Physical therapy involves managing movement dysfunction and enhancing physical function and ability. This is achieved by restoring, maintaining, and promoting optimal physical function and optimal quality of life as it relates to movement and health. PTAs are expected to collect data and implement interventions within the PT's plan of care for patients of all ages with cardiopulmonary, musculoskeletal, neurological, and integumentary diagnoses. This is done to help prevent onset, progression, symptoms, and/or functional limitations that may result. This information is communicated to the supervising PT, both verbally and written. This program is nationally accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Physical Therapy Education of the American Physical Therapy Association, 1111 North Fairfax St., Alexandria, VA 22314-1488; (703) 706-3245. Students working toward admission into a Health Sciences Program are required to declare General Studies in Pre-Health Sciences degree as their major until they are officially accepted into a program. Admission to the College does not guarantee admission to a specific health science program of study as these programs have additional requirements that must be met. Career Information Physical therapy personnel are needed in hospitals of all types, rehabilitation centers, outpatient clinics, home health, schools, and nursing homes. Clinics and community health agencies also offer employment opportunities. Texas requires a passing score on the national licensure exam after graduation in order to practice as a PTA. Upon applying to take the licensing examination, the graduate will have to answer questions about his/her drug, alcohol, psychiatric, and/or conviction history for determination of eligibility to take the national licensing exam.
