GENERAL INFORMATION SXL is the centre piece for power management, amplifier control and monitoring. It works embedded in a LAN network, over the Internet or as stand-alone unit with manual front panel control. Up to 16 amplifier channels can be connected to one SXL unit. The 16 amplifier channels can be combined of two-channel, four-channel and eight-channel amplifiers. The controlled amplifiers are connected to the SXL unit with the system bus based on the I2C protocol. To connect the amplifiers to the SXL control unit ribbon cable with the appropriate connectors is used. The length of the connection cable should not be more than two meters. Therefore the amplifiers and the corresponding SXL control unit should be mounted within the same installation rack. The SXL has 16 non-volatile scene memories (1 basic setup and 15 configurable memories), automatic detection of connected amplifiers, non-polarity logical inputs and high power relay outputs. SXL monitors amplifiers output voltage, current, load impedance and power. The SXL also provides effortless communication with the digital signal processing inside the intelligent XR power amps. Up to 15 complex scenarios may be switched by the single push of a button. All significant events are logged and can be sent as a syslog and/or e-mail message via the Internet for seamless control. Two groups of parameters are handled on the SXL: Controls and Detectors: Controls manage the behaviour of connected amplifiers (e.g. Standby, etc.). Detectors inform and indicate about the actual state of the physical or logical features of the selected amplifier or amplifier channel (e.g. temperature, etc.). Controls are ‘Read’ and ‘Write’, Detectors are ‘Read’ only.

To put SXL to SERVICE MODE, press the UP and DOWN key concurrently until a short beep can be heard and on the upper right corner of the LCD display “sm1” is visible. By pressing the left and right keys, the PARAMETER GROUPS can be changed and are indicated on the LCD display. Go to “SXLSTAT”. After reaching the PARAMETER GROUP “SXLSTAT”, the individual parameters can be accessed by pressing the up and down keys. After getting the parameter “IP”, ENTER must be pressed. Now the IP address can be changed by using the UP and DOWN keys. Using the RIGHT and LEFT keys the next IP number can be accessed. After setting all four IP numbers, the settings should be saved by pressing ENTER again. The same procedure must be made to change the SUBMASK (MS) settings. If you need to change the GATEWAY (GW) and Authorized Server (AS) settings, these parameters can be changed in the same way. To go back from the SERVICE MODE to the USER MODE press the UP and DOWN keys concurrently again. Attention: After changing the IP address, the unit must be switched off and on again to make the settings permanent.

Communication Modes The communication modes will be indicated by: <w1> <w2> <w*> <rw> (w = write, r = read) The modes are selected by pressing the button ‚Cancel’/’Mode’ on the front panel of the unit. Pressing the button will switch through the individual modes one by one (pressing the button ones enters the mode <w1>, pressing the button twice enters the mode <w2> and so on). <w1> In this mode only the writable and controllable parameters are shown, the digit 1 means that only the actually chosen amplifier respectively channel will be changed. <w2> Equivalent with <w1>, but by changing a channel, also the appropriate stereo channel will be

changed. <w*> All amplifiers respectively channels will be changed simultaneously. Used for instance to set all

amplifiers into standby. <rw> Equivalent to the mode <w1>, but also all parameters (write and read only) are shown. For instance

the AC status, etc.

Additional Information !loc The SXL is controlled via the Ethernet network. Local access is locked and not available. This status

is automatically set as soon as the unit continuously communicates over the Ethernet. !sm1 Service Mode Level 1. The service mode is used to change basic settings like the IP address (see

With the SXL Manager the network can be searched for connected SXL units (Menu: Devices). As soon as SXL uits are available on the network, they show up in the very left window of the software with the IP address and (by double clicking) with all amplifiers connected to the unit. This way the entire SXL network can be checked very easily. A missing SXL in the list in the very left window indicates a communication problem with this unit. In this case approach the unit directly and check the hardware connections and the network settings on the unit locally. By clicking on one SXL in the very left window, the parameters of all connected amplifiers will be displayed in the right large window. The signal levels are displayed live in the level bars and faders, mute buttons etc. can be accessed online. Different to the web interface, here all parameters and level changes are executed directly online without the need to execute the data transfer separately by pressing the ‘Set’ button on the web interface.

.

LOGICAL INPUTS OF THE SXL The SXL is furthermore equipped with four galvanic isolated logical inputs, which can be read with the control software in the control computer. The inputs are active (ON status) as soon as a voltage of +5V to +24V is supplied. The polarity does not matter. These logical inputs are accessible over PHOENIX connectors and are located at the back panel of the SXL. The inputs can be set to recall stored preset. For this they must be enabled by the “CfgByInput” parameter from the SXLSTAT parameter group (See chapter ‘Manual Control and Monitoring from the Front Panel’).

Page 15: Programmable Control Interface SXL - Egloospds14.egloos.com/pds/200902/19/80/SXL_Manual.pdfProgrammable Control Interface BITTNER SXL - Installation & Operations Manual ... EQ.1..10.Bypass

RELAY OUTPUTS OF THE SXL The SXL is equipped with four relay outputs also located at the rear panel of the SXL. These outputs are designed for a maximum load of 10A @ 240VAC. Three pins are available for each relay: C (common), NO (normally opened), NC (normally closed). The relays are programmable with the RELAY MATRIX (see Web Interface Control).

PAGING INPUT A paging signal (0 dBu) can be applied to the SXL that is remotely switched to any of the connected amplifier channels in a priority mode. Emergency calls and paging signals can be easily supplied to the sound reinforcement system using this feature. The PHOENIX audio connector is located at the rear panel of the SXL.

MONITOR OUTPUTS Some of the BITTNER amplifier models have additional audio outputs to monitor the loudspeaker signals (0 dBu). These outputs are integrated into the ribbon cable connector on the rear panel of the amplifier. The outputs represent the loudspeaker power outputs, divided by a resistor network. Over the software of the control computer the individual amplifier channel can be routed and switched to this monitor outputs. The monitor output of each channel can be only activated via SXL command and is switched to the two PHOENIX monitor outputs connector at the back of SXL unit. XR models have stereo monitor outputs with adjustable gain and polarity, while XRDSP models have mono monitor output connected to the SXL unit. Any of 16 channels can be monitored one after another.

EXTERNAL MONITOR INPUTS An external signal (0 dBu) can be applied to every of the 2 SXL monitor buses via PHOENIX audio connector placed at the rear panel of the SXL.

FIRMWARE UPGRADE A necessary firmware update can be accomplished in two ways:

1) Upload with SXLU: To upgrade the SXL unit, the SXL software package must be installed to a PC computer within the network. The SXL must be accessible by this computer and the new firmware file “sxl ---.bit” must be available on the computer. Now on the computer open the software program “SXL Upgrade Utility”. After the program is connected to the SXL double click on “Firmware Version” in the right-hand window and just upload the firmware.

2) Upload directly via Command Line To upload the new firmware directly without installed SXL software, open the DOS window on the connected computer. Type in the following command line: “ TFTP -i “ followed by the IP address followed by: “ put sxl----.bit ” (sxl file with version number). For instance: TFTP -i 172.16.48.120 put sxl123.bit The upgrade file will be uploaded immediately. ATTENTION: Power-down and power-up the unit or use the Restart feature in the SXL Upgrade Utility or in the SXL web interface. The new firmware is then installed and ready to go.
