That is not normal and I know that the rower was not easy to assemble. Please recheck the instructions for some step that you may have misunderstood. If you can't find any mistakes I'd contact the manufacturer.

This machine broke in less time than it took to assemble. The cable stopped retracting back into the main unit. Very disappointed in product.

its not a chain, and fan drive unit like the concept 2 machines. it uses, a bungee, and is extremely over priced. we returned the unit.
