Ruth Pitts Adkins Anderson Ruth was born Ruth Onita Pitts on May 6,1926 in Holly Springs, Mississippi. She was the 10th of 13 children from the union of the late Richard Wesley Pitts and Annie Lee Cook Ruth met her first husband Leon Adkins (deceased) of Yazoo City, Mississippi in Memphis, Tennessee, and after graduating from Booker T. Washington H.S. they moved to Chicago, Il. This union resulted in the birth of 7 children. Vernita Joyce, Marilyn Ann(deceased), Michelle Diane, Karen Leslie, Leon Jr., Craig Ivan and Herbert Lance Adkins. Ruth had accepted Jesus Christ at a very early age being the daughter of a minister. She raised all her children in the Catholic School and Church faith, but later returned to her Baptist heritage. She was most notably know for her warm and loving nature and beautiful curly black hair. Her knowledge, strength of character and conviction made an impression on anyone she met. Ruth was the rock of the family, determined and driven, the epitome of a strong black woman. She was diligent, hard working, industrious and creative. Everyone can remember Raggedy Ruth Dolls which she created and someone here today is wearing one of her hat and scarf sets. Ruth wore many hats in her lifetime, mother of many was first. She was a business owner (Ruth's Bar BQ and Hole 'N One Doughnut shop), CTA bus driver then clerk and real estate investor with her second husband, Percy J. Anderson (deceased). When she retired she was accompanied by her late husband Percy who was constantly at her side. Together they traveled around the US and Canada. Most often traveling between Chicago and Houston engrossing themselves in their favorite pastime of fishing. Ruth enjoyed train, bus and car travel but realized she would have to fly to visit her son in Germany. She enjoyed a 4 week European trip last summer. Ruth had many other hobbies and talents from picture frame making to casino hopping. She was very involved in her families' lives. On November 21, 2012 the Lord whispered to Ruth ”Come home to receive your reward, job well done. Your life on earth is past and eternity awaits you." She was able to tell us how much she loved each one of us during her last few hours. Ruth was also preceded in death by her 6 brothers and 5 sisters. To cherish her memories is one sister Mildred Jenkins (Chicago), 3 daughters Vernita Joyce Johnson (Alan), Michelle Dianne James (Wilson), Karen Leslie Clarke (Labinco), 3 sons Leon Adkins Jr., Craig Ivan Adkins, Herbert Lance Adkins (April) with a special note to her lifelong friend Martha Wilson. In addition Ruth leaves many grandchildren, great children and a host of other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
