However: a) sitting fees for certification exams in the field are quite high; b) none of these certifications are strictly required for entry-level positions in the field, and employers do not expect applicants for these positions to hold these certifications; b) the usual practice is for our students to obtain employment with a local firm who

Personnel (Faculty and Staff) (Click the Yes or No gray box to select your answer.) Is the number of personnel adequate to support your program area?

☐ YES ☒ NO

If “NO”, explain below. The number of full-time faculty fell by one when an instructor left the college in 2016 and was not replaced. Enrollment in department courses has increased sharply since then (by 11% over the previous year in the current semester) and staffing is not adequate to cover all the sections the department needs to offer. We are in great need of an additional instructor with IT qualifications.

Do personnel possess all specialized skills or credentials required to support the program area

☒ YES ☐ NO

If “NO”, explain below.

Is there proper documentation (transcripts, etc.) on file to show?

☒ YES ☐ NO

If “NO”, explain below.

If “YES”, explain below.

On file with HR Are faculty and staff evaluated on an annual basis by the appropriate Dean or supervisor?

☒ YES ☐ NO Does the evidence exist to show that faculty members teaching in this program have involved themselves in in-service training and other professional development?

☒YES ☐ NO If “NO,” please explain:

CCC Academic Program Review Page 11

Are there unmet needs for professional development among personnel in this instructional program?

☒ YES ☐ NO If “YES”, explain below.

Newly hired faculty will need training to acquire certifications in fields for which we need additional staffing.

Facilities, Equipment, and Budget (Click the Yes or No box to select your answer.) Briefly describe the facilities occupied by your instructional program. (i.e. classrooms, offices, labs, etc.) Some classroom/labs are equipped with desktop computers. Most, however, are now equipped with thin client/VDI terminals. All have a video projector with either large-screen displays or a traditional screen. Two rooms are equipped with video collaboration systems. Rooms are adequate in size and amenities. Offices are typical for the college, with a desk and usual furniture. All faculty have a college-issued laptop computer. These facilities are adequate. Are the facilities adequate to support the mission of your program for day and evening classes, if applicable?

☐ YES ☒ NO

The configuration of some of the classrooms on the Huntsville campus limits the utility of the rooms. In all rooms there, the network and power cables lie in a chase underneath the concrete floor and enter the room through holes bored in the concrete. This creates an environment with a neat appearance when the room is empty, but eliminates flexibility, and given the suboptimal layout of some of the rooms (particularly HSV1126), teaching a lab-based class is hampered by the inaccessibility of student workstations. A redesign and rearrangement of the room is necessary.

Briefly describe current equipment used by your program and indicate whether it is adequate or inadequate.

Equipment used by the program consists of student computer workstations, teacher stations in each classroom, a network server lab on each campus, other dedicated servers, and old computers used in computer repair classes. Student workstations: Most of these are not adequate to the task. a) The thin client/VDIs used as student workstations are paired with insufficient bandwidth which creates unacceptable latency problems; the labwork in CIS courses is far more demanding of computer resources than assignments in a typical general education course. These machines are also prone to unpredictable glitches and lost connections which create problems in class. One lab in particular (Computer Repair Lab, HSV1123) was recently re-equipped with thin clients and the demands placed on those machines by the courses taught in that room vastly exceed the ability of the equipment to deliver. That room must be re-equipped with desktop computers at once. All other labs need to be re-equipped with desktop computers at the next upgrade. b) Some of the classrooms (HSV1126 & 1129) have outdated (hence slow) desktop computers that need to be replaced. The current proposal is for these to be replaced in the 2019-2020 budget; that needs to happen.

Page 13: PROGRAM REVIEW PROCEDURE · 2019-03-12 · Calhoun Community College . A.A.S. (Career/Technical) Academic Program Review . The academic program review process at Calhoun Community

CCC Academic Program Review Page 13

c) While otherwise functional, the student computers in NR 102 (Cybersecurity lab) need additional random access memory and larger hard drives equivalent to those recently installed in HSV1126. Teacher stations: Adequate, but problems remain from this year’s reimaging of the stations, which was done by IT in a haphazard and uncoordinated way resulting in several different images instead of one, as planned. Network servers: The Netlab+ equipment on both campuses needs to be replaced with equipment compatible with the cloud-based system that Netlab+ is moving to. Other dedicated servers: Adequate Old computers used for repair classes: Adequate

Are additional facilities or equipment required to support the program?

☐ YES ☒ NO Is so, please list and explain.

Does the institution operate and maintain physical facilities that are adequate to serve the needs of this educational program?

☒ YES ☐ NO Does the institution take reasonable steps to provide a healthy, safe, and secure environment for this educational program?

☒ YES ☐ NO Are the physical facilities (classrooms, laboratories, etc.) accessible to students with disabilities? If no, please identify below what is needed to make your area accessible.

☒ YES ☐ NO ☐ N/A

Is the instructional equipment used in this program similar to that used in the workplace or at a higher level of instruction?

☒ YES ☐ NO ☐ N/A Is the budget information available to program heads?

☒ YES ☐ NO

Is adequate financial support available to meet the needs of this program? ☐ YES ☒ NO

If “NO”, please explain.

Funds for many of these improvements will have to be obtained through grants, if available, given our current college budget constraints. Much of this consists of replacement and upgrades and hence cannot be funded by Perkins awards.
