Five years ago, The Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation kickstarted our capital campaign with a $5 million gift. We recently welcomed the Foundation trustees (pictured above from left to right) Bob Fujioka, Jack Tsui, Ray Tam, Ken Okamoto, Cathy Ching, along with Executive Director Tertia Freas. with a tour of our new home, The Clarence T.C. Ching Campus. They also sat in during a Na Mele taping featuring local artist Mailani.

PBS Hawaii thanked crew and supporters of Family Ingredients with a special screening event in our new home. Show host Ed Kenney welcomed attend-ees and provided catering from Kaimuki Superette. Guests were also treated to a Q&A with crew mem-ber Todd Fink, and producers Renea Veneri Stewart and Daniel Nakasone.

Thanking Our First NEW HOME Donors

A Mahalo to Family Ingredients Supporters

Leslie WilcoxPBS Hawaii President and CEO

My job is essentially to be a prob-lem-solver. There’s certainly enough to reach for, as the fragmented worlds of media and education require more focus, more engagement, more depth, more context. And in this rapidly changing world, answers are a moving target.

But that’s not the toughest part of my job. As in other things in life, the simplest things can be the most di cult. And quite simply, it is very di cult to adequately express thanks.

Our unpaid Board of Directors and lean sta could spend most of the day writing thank-you letters or making calls – and it simply wouldn’t be enough to express the gratitude we feel here for what citizens are supporting.

After we lost our lease at the University of Ha-waii at Manoa, the people of Hawaii and several mainland-based charitable foundations with ties to Hawaii gave us more than $30 million to establish a modern stand-alone multimedia center on Nimitz Highway at the entrance to Sand Island, PBS Hawaii’s Clarence T.C. Ching Campus. This nonpro t now owns an acre of land and a two-story building, which (thankfully) came in on time and on budget.

And still, after building us a new house, some viewers thank us. Here’s an example, from a wom-an who wrote by hand: “I hope you don’t get tired of my thank-you notes but I gotta say how much it means to me to watch [PBS Hawaii].” Here’s another hand-written note: “PBS Hawaii is contributing to society. I want PBS to continue this way. That’s why I make my donation.”

See what I mean? With a heart full of gratitude, I want you to know that we are dedicated to making the most out of your gift of a new building and your sup-port of programming. We want to raise the bar on our stories and in quality in all areas, including our events for adults and keiki. We want to “be there” for our state – all of it, not just metropolitan Oahu. We want to be trusted for fairness and accuracy. And when we make mistakes, we want to own up and do better. Maybe that’s the best way to convey our thanks.

Also, we’re o ering all the thousands of building donors a guided tour of the television station. Next month, after we complete technical troubleshoot-ing, install a photovoltaic energy system and add donor signage, we’ll have an opening ceremony. But because of space concerns, we can’t invite all who made the building possible. So we invite NEW HOME donors to arrange a personal tour, now or later, by calling Christina Sumida at (808) 462-5045. Quite simply, we’d like to thank you in person.

Raising the Bar – The Best Way to Express Our Gratitude

A Mahalo to Family Ingredients Supporters

Viewers are invited to the beach party of the season! Dive into the sun-drenched songs of the late 1950s, 60s and early 70s with Summer, Surf & Beach Music We Love, a musical celebration featuring the greatest sounds of surf guitar rock and pop tunes.

Hosted by Mike Love of The Beach Boys, Summer, Surf & Beach Music We Love is a nostalgic nod to an era of golden summers and a salute to the classic tunes that routinely surfed the radio waves.

Showcasing legendary artists of the 60s and 70s, this classic “Sur n Safari” will entertain you with classic hits from The Beach Boys such as “Sur n’ USA,” “Good Vibrations,” and “Kokomo,” and other summertime staples like “California Dreamin” by The Mamas and The Papas, and the Grease hit, “Summer Lovin’.”

Summer, Surf & Beach Music We Love marks PBS Hawaii’s rst live pledge from our new building in Kalihi, Honolulu, The Clarence T.C. Ching Campus. Our local breaks will be hosted by PBS Hawaii Pres-ident and CEO Leslie Wilcox. A night of great tunes and reminiscing, this musical celebration has all the perks of a great beach party without bringing home sand on your slippers.

Mrs. Wiggins, Nora Desmond, the Oldest Man – those names alone bring colorful characters and knee-slapping sketches to mind from the family favorite, Carol Burnett Show. Join Carol for her per-

sonally selected favorite moments from her long-running series, and relive memories from a

time when the whole family shared laughs together around one TV.

“After dinner, we would watch the typical Sunday night programs, but we always looked

forward to the Carol Burnett Show,” said Donn Yamamoto, HIKI NŌ teacher at Waiakea High

School. “My cousins and I lined up, lying down on the carpeting in my grandparents’ living room. We really didn’t need cable back then.”

Filmmaker Shirley Thompson remembers mo-ments when she and her family laughed so hard, “we couldn’t breathe.”

“Carol Burnett brought something so special to our home,” Thompson said. “I think I cried when she sang her theme song for the last time. And while I was just reaching the age of breaking o and doing more grown-up, teenaged things, I would still miss gathering around our single TV and communing over laughter and surprise and the heartfelt love you could feel be-tween Carol, the cast and the audience.”

Kenney invites entertainer Tiara Hernandez – sister of pop superstar Bru-no Mars – on an emotional journey to discover her ancestral home of Puerto Rico. “The trip revolved around learning a dish my mom made since I was a child, and I never took the opportunity to learn how to make it from her before she passed away in 2013,” Hernandez said. “It reminded me of being young in a full house, and I realized how quickly we take that for granted…Maybe everyone won’t have the opportunity to travel to their motherland, but I hope after watching this episode they will learn as I have the impor-tance of traditions, love, food and family. It’s all we really have.”

Monica Toguchi Tuesday, August 23 at 7:30 pm

Monica Toguchi’s ability to adapt and evolve is evident in her role as the third-generation owner of Highway Inn. The Oahu restaurants, which specialize in local favorites, have come a long way from the charming Waipahu establishment it started as 70 years ago, growing into a modern business with a location in the booming Kakaako neighborhood. The restaurants have thrived due to Monica’s ability to lead her family business into the future – without compromising the values that de ne it.

Since 1934, the Hawaii Government Employees Association (HGEA) has had a rich history of being dedicated to improving the lives of all people.

“It’s amazing to see how PBS Hawaii has grown and evolved over the years,” writes Jodi Endo Chai, Deputy Executive Director – Adminis-tration for the Hawaii Government Employees As-sociation. (Chai is also a member of PBS Hawaii’s Board of Directors.) “PBS Hawaii has become a vital part of our community, helping us connect with one another – through education about our culture, values, arts and people.”

PBS Hawaii is proud to have HGEA as a longtime supporter of providing educational and enriching pro-gramming to all ages.

HGEA is a sponsor of Insights on PBS Hawaii, a program Chai says HGEA believes in because of “its purpose as a safe, respectful forum for stakeholders to share their perspectives and discuss critical issues facing our state and communities. Hearing di erent viewpoints helps us all broaden our knowledge and understanding about these important issues. There’s nothing else like this on local TV.”

Mahalo a nui loa to Hawaii Government Employees Association for their continued support of PBS Hawaii. If you or someone you know would like to be a program sponsor on Hawaii’s only public television station, please contact PBS Hawaii’s Director of Business Support, Tina Yamaki, at [email protected] or call (808) 462-5048.
