Today we commemorate the undeserved sufferings of JesusChrist, endured for our sake so that we might be reconciled anew

to God our Father. The Gospel readings recount the betrayal andarrest of Jesus; his trial and conviction; and finally his torture,

crucifixion and death. In our Holy Friday service we recall

Christ's carrying His cross, a bitter journey ends when we see

before us the King of Glory crucified. The Church empties, filling

the streets with a funeral procession mourning His crucifixion.The mourners return to the Church and His body is symbolically

moved to the altar.

Basil the Great.

Matin and Divine Liturgy of Holy Easter (St John

Chrysostomou)

On Pascha, the lamentations of Friday night are repeated. The Church is plunged into darkness

to symbolise the despair and defeat experienced before the dawn of Christ's victory over the

enemy of our salvation. Precisely at midnight, a single lit candle emerges from the altar,representing the victory of Christ over death, the defeat of the Prince of Darkness by Jesus, who

is the Light of the world. As the light is passed from person to person, it pushes back the

darkness of the Church and defeats it completely. The Resurrection is proclaimed in song and

triumphant procession. After the Divine Liturgy, the still lit candles symbolising the

Resurrection are carried from the Church into our homes so that they too might be filled with

light and warmth and triumph

Christ is risen from the dead,

Trampling death by death,

and bestowing life to those in the tombs
