What is Progesterone?

• Progesterone is an endogenous steroid hormone involved in menstrual cycle ,pregnancy & embryogenesis of humans and other species.Formed in

• CORPUS LEUTEUM• PLACENTA• TESTES• ADRENAL CORTEX

FUNCTIONSHormone appears after ovulation; causes:

• Development of endometrium• Inc. Glycogen, mucin & fat in lining epithelial cells,

supresses LH• Stimulates mammary glands(alveolar system)• Inc. basal temperature( inc. BMR)• In large doses,causes androgenic effects• Does not retain Na Cl and water

• During pregnancy,it decreases mother’s auto immune response

• Drop in progesterone levels initiates labor• Progesterone supports normal development

of neurons,protective effect on damaged brain tissue(due to inc. estrogen)

• Enhances functions of serotonin receptors in brain
