This much-anticipated documentary spotlighting the restoration of Rochester’s only Frank Lloyd Wright house on East Boulevard premieres September 20. Tune in and learn how the owners, Fran Cosentino and Jane Parker, acquired the Boynton House, and how they worked to restore it to its original beauty, using materials and processes that Wright himself intended. The history of the house, and that of its original owner Mr. Edward Boynton are told by many experts including Jean France, Boynton Historian and Architectural Scholar; Carol Boynton Atwood, descendent of the Boynton Family; Eric Norden, owner of Eric Norden Restorations; and John E. Page, owner of Bero Architecture. The Landmark Society’s Executive Director Wayne Goodman also talks about the importance of preserving this national treasure. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Boynton House: The Next Hundred Years is a co-production of WXXI Public Broadcasting, Fran Cosentino, and Jane Parker. To watch a trailer, visit: WXXI.org/boyntonhouse.

TAKE A TOUR OF THE STATION, ENJOY FUN FAMILY ACTIVITIES, & GO PUBLIC WITH WXXI AS WE WELCOME IN THE COMMUNITY!
DEAR FRIENDS,I hope you enjoy our new-and-improved WXXI Program Listings guide this month! We’ve added eight color pages so we can share more of what’s happening at our station, on air, and at the Little Theatre with you. All WXXI members will receive this first issue. If you’ve already been receiving the Program Listings in the mail, you’ll receive this in its place every month. If you don’t usually get this in the mail, you can request it by calling our Membership Department at (585) 258-0200. Remember, if you get our online version, we’ll continue to send it to you that way unless you call to request this printed version. I hope you find the improved Listings more informative and user friendly.
This month marks the premiere of our newest television production, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Boynton House: The Next Hundred Years. WXXI continues to be the leader in local documentaries and The Next Hundred Years is certain to generate a renewed interest in one of Rochester’s architectural masterworks and rekindle pride within our community. Be sure to tune in to WXXI-TV/HD Thursday, September 20 at 8 p.m., for the television premiere!
Adding these additional pages gives us the opportunity to share more information with you, such as an exciting upcoming event: WXXI is bringing NPR’s Diane Rehm to Rochester on November 16th. We will be holding a special luncheon with her at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center — and, as those who attended our last event with Diane will attest, it’s not to be missed! Ticket information will be coming shortly, but be sure to circle November 16 on your calendar!
With our new affiliation with the Little Theatre, we have the opportunity to host more screenings, talkbacks and special events than ever before. This month, we’ll kick off a new season of Community Cinema, a series of free screenings featuring films from the Emmy Award-winning PBS series Independent Lens, and we’re hosting them at The Little. (You can read more about the premiere film, Half the Sky, on page 4.)
Finally, you’re invited to join us for our WXXI Open House on Saturday, September 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. You’ll have a chance to tour our studios, meet WXXI radio and TV hosts, shake paws with the Big Red Dog, and much more. It runs simultaneously with the Greentopia Festival, so the High Falls district will have lots for everyone to do that day. I look forward to seeing you there!
Best Regards,

DOC MARTIN NEWS!For all you DOC MARTIN fans, we’d like to let you know that the popular Britcom will start shooting series 6 next year, which means it will be ready for broadcast in the U.S. in 2014. Martin Clunes, who stars as Dr. Martin Ellingham was recently interviewed by Radio Times. In the interview Clunes said, “[Filming starts] next year and I can’t wait to go back there. [The new series] will be interesting because Louisa and the doctor are finally going to marry, I think. But I don’t want to give too much away!”
If you’re not familiar with quirky series, DOC MARTIN features the brash, brilliant Dr. Martin Ellingham, who was once a renowned London surgeon, until a sudden phobia leaves him paralyzed at the sight of blood. Leaving his old life behind, Ellingham departs for his childhood town of Portwenn in Cornwall, where his terse manner leads to some tense—and hilarious—encounters with the quiet community. You can catch episodes from the early seasons on Saturdays at 4 p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD.
DIANE REHMIS COMING TOROCHESTER!WXXI is bringing the host of NPR’s “The Diane Rhem Show” to the Rochester Riverside Convention Center for a special luncheon on Friday, November 16. Ticket information will be coming soon! Save the date!

BROADWAY OR BUSTSUNDAYS, SEPTEMBER 9, 16 AND 23 AT 8 P.M.
This documentary series tracks the real-life stories of America’s top high school musical performers, vying in the ultimate competition to find the nation’s best young theater stars. Part competition, part performance, and part non-fiction drama, the event starts in regional theatrical programs, where judges around the country select the best performers in the country. The 60 finalists then descend on Broadway, where they plunge into the eye of the theatrical storm for one intense week of rehearsals, coaching, mentoring and cut-throat competition. After an intense final audition, finalists are selected, and these “best of the best” American high school performers take part in the grand finale of the week, the competition for The National High School Musical Theatre Awards (a.k.a. The Jimmy Awards).

