Program Characteristics • We offer two streams, Humanities and Math-

Science; students may register for either or both

streams. • The Gladstone Mini School offers acceleration and

enrichment to students in all three streams. • Upon successful completion , grade 10 credit will be

granted for those courses that were part of the stu-dent’s Mini School Program.

Application Procedure Applications must be received by Thursday, December 21, 2017 and should include the following: • a Student Application Form • a copy of the student’s most recent report card. • a copy of the report from an elementary gifted pull-

in program (if applicable). Portfolios will be due December 21, 2017 • a portfolio containing 5 –10 items of the student’s

work, as evidence of creativity, high standards, and interest in a particular area. (Items might include pieces of writing, illustrations, projects, etc.) The portfolio may be submitted electronically to

ljakoy@vsb.bc.ca The portfolio will be returned to the student’s elementary school after the selection process.

Note: * Your confirmation of registration for the test will tell you the location you should attend for testing ** You may be told you are on a wait list. In this case, you may not accept another program’s offer and still remain on a wait list. Acceptance of another offer during a wait time automatically removes candidates from all wait lists.

The Future is Bright for Gladstone Mini!

Philosophy Statement

The Gladstone Mini School is a two-year accelerated

and enriched cohort-based program that provides a bal-

anced, well-rounded education in an academically chal-

lenging environment. Although the students remain to-

gether for their core courses, they retain complete access

to a comprehensive 4 or 5 year graduation program in-

cluding advanced placement and elective courses. Mini

School students play an important role in the school

community where they have access to facilities, clubs

and teams at Gladstone.

Program Activities As well as doing accelerated academic courses students will take part in field trips, individual and group project work, debates and seminars, group outings, and possible fundraising activities. Guest speakers and workshops in and outside of the school will expose students to diverse points of view. The Gladstone Mini School has a $300.00 Enrichment Fee, in both the 8/9 and 9/10 year. This fee funds various enrichment activities. Post-dated cheques or a payment plan can be arranged. • The Gladstone Mini School is

a limited-enrollment District Accelerated Program.

• The program emphasizes high

academic achievement, crea-tive original thinking, inde-pendence and initiative.

Student Profile Students applying for the Glad-stone Mini School will be selected according to the following criteria: • high academic achievement (a B or higher average is normally required) • creative and original thinking • independence and initiative; self motivation is essential to succeed in the program • responsibility and leadership

Options upon Completion After successfully completing the Mini School program, students have a number of options: • selection of courses leading to secondary school graduation after four years • enriched classes at a senior level, including a broadened

range of elective choices

Frequently Asked Questions I don’t live within Gladstone’s catchment area. Can I still

apply to the Gladstone Mini School? YES! The Gladstone Mini School is a District program, and accepts students from across the city. Can I apply for both the Humanities and Math-Science

options? Yes. Many of our students enroll in both streams. Is the Gladstone Mini School located in a separate build-

ing from the main school? No. We operate on a “school within a school” model, where stu-dents’ classrooms are located in the main building. Does the Mini School concept extend beyond classroom

work? YES! We believe it is important that students develop a sense of citizenship, and become active participants both in the school and the community beyond the school. In order to earn the Gladstone Mini School Completion Certificate, students will demonstrate a willingness to become involved in school and community volunteer work.
