soth will work with students to develop and expand their narrative voices as photographers.

After a lecture by Soth on his work as a photographer, publisher and producer of slideshows, students will spend the first day sharing their work and developing a 'story pitch.' From these pitches students will spend the rest of the day and the next morning generating stories. On the second evening, students will present their finished assignments as either storybooks or slideshows.

Alec Soth is a member of the photographic co-operative Magnum Photos.

The Creation of Fictional Imageswith Lorenzo VitturiUlster Museum3–4 June, 9am-6pm

The two-day master-class will be offering an insight into Lorenzo Vitturi's personal way of seeing photography; A medium conceived as a space of transformation where different disciplines merge together with the aim of originating images full of energy and vitality.

The exploration of Lorenzo's practice will be made firstly through the discussion of his own personal experience and eventually with the realisation of a series of sets in which participants will be able to experiment personally the whole process. The attenders will be invited to take photos of external scenes as well as still life in studio where real facts will be mixed with organic elements for the creation of fictional images.

Belfast Photo Festival presents a day of one on one portfolio reviews with Irish, British and International experts. The purpose of these reviews are to provide both photographers and artists working with photography the opportunity to meet one on one with professional from the UK, Europe and America. Through these reviews participants can expect to gain vital feedback on their artistic development, expand their professional networks and exchange ideas. Each review session will last 25 minutes, PLEASE arrive on time for sessions.

The Festival has carefully selected international experts in the field of photography and art from around the world to review for one day. (Reviewer Bios can be viewed through the Festival website) The invited reviewers are looking for new, emerging talent and works by established artists utilizing photography. Whilst the purpose of the review is not guaranteed to deliver exhibitions, publications or representation, these are potential outcomes.