CALL THE MIDWIFESUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 30 AT 8 P.M.
This moving, intimate, funny, and true-to-life series, based on the best-selling memoirs of the late Jennifer Worth, tells colorful stories of midwifery and families in London’s East End in the 1950s. Jenny Lee, a young woman raised in the wealthy English countryside, has chosen to become a nurse and now, as a newly qualified midwife, has gone to work in the poorest area of the city. Attached to an order of nursing nuns at Nonnatus House, Jenny is part of a team of women who minister to expectant mothers, many of whom give birth at home in appalling conditions. The drama follows Jenny as she meets her patients and learns to love the people who live in the East End.

GREAT PERFORMANCES WAGNER’S RING CYCLE
Experience Wagner’s complete Ring cycle as the composer meant it to be presented. Robert Lepage’s acclaimed new production of Der Ring des Nibelungen is preceded by the broadcast of award-winning filmmaker Susan Froemke’s documentary Wagner’s Dream, which chronicles the backstage story of the creation of this ambitious new staging of the cycle. The operas – Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried and Götterdämmerung follow Tuesday through Friday evening.
This is the third time a complete Ring cycle has aired on PBS. In 1983, Great Performances aired Patrice Chereau’s production of the Ring conducted by Pierre Boulez from the Bayreuth Festival, and in 1990, Live from the Met (the precursor of Great Performances at the Met) presented Otto Schenk’s Metropolitan Opera production, conducted by James Levine.
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 10 THROUGH FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14 AT 9 P.M.

*9/3 - Full hour PREMIERE of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood *9/22 from 11a-12:30p - Frank Lloyd Wright’s Boynton House: The Next Hundred Years
With 1.3 million students dropping out of high school every year, the need for an in-depth examination into
this crisis is crucial. That’s why WXXI is dedicated to building awareness of the national and local issues
that have led to this alarming dropout rate and to help our community find solutions to ensure a greater
number of graduates in the future.
The centerpiece of this initiative is FRONTLINE’s Dropout Nation, airing Tuesday, September 25 at 10
p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD. The special examines the dropout crisis through the stories of students struggling to
stay in school – and the school administrators who are working against the odds to keep them there.
In addition, WXXI is joining with PBS and CPB to declare September 22 American Graduate Day and
will broadcast seven hours of special programming on the dropout rate and how to keep kids in school.
Beginning at 1 p.m., WXXI-TV/HD, WXXI-World, and City 12 presents half-hour segment featuring special
celebrity guests, relevant spokespeople and compelling stories from students. The last three hours of
the marathon (from 4-7pm) will finish up on WXXI-World and City 12 (WXXI-TV/HD will resume regular
programming at 4 p.m.).
Leading up to the premiere of Dropout Nation, WXXI News and Innovation Trail will file reports on the
subject. For a complete list of programming, visit WXXI.org/grad.

LEWEIGHT OF THE NATIONMONDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 7P.M., FREE
In the United States, 68 percent of adults age 20 and older are overweight or obese, while 31.7% of the nation’s children and adolescents ages two to 19 are overweight or obese. As part of its effort to help combat the obesity epidemic in our community, WXXI and the Little Theatre are hosting a screening of the HBO documentary The Weight of the Nation: Children in Crisis on Monday, September 17 at 7 p.m., followed by a discussion with local pediatricians and providers working on the obesity issue.
Weight of the Nation features real-life stories and interviews with leading experts and with individuals and families struggling with obesity. The series spotlights the facts and myths of this urgent public health issue, showing how obesity affects the health of the nation and cripples the health care system – and what individuals and communities can do.
The Weight of the Nation screening is sponsored by the Greater Rochester Health Foundation and is a presentation of HBO and the Institute of Medicine (IOM), in association with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and in partnership with the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation and Kaiser Permanente. This event is made possible with support from the Greater Rochester Health Foundation and Be A Healthy Hero.
As part of the Fringe Festival, a four-day celebration of the performing and visual arts in the heart of Rochester’s East End, the Little Theatre is pleased to present poetry performances, music, films, and other special events September 20-22. Listed are events featured in Theatre 1, but there’s plenty more happening in the Little Café. To learn more, visit thelittle.org.

If you travel down Pitkin Street — coming off the Inner Loop towards East Ave — you will be greeted with a brand new, vibrant piece of art on the back of the Little Theatre. The mural, entitled “See the Forest for the Trees”, is part of the ongoing WALL|THERAPY project conceived by Rochester’s Ian Wilson. WALL|THERAPY is public community-level intervention using mural art as a vehicle to address a collective need for inspiration. Artists say their work is different from graffiti because they get permission from building owners first.
The Little was approached by 1975 Gallery owner Erich Lehman on behalf of WALL|THERAPY to donate the space at the back of the Little Theatre 3 and be part of the project which also includes pieces on Troup Street Park, at the Public Market, plus others throughout the city. The artists for the Little Theatre mural were the Spanish-born, Germany-raised twin duo How and Nosm who began the piece at 7 A.M. on Saturday, July 21 and completed it at 9 P.M. on Sunday. You can get a better look at “See the Forest for the Trees” by visiting the Little Café and walking through the back doors out to Pitkin Street.
