Living on Earth

Part of Dialogue on Disability (see cover for details), this radio program shares the life of of Philip Schultz (pictured), who won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for poetry for his book about his father, Failure. Schultz’s themes center around his im-migrant Jewish family, and growing up in Rochester. His father, who held the record in New York for the most failed businesses, Schultz claims, is a major inspiration. So are his grandmother with her acerbic pronouncements on life, his Uncle Jake, who dreamed big while running the projector at a local movie theater, and his guardian angel Stein.

*The Poet and His Dyslexia airs Sunday, January 16 at 10 p.m. and Tuesday, January 18 at 9 p.m. on AM 1370/FM-HD91.5-2

In addition to this special described above, 1370 Connection and WXXI’s Center for Public Affairs will focus interviews and reports on the abilities of those with dis-abilities the week of January 16-21.

1370 Connection Forums & AM 1370 SpecialsA Season’s Griot airs Sunday, January 2 at 10 p.m.Hosted by acclaimed storyteller Madafo Lloyd Wilson, this annual one-hour special captures the tales and traditions of African-American and African peoples. This year’s program features a retrospective of the wonderful stories and music from 17 years of A Season’s Griot.State of the State Address airs Wednesday, January 5 at 1 p.m. WXXI will carry the Governor’s State of the State address live from Albany. The Promised Land: Frank and Audrey airs Sunday, January 9 at 10 p.m.On a 10-week tour of 16 national parks in 1995, Frank and Audrey Peterman were awed by the beauty of America and warmed by the friendliness of fellow campers. But among all of the park tourists, the Petermans saw only two fellow African-Americans. Host Majora Carter joins the Petermans and a group of teens from inner-city Houston as they crawl through a wondrous 100-foot cave in Yosemite. And we meet Shelton Johnson, Yosemite’s only black park ranger, who is

quick to point out that less than 1% of the park’s visitors are African-American — a statistic that’s bound to change if the Petermans have their way. *Soundprint: Teaching the Next Generation/Educating Emily airs Tuesday, January 18 at 10 p.m. and Sunday, January 23 at 10 p.m. Teaching the Next Generationexaminesthepremisethat“oncewehaveteachersthathavegrownupwithtechnology, computeruseinschoolwilltakeoff.”Educating EmilyintroduceslistenerstoEmily,atwleve-year-oldgirlwithcerebralpalsy.The Promised Land: Brenda Palms Barber airs Sunday, January 30 at 10 p.m.Brenda wasn’t always drawn to beekeeping. But her quest to find work for residents of Chicago’s economically disadvantaged North Lawndale neighborhood, where some 50% of adults have been in the criminal justice system, led her to start Sweet Beginnings, a transitional jobs program for formerly incarcerated individuals and others with significant barriers to employment.Join host Majora Carter as she accompanies Brenda through the streets of North Lawndale.
