ABSTRAC

In the last decades, the importance of getting real time

ionospheric data to be used for space weather purposes has

greatly increased. For this reason since 80s much work has been

performed to develop computer programs able to automatically

scale the ionograms giving as output the standard ionospheric

characteristics along with an estimate of the vertical electron

density prole. This paper describes the main characteristics of

Autoscala, a software that has been developed in the last fteen

years at the Istituto Nazionale di Geosica e Vulcanologia to

automatically scale vertical ionograms. Advantages and

disadvantages of the algorithm will be discussed, as well as the

outstanding problems that should be faced to improve more and

more the reliability of the output. Results of comparisons

between the outputs of Autoscala and ARTIST (the autoscaling

system developed by the University of Lowell, Massachusetts,

USA) after processing ionograms recorded at the Rome

ionospheric station will be shown. An example of Autoscala

processing on ionograms recorded at Sao Jose dos Campos during

March 2004 will be also shown.
